Do any of you remember the Sweet Valley Twins books...not Sweet Valley High or Sweet Valley University, but the actual starter series? I ran across a copy of couple of months ago at a local consignment shop and now I'm completely addicted to tracking down the whole set. It's kind of crazy since there are at least 107 books in the series.

I don't know the books, but a good place to find them will be amazon.com or ABE.com. ABE is a huge internet booksellers portal.

edit: removed the live link. Sorry

With Amazon and the internet, it almost gets too easy to collect something.

I don't remember the Sweet Valley Twins books. But really going back in time, I remember reading the Bobbsey Twins series and their various adventures. Now that would have had to be in the 50s! I think they have been reissued or more written later than that.

Indeed, it is much easier to collect somethings, so the collections get much more serious. In books, some will not find it collectible if it is not a first/first (first printing/first issue)

The Bobbsey twins have been reprinted many times.

And it is a lot more fun to go into a used book store than sit at the computer and check what can be just bought and sent to you.

AGREED! My only problem is if I get in a bookstore, I may never get out! I love books, I love the feel of books, the texture of old paper, the, oh never mind.

I remember them! And the BabySitter's Club (I hate kids but loved that series), Saddle Club, Black Stallion, etc.! Such great old friends!

One snotty rich girl used to get the books as they'd come out, so we'd all sign up on a waiting list and be extra nice to the brat so we'd get a chance to read it in exchange for a twinkie or something, LOL.

I wish our used book stores were something more than a generic romance-novel emporium. That's ALL we have by way of used books here! Harry Potter's kicked out of our schools, but you walk into "Justine's Used Books" and all you see is the same she-porn. I gave up going the first week they opened. UGH! For an area so sexually repressed, these religious women sure do have some lewd literary appetites!

Maybe the bookstore is full of them because nobody wants them. Maybe they aren't REPRESSED at all, just prefer to keep it private.

Maybe.

The used book store in my new town leaves much to be desired...very scary looking and I won't even go inside...

Whenever I visit friends in our old town I ALWAYS stop at the bookstore. It's mostly romance, but they also carry contemporary Christian artists, cook books, sci-fi, and an entire section devoted to kids and teens.

The books I've been purchasing lately have been from Goodwill, Salvation Army, and garage sale. I can never resist the temptation to stop and see if there is another book to add to the collection. I agree...searching for treasures in a second-hand way is a bit more engaging than online searches. I'll reserve the searches for those last-resort finds.

Also, I remember BabySitter's Club (loved the movie) and the Saddle Club, but I don't believe I ever ready any. Hmm...perhaps I'll have to check into them as well.

Hey. Have you read a copy of Redbook lately? The funniest thing. The home-delivered copies say LOVE, the newsstand copies say SEX. Seriously. I've checked, because i"ve had a subscription for a while. Lots of good tips in there. And all the articles are about sex for married women.

What I heard on some news magazine show or the other, is that married women across the US don't want their kids seeing that they're reading about sex. But ... they want to keep themselves and their husbands happy, so they have a normal, healthy interest in sex. Hmm.

Repressed or not repressed. That's the question.

Who knows?

Once I have a job and stop moving every year, I'll explore all the used books stores on Manhattan and go to town. :D I love love love books and I have a very good excuse for buying the prettiest and the randomest (I need my inspiration, don't I??). I've been keeping self in check on all the book buying though, for the abovementioned reasons.
Madison, WI had such wonderful used book stores. I had at least three favorites, one of which closed and moved somewhere last spring, alas. I got a really funny autobiography of Salvatore Ferragamo there, a reprint of a 19th century ladies handicrafts book and a book on modern jewelry. Fun stuff!

wow that brought back a lot of memories i had forgotten about. I used to have all of the sweet valley twin and highschool books. I remember advidly reading a bunch of other ones mentioned in other posts too like saddle club and black stallion. In elementary school i was hooked on the Samantha books. Come to think of it i haven't seen any of those books since i as in middle and elementary school.

My mother's a die-hard fan of that one.. "Woman's Day" or "Woman's Somethingorother." I've noticed the pattern on this and ALL women's magazines. The cover has one smiling blonde, and four things: How to cook for your family, how to please your man in bed, clothes, makeup, or hairstyles to make homely broads look better, and how to lose weight. :P

She is one of many women who don't believe anything unless they see it on Court TV, the Bible, a women's magazine, or- were she more contemporary- email forwards.

It's too bad women don't have other things on their mind

trip down memory lane for me too! i read every sweet valley twins... amazing i still remember the characters (outgoing jessica and quiet elizabeth, right?) and that same silly intro they gave each time describing the twins and their perfect blonde hair and size 6 figures. LOL!

ditto for sweet valley high, babysitter's club... i used to read these and re-read them!

junk-novels for kids i guess but what can i say? i think it's great to get kids reading no matter what it is. (ok almost).

Amen to this. I'm a diehard Captain Underpants fan, myself.

Seriously, though, most of the books I read were inherited from my older brother and sisters and were already lying around the house when I was born. So I ended up reading the Boxcar children -- the originals, not the newer series -- Betsy, Tacey (sp) and Tib, Betsy and Eddie, Beezus and Ramona, all the Eleanor Estes books, the Little House Series, the Chronicles of Narnia, the Hardy Boys. Mostly stuff from the fifties, I think.

Some of us do. 8) That doesn't mean that make-up, weight loss, better sex and cooking tips are unwelcome.

and back on the topic :car: :P

One place where I've found a bunch of kids' series books for sale was at the local library. Here and where I used to live, the libraries sell books that are donated or that are being taken out of circulation. I got a bunch of Babysitters Club books that way... for maybe ten cents apiece, IIRC. 8)

The best and very best of online book dealers is the following...

www.addall.com

It searches 23+ online bookstores for new and used at the lowest rates and puts them into a nice table showing from cheapest to most expensive. You can even find out-of-print and rare books.

Sort of my little secret...

Our city library has one of these sales 4 times a year. And it is not too far from work, but I have realized that I CANNOT make it there on my lunch hour and get back to work on time. Late each time I tried that. So now I have to go on Saturdays when I figure stuff has already been picked through.

Memory lane... (a most embarissing moment revealed to my Forum Family)

I remember having a pretend friend (named Cathy) whom I would do everything with. She would come to dinner (bless my mom for setting out the extra plate with pretend food) and help with the household chores (although I remember always having to reclean her area)...anyway... Then I started reading the Sweet Valley Twin books and wanted so badly to have a twin sister. Since my mom couldn't have any more children, I decided we could adopt the pretend Jessica and Elizabeth to make my only childhood and human child with three pretend friends.

I think that's why it means so much to me to recollect the books. I found four more books today...including the first book of the series!

I have a twin sister, so I reeeallly wanted an imaginary friend or two, to get me away from the dreaded twin-thing.

But yeah, nostalgia is a very important thing. Good luck with the books. And tell Cathy, Jessica and Elizabeth hi for me. :friend:

I'll tell the girls hi next time I bump into them...it's been a while!
