Hi!
I have some (instructional) videos with shines and turns of different salsa styles: on1, NY2, power2, cuban style.
And i wonder if there are any general guidelines on how to adapt turns or shines from the way they are danced in one style to another style.
What are the main points one should be careful about trying to "borrow" turns/shines from a style to another?
Thanks in advance!

Hiya salsa-surfer...some may disagree with me but to my mind there aren't any guidelines. Why do I say this? Because as far as shines are concerned it doesn't really matter if the pattern comes out the same or not.
A basic rule, of course, would be to make sure that you finish the shine in sync with the conclusion of a musical phrase...but given your familiarity with the various salsa counts I don't see this as being an issue in this case. Will every shine work in a straight conversion? No...because the pauses show up in different positions (although on1 and power2 are identical pattern wise, just shifted one beat in execution). But any approximation that works for you and is consistent with the beat structure still counts as a shine. :D

With me when I do shines. The only rule I follow is to finish in sync with my partner. Whether I hit, the 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 beat of song as long as you are in sync it looks, in my eyes, excellent and improv. I rarely finish a shine routine. I play it by ear and what my partner is doing. So if I happen to see her coming forward to hit her 1, we are off on the 2 on a cross-body no matter where I am in my shine. Of course this is social dancing i'm speaking of. Plus when you are doing a shine routine in my opinion you can chose to hit whatever count you would like, that is, as long as you two come out as on and not a drunken couple.

Shines can be done in principal the same way, but then there are the time gaps to fill up, you can always improvise here, with taps or kicks or styling.
