A pool of upcoming talent. We were talking about that last night. We can't figure out how to get new people to keep wanting to come back and get better. It's pretty frustrating.

Before this thread gets hijacked, which I bet will happen before I finsih writing this post . . .

We are lacking a consistent saturday fix.

We are lacking dj's that play "popular" salsa.
Let me explain. In the scene here many of the popular songs are popular because the DJ's play it and not really the other way around. I would like it if our dj's would play just a "tad" bit more of the mainstream popular good salsa(read: more than none).

We may not like it all but the popular music is popular for a reason, there are lots of good songs that I rarely hear in the clubs and would absolutely love.

Case in point: I have only lately(last couple of weeks) started hearing "no le pege a la negra" in the clubs, that song has been around for alot longer than that.

Sexy men! But that's difficult because my SO doesn't dance. I go out in a group with my (male and female) friends just for the pleasure of dancing, nothing more. But sexy movements are an integral part of salsa, merengue etc, so what do you do?

You either do it right, or you don't. I look on it as a kind of play-acting. I know where my heart lies, but... yeah, I'd like my salsa scene to include more men who'll play-act a little. I guess what i'm saying is that I'd like a little more dance-floor ... flirting!

I miss... more people! The only decent salseros I know are... wait. I don't know any decent salseros!  Heeelp! (Teacher not counted in, obviously. He's a demigod.). And let me not get started with salseras.
Hmmm. My salsa scene is not exactly a scene, to be honest with you. I'm sure there IS a real salsa scene in town, but I'm 17 and have too much homework and too little time (and a curfew!) to be able to really get around the clubs and so on. So what I call "salsa scene" consists of a handful of poeple that attend the lessons with me. Lessons are just before the studio's party starts, so that's about it for my social dancing life. It's not exactly what a salsera would want, but I have to make do.
I'm happy to see we've got live and kickin' salseros, Youngsta and Sabor. :P  Give me a cheer when you get to my part of the world.
Oh, and about the sexy dancers? Bring them on!

What are u missing in your Salsa scene?
- we need more young men in my scene who can "go the distance", who don't get tired as often of the older guys populating my scene, guys that can keep up with intense/fast-tempo music (and with me  ).
In short we need more men (esp ET2 dancers) to even out the ratio

- we need more creative dancers with their own dynamic style to excite beginners and newcomers to improve

- we need more integration, between dancers of cuban-style versus LA/NY. personally it's been fun moving in between all the groups/cliques, so I can see how everyone wil benefit more from a united dance community

overall it's a pretty good scene, but could get better at some things

BrookeErin

diversity of style ~ I didn't realize how different on1 and on2 could be until someone tried to lead me on2 at the Chicago Congress. And the things I saw there... It was amazing and inspiring. I am certainly not saying we all look a like, but maybe we're just all used to each other... so maybe I just need some new faces occasionally or the opportunity to travel more

and you can ALWAYS use more sexy men and safe, playful flirting on the floor.

Me. I've been away from what I think as my scene (Scotland) for 6 months now and have been missing it but in 1 week I'll be back and dancing again! Can't wait.

The thing I miss in most scenes, including Scotland is enough advanced dancers and dancers with good soft connection who really dance to the music. So i'll have to start training some more up.. hehe.

There always will be people who want things the traditional way and other such as argonh who are pleased when asked. And as for people not asking you agin if the female:male ratio is skewed this could be why this happens. Also they may not remember. I get ladies who talk to me about enjoying their dances with me before and I cannot imagine why I didn't ask them again as I am really enjoying the current dance... I would rather think positive then negatively about those who don't ask you after you ask them.

What is my salsa scene missing .... ? Well, let me see ....

Friendliness and willingness to welcome new people would be nice.

Have been out in the local salsa scene a couple of times, and it was always unwelcoming and unfriendly. Even though we had a male friend there who was deeply into the scene no-one even approached us. He even tried to drag some people over to meet us, but they disappeared back onto the dance floor (without us) or back to their little group very quickly. When we had had enough of this, we started dancing with each other and got the filthiest looks!

They have already had one venue close on them because of the lack of patronage. Haven't been out since that happened, maybe they have learnt their lesson, I don't know. I'm a bit hesitant to spend money on a venue again and get ignored and looked down on like some bit of trash.

Have you tried asking people instead of waiting for them to ask? I also encourage beginners/newcomers to take the club lessons especially at the venues where the instructor makes you rotate partners every few minutes. It's a great way to meet future partners, have them check you out ;) It works great if you new to club/scene
Also you're aware that most avid dancers like to switch partners often? I know I don't like to be stuck with anyone person for the entire night, however good he is

Yeah, that one was missing in the collection! That is my all time No. 1 "anti favorite"!

During my time in the Netherlands (1996 to 99) I heard nothing but those list of songs every Friday, Saturday and sometimes Sunday. We always went out with the hope to maybe hear something else, but mostly in vain. We tried out all salsa places from Rotterdam to Amsterdam, from The Hague to Nijmegen and Eindhoven, but it was the same music everywhere. Pleading with the DJs was in vain, too. Once you are more than sick of certain songs, you will not even like them much later when they sound like classics to you.

I don’t understand why some DJs play the same music week after week. There is so much good salsa music out there and they make us listen to the same over and over. If you want some good salsa music to listen to while at the computer, go to Tito Morales' (DF member) salsa station at http://www.live365.com/stations/mrsalsoul?play.

as someone who entered the salsa scene in July, I found that it's sometimes helpful to recognize songs. People like dancing to songs they know (I bet it gets more people on the floor) and there is emtional memory of a good experience that will also energize people for a recognizable song. As a beginner, one will feel less lost when they are able to recognize a song, a face, a pattern... I also think this becomes more important for those who are not fluent in Spanish. I'm not saying it should be the exact same playlist every night, but I think it's more wise to replay a few songs then to have an entirely new set each night.

What are u missing in your Salsa scene?
It would be great if we had an after-hours salsa club, for every night of the week. An all-bachata club would be nice too :).

You guys would all love it here, I hear those songs maybe once every two months or so. In fact I would like to hear them more often. Except Gasolina, unfortunately I hear that song about every week.

Vin, the place to be for you is for example the Netherlands. We had to listen to those songs every single night we went out (Fri to Sun) for 3 years when we lived there (and they played only that type of salsa, samo samo samo... nothing for our taste). And most people loved them, it seemed that was the only type of salsa they knew at that time (96-99) and I bet you they still play those songs over and over.

We developed a "serious allergy" against these songs and still, after 8 years, we look at each other (my hubby and I) when one of those songs is played and we say "Remember Holland?" Now these songs are like classics of an otherwise (except salsa) wonderful time we had in Holland.

Yeah, wish I was in Puerto Rico! You have the absolute greatest music there. But we all have different tastes. I know you are in Mayaguez and that is far away from where the action is...

Sorry that I repeat myself. Just noticed that this is an old threat and I had posted the exact same complaint before...

Pardon my speaking for Vin, but I believe when he originally posted this, he was still living in DC.

That being said, he's definitely got some amazingly good music to experience in PR, I'm sure!

A little loving kindness, a little nurturing of individuality... it's a subtle complaint really. For the most part it's a great scene.
