Maybe I am losing my sense of humour, but I have decided... I don't like these type of shows. As some of you know, we have Strictly Dance Fever which, in a simple way of describing it, is a dance version of American Idol. Auditions were held around the UK for potential dancers to be housed and trained over 8 weeks (?) by professional choreographers for £50,000 and a contract with a West End (equivalent to Broadway) production.

On one hand, the idea is good, giving people an opportunity to accomplish something they may otherwise have only been able to dream of.

Okay, why don't I like it? I have been watching a programme made from the various auditions and what has turned me against this type of show is the behaviour/facial expression of one of the judges who I know socially, in the dance scene. I always thought of this guy as a nice guy but watching him trying to be a version of Simon Cowell (the wide eyes, the snickering, the laughter, the comments), I don't like :( . Maybe this show is bringing out the real aspect of this guy's personality? I don't know.

In addition, I would have thought that the show makers were looking for a certain type, because the winner would also have a starring dance role in a West End production. Looking at the auditions, it appears that they were auditioning everyone under the sun... some who could clearly not dance nor did they have any rhythm and some who were in their 70s or so (and looked very fraile)... what sort of West End production would they have been able to take part and dance in?

But, more than anything, I don't like how this male judge I am acquainted with is coming across. :( (Maybe I just need to keep teling myself "it is only a TV show, it is only a TV show" )

It's only a TV show... It's only a TV show... It's only a TV show...

And what you may not know is that the producers of the show are setting the tone for it. They may have put constraints on the judges and/or allowed talentless wonders to get through the audition process (which DOES happen on Idol) to garner ratings.

The guy you know socially is just doing his job. Don't think badly of him. :)

 Thanks DancingMommy! Yes, it did also occur to me that the producers of the show may have been "coaching" him via the earpiece presenters/interviewees usually wear in their ear - make big eyes now - raise eyebrow here - grimace in 2 seconds...

I never watch those shows. They're like a train wreck, to me. What I'm seeing makes me cringe, but horrified fascination keeps me watching. :headwall: When it's time to turn on the telly, I just say no.

I never watch the audition process. If I do tune in to these shows it's after the top 12 or whatever have been selected. I hate watching people make obvious fools of themselves.

I wish they'd bring that dancing version here to Oz! I'd try out, for sure! :D
