Whose into the art of Tap Dancing?

Gabe and Angel, my kids take several genres of dance however they both solo in tap and really excel in this form of dance. Broadway style and New York style both are a lot of fun for them. :D

Welcome to DF dancemom! :D I haven't taken any classes in tap myself, but maybe I will do so in the future when I find time for it.
Be sure to check out http://www.danceforums.net. It is a sister forum that is dedicated to non-partner dancing (Ballet, Jazz, Tap and more). The site is down for the moment but will probably be running again soon. It is in it's infancy but maybe you have something to share with us there?

I absolutely LOVE tap...it's one of my favorite dance forms. I've taken about three to four years of choreographed steps and would not like to branch into "hoofing." I want to be able to feel the rhythm through my toes...

what is New York Style?

Well I'll do my best to explain...

Well New York style tap is the style that you see the tap masters such as Chance Tayler and Roxanne Butterfly (also Gregory Hines (R.I.P.) from L.A. and New York teach. Basically it's all feet, no arms, lots of it requires you to bend over from the waist...different music is used.

Broadway style requires a totally different posture, more straight up and down, can have lots of turns and lots of very precise arms.

I would equate rhythm tap with what I call New York style and Show Tap with Broadway style.

That's what most of my tap friends call rhtyhm tap. I'm sure New York probably has its own distintive branch of it, but the overall style I've always heard it refered to as Rhythm.

i've always thought rhythm tap was slow tap, and more in sync with the music and then there's fast tap, broadway style (42nd street) and then dein perry style tap

Then I'm sure that Rhythm Tap is the correct name for it. I'm sure that your friends who actually tap would know the correct name. I've just heard it as both is all. :D

I danced tap for 17 years before having to give it up. I'm looking to start on it again as soon as my schedule clears up a bit. I competed for 12 years and always had a blast. I loved performing and competing...but mostly just hearing the clear sounds of the taps and the way they compliment the music. :)
