Ok, I'm not going to go as far as to ask if anyone here has ever been an exotic dancer and I'm fairly certain the answer is no, but I do wonder if there are any ballroom and swing dancers that have crossed over from this area. So far I've never met anyone who has. :?:

Sorry, spitfire.
The closest I've ever gotten to exotic dancing was that really bad movie with Demi Moore and Burt Reynolds. What the heck was it called? Hmm.

Are you talking about Striptease?
I don't remember Burt Reynolds being in that one.

Yeah. I'm pretty sure he played one of her customers. He wore glasses, though, and a very bad white-haired toupee. He didn't look like the Burt Reynolds of old. :D

I did get paid $200 to do a Dirty Dancing routine at a party for sex therapist that was featured on the radio. It was a WILD party. I'm much too old for that sort of thing now!

One of the ladies I worked with a long time ago offered me and some of the other guys money to be male dancers at some bachelorette party she was attending; it was cheaper then actually hiring a male dancer. None of us excepted.
One of the guys responded by saying "my body's worth more then seventy-five dollars."

Yup. He was, in want of better terminology, the male lead. Yuck! *shudder* Hence my decision never to do exotic dancing. Too many sleazeball congressmen out there.

No pictures...my wife would kill me!
I hated my partner at the time. THough we danced "dirtily", we never got along with each other.
One of the themes of the party:
They handed out fluorescent dots. Wherever you placed the dot meant it was ok for people to kiss you there.
There was also a naked person painted solid gold with a buffet of fruit on top of them.

Now, I have tried the gammet of dances...which if you read my other posts you alreay know...but exotic dancing is not one of them and I don't have a desire to start.
Many people often confuse belly dancing with exotic dancing, but they are really NOTHING alike. In fact, belly dancing used to be done as a fertility ritual (it's designed primarly for the woman body) and men were not even allowed to watch the dancing...women only. Just a quick bit of trivia.

Pygmalion, how did it turn out? :D I'm thinking about belly dancing mainly to enhance my isolations and hip action in salsa. Dancersdreamland, can you recommend any video for newbie belly dancers? I've purchased a couple and to tell you the truth, I don't really like them. Probably purchased the wrong ones.

Hmm...videos...
I personally like the Dolphina Goddess workout videos...Warrior Goddess is my favorite, but I'm not sure it's a good beginner tape. Here's a link to Dolphina's site for more info: http://www.goddesslife.com/index.html
The Neena and Veena tapes are pretty good. I have the Basic Dance video which is alright, but it doesn't really break down the moves for beginners very well. Here is a link for more info: https://secure9.nexternal.com/shared/StoreFront/default.asp?CS=nj&BusType=BtoC&Count1=740657985&Count2=657798409&Target=products%2Easp&CategoryID=76
Your best bet would be to see if you can take a beginners class somewhere to learn the basic movements and then supplement with the VHS tapes.
Please keep us posted on how it turns out. All the best!

I'm serious. Are there actual places where you can take exotic dancing lessons? And how would you go about getting a job in it, would you have to audition or something?
I seriously think it'd be a great job for me. It'd be fun, I'd get to dance, and make money at the same time. (and having girls almost throwing themselves at me can't hurt)

I'm sure there are places you can take lessons, but I'm not really sure where. Your best bet would be to talk to exotic dancers in your area. Find out where they learned and how they broke into the business.

Or you could google exotic dance lessons, like I just did. The first hit is a site that sells instructional videos for women and men. I won't give the link, because it shows scantily clad women. Just google, my friends, google.

There are several companies here in Australia that specialise in teaching women to spice up their sex lives by learning a wee bit of exotic dancing.
I saw a feature on the group a few weeks ago on telly. And, of course, there are a bunch of online places that specialise in DIY exotic dancing videos (http://www.exoticdancelessons.com) and "sensual dancing" courses. (http://www.centralhome.com/ballroomcountry/exotic_dance.htm)
Hell, they even sell poles! :)
DanceMentor, do you think we should ask them to link to us? He he he!

Veen and Neena will be doing some lessons at the Reno Dance Sensation for those Dance Forum Members who are coming to the "Family Reunion".
As to getting into exotic dancing... its a lot harder if you are a guy. Women can show yup at the amatuer nights most clubs have... when the contest you'll probably get offered a job. Some places will make you rent the stage, you pay for your time up, and you keep the tips.
For guys your best bet is to call the exotic clubs in your area and ask if they have a woman's night with male dancers... if you want to dance for women... this is key. Some clubs will have male dancers but for other men... if that isn't your bent then you may want to be sure you get the right information. :D
As to lessons, a number of aerobics studios and the like have been offering exercise classes with this in mind... but some are women only, so again call ahead to check.
Auditioning to get into a male revue or as a dancer on a woman's night usually does not involve any actual dance skill... they are more interested in having the right "look", a tone tan body, little to no body hair (or the willingness to get rid of it), and little flab without TOO much muscle. If you can keep on beat you'll probably get a chance to try out the stage.
If you can dance you'll makle nearly twice as much money as the guys who are just buff or pretty.
If you can't find exotic dancing classes hip hop and belly dance classes are ideal. The better you are at isolations and fluid movement the more likely you are to stand out.

One of the teachers at a local studio was said, by the head DJ there, to have been a DJ at an exotic dance studio in the past. And this guy acts as sleazy as that would imply.
Couple of years ago, some of the denizens of alt.sex.strip-clubs on Usenet decided to invade rec.arts.dance. Some regulars got really offended by this but actually the ASSC-ers were on-topic according to the group charter and I thought they livened the (otherwise worthless, these days) group up quite a bit for the duration of their stay.

Hey ND! Waxing is good, lasts longer than shaving, and quicker than tweezing
There is a salsa dancer/teacher here in London who I have heard, has done exotic dancing classes. I don't know how long she did the classes for or whether she ever took it outside of the studio. There is certainly an extra "something" about her when she is on the dancefloor though. She does have long hair, which she uses to great effect.

I followed the link, out of curiosity, and this is what some of the blurb said:
Exotic dancing is much more than "dancing sexy". Laurie Conrad, will help you master the execution of a variety of dance movements - walking sexy, four types of hip rolls, floorwork, and the striptease.
There is more than one type of hip roll?!?  As a "natural born female", I might learn something yet!

One of my neighbors is a male stripper at night in some club. He has the right look, build but doesn't know any formal dancing. I went out to the bar with him a couple of times a few years ago and he used to be a better dancer than me then. :D
Most of the male strippers are into just to pick up women. I've heard alot of stories and although he has a gorgeous girlfriend who lives with him, he can't resist the offers from other women. He tells his girlfriend he does it for the money, but its mostly to get women. In his words.

I was reading this thread and laughing--and it reminded me of something I had forgotten.
About a year ago, I was in a costume shop because I was buying a gorilla suit for a quickstep routine I was doing. Yes, you heard correctly.
Anyway, this guy asks me what the gorilla suit is for and I tell him I'm going to dance in it. And he tells me he hires male exotic dancers to wear costumes and go to parties and would I be interested. Luckily, I'm not quite willing to inflict myself on unsuspecting women like that!
Cheers,
Genesius

Yuck! He'll live to regret that.
But, IMHO, there are a lot of exotic dancers out there who are just decent people trying to make a living. Too bad our society doesn't value them as it should.
Of course, as you say, there are people who are into it for the wrong reasons. But it's one of the few jobs where you can make a decent pay check without tons of degrees. I think there are lots of good people trying to make a living in exotic dance, for various personal reasons.

I don't doubt that there are some decent women exotic dancers out there who are just trying to make some fantastic money. But, from what my neighbor has told me that he might make $100-150 in a good night. I don't think the male dancers make nearly the same as a woman dancer. I met about 5 of his coworkers (male exotic dancers) and they were on the seedy side to say the least. Pretty much broke and squeaking by on their looks usually at some woman's expense. My neighbor had a day job which supported him. Don't get me wrong, I thought they were cool people but the glamor was mostly left on the stage. I'm just saying in my opinion, the guy's motivation to be a exotic dancer is for easy sex. According to my neighbor, the girls come to him. He doesn't have to do any chasing anymore. The guy's all sat around bragging about all the conquests which were in the hundreds. I used to think, if these girls only knew.
He laughs at me for doing Ballroom! But, to each his own. [/quote]

Yup. To each his own. I suspect exotic dancing is just like any other walk of life. There are good people, and there are sleazeballs. *shrug* My only encounter with it was a girls-night-out road trip to the Chippendales show once, years ago. To be honest, the whole thing grossed me out. Some people there, including some of my friends, had a good old time. I just felt bad for the guys who were "performing" in front of a few hundred screaming women. I would have hated to be in their place. But, as you say, to each his own.
