Tuesday is the most productive day of the work week.

In Fantasia, the sorcerer's name is Yensid...which is Disney spelled backward.

From space, the brightest man made place is Las Vegas, Nevada.

A Space Shuttle's main engine weighs about 1/7 as much as a train engine but can deliver as much horsepower as 39 locamotives. (Not that I think those horses would be too happy with that whole Zero G thing  )

On a Canadian two dollar bill, tha flag flying over the Parliament Building is an American flag. (What's up with that?)

Los Angeles's full name is "El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de los Angeles de Porciuncula"...which can be abreviated to just 3.63% of its size as "L.A."

And, to top them all off, an old law in Bellingham, Washington, made it illegal for a woman to take more trhen 3 steps backwards while dancing! (Could someone please explain?)

Actually, we don't have a two dollar bill, we have a two dollar coin with a Polar Bear on it. The flag on the old two dollar bill is the Ontario flag with a Union Jack (British) in the upper left corner. (Parliment is in Ottawa, Ontario) Because the flag is microscopic on the bill it looks like a US flag.

Just making sure the facts are right, the US doesn't own us yet :)

I wanted to move to Canada a couple of years back, but I couldn't seem to meet the requirements to work their, but I try to go once per year. I love the old capital, Quebec City...beautiful place...never been to Ottawa.

Not only does America not own Canada, Canada is the largest country in the World! You are the ones we have to worry about.

Sorry tango! :( ...Well, at least you answered my "what's up with that?" question! :)

You'd think that—as an academic—I'd know better then to pass along information without verifying it myself! And to think that I actually have Canadian money sitting in my dresser (along with some Danish and some Euros)... :?

Canada is a great country, but today we had our first snowfall, and I live in the southern part of the country, so it will be a good 7 months before I see warm weather again! I guess it gives me a reason to stay inside and practice dance.

Quebec is great, especially if you are looking for a vacation with a European feel, but don't want to travel across an ocean.

I'll have to admit, tango, I've never spent a Winter in Canada.
I will say that nearly all the dancers I meet that are from Canada are wonderful people, and Canada produces some great Ballroom dancers:
Pierre Allaire and Mireaux
John Mark Generoux and Franz Mousou
Alain Doucet and Anik

The only part about Quebec was I felt a little uncomfortable not being able to speak French. It seems there are some politics involved. My favorite places are Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton Island (from my limited excursions).

They do have $2 bills. I had some but they are rare. I got them from the bank. I tipped some dude a $2 bill and he gave me a funny look.

We did have two dollar bills but that was like in the 80's. I can't remeber the last time I saw a two dollar bill. Especially one with an American flag on it :P

Miscellaneous Canadian Currency Facts

Canandian bills start at $5.
One dollar coins are called Loonies (picture of the Loone (bird) on the coin)
Two dollar coins are called toonies. Why, because we weren't feeling very creative that day. It has a polar bear.
All our bills are colourful and resemble monopoly money (as most Americans tell me anyway)

Winter? A reason to stay inside???? Are you crazy?

You've never been introduced to the joys of snowboarding, have you?

There's nothing quite like hitting the ground face first at 40 miles an hour :D

But seriously, if you don't like winter, you should take up boarding, you'll love winter then. For most of my christmas break you'll find me on the hill strapped to a board. When I'm not dancing that is :P

Snowboarding in Chistmas is a really strange thought for me  . We are usually on the beach (dancing on the beach is even better!) during Dec

Clearly that is the part of the world where G-d intended for me to be at this time of year... unfortunately no one seemed to remember to communicate that to my latest lottery ticket! :?

Come and conduct one of those salsa workshops  !
Th L.A. style students are willing to do a workshop from someone from the States!

Meanwhile you could give both Sarah & I some of those coffee beans as promised  !

As I've stated before, I'm always happy to demonstrate anything I know but I'm not a dance teacher (and won't be for years to come, if ever).

Now as far as those coffee beans are concerned, Sarah has agreed to pick them up herself – at some undisclosed future date. I could, however, be persuaded to make the delivery assuming S&H expenses could be arranged. Now how much is a flight...

Hmm. About the post for SD. It's a bit late for this year, but there are actually job boards out there that specialise in academic positions, and some that specialise in overseas employment for people who live in the US. If I thought you were serious, I could find them for you.

And about the snow versus summer in December -- it takes some adjustment. I grew up in Pennsylvania, where it's cold and even icy/snowy from November to March or April. And now I live in Florida, where it's quite warm most of the year. You get used to it. Every once in a while, I'll go up north to see some snow. But for the most part, I just try to enjoy whatever weather I have. *shrug*

I grew up in Boston so am also familiar with chillier winters...and they are just one of many reasons I love living in San Diego!

Jenn...do such listings actually include just giving lectures? I hadn't thought so...I thought they were for actual academic postings (which wouldn't really work since I only have 2 weeks free late Dec.). No?

The jobs boards are basically for longer-term teaching positions. The invited lecture circuit is basically a clique of friends who invite each other all over the world to speak -- you have to have the network. My former S.O. has a PhD in analytical chemistry and is a recognized authority in a couple fields, and he has literally been all over the U.S. and a few other countries giving lectures -- mostly invited by colleagues, former students, etc. It's all in whom you know. *shrug* :?
