View Full Version : Dancing With the Stars--Get Me Rewrite!
I am so grateful to all of them because without their star status, this show would not be a hit.
These are C celebrities at best. I would not be surprised to see them doing something like the Surreal Life or The Real Gilligan's Island (which one of them already did!).
If the show does well, maybe next time they'll get "better" celebrities.

Yes...perhaps people with more dance/dance movie background...for example I'd like to see Jennifer Lopez, Patrick Swayze, John Travolta, Jamie Lee Curtis and Robert DeNiro...wouldn't that be a hoot? ;)

Damn, now that would be an absolute blast! :D I like your thinking, TT!

I want to see at least a couple more athletes, too, like have Venus and Serena Williams. That would shake up the dance floor, since it's already interesting seeing the sisters play on the court against each other.
Oooooh, and how about Michael Jordan, since he's tried so many other sports ;)

I'd personally like to see Michelle Kwan and Sasha Cohen (figure skating), Hollie Vise and Vanessa Atler (gymnasts), and Jessica Howard (rhythmic gymnastics).
Seriously, after doing something like Dirty Dancing Havana Nights, Swayze should especially be approachable. ;)

NO SANDBAGGING :!:
I vote for Tiger Woods to be on the show - and we know if he's on, the Ballroom community WILL grow :) He's handsome & tall, how about having Ieva Pauksena take him on?
And we can sell Tiger that by doing ballroom, it'll improve his 'swing'! :)
OK, I'm daydreaming...Back to real life...

Welcome to the DF Mary, and thanks for adding an important perspective. Given larger sociocultural differences I doubt the show will ever reach the same status in the U.S. that it has in England and Australia but, like you, I am much, much happier with something rather than nothing! I too appreciate that ABC has taken this step.
TT, while I find all the suggested names you mention interesting, I don't think that they'd be ideal in *this* vehicle, especially not the ones who already have some partner-based dance training (e.g. Patrick Swayze).

I was thinking more along the lines of that basis being a plus...especially for the pro's doing the training. I think you would get more interesting yet technical routines. Swayze probably has the most training of any celebrity followed by Lopez and Travolta. If you want someone with lesser training to sort of even the field...Jamie Lee Curtis, Robert DeNiro, Richard Gere, Vanessa Williams, Catherine Zeta Jones, Renee Zellweger, Marisa Tomei, Donnie Walberg, Sean Astin and Reese Witherspoon would be my other picks...

People like that would be great. If you want to get people like that on the show, get every single person you know in the US to watch this series of it and to contact ABC to let them know they want more. Also go out and buy things based on the advertising you see during the broadcast and -- more importantly -- contact the advertisers and tell them that you are buying their products because you saw them advertised on "Dancing with the Stars" and you appreciate their support of ballroom dancing on TV.
It's all about TV ratings and success in ad sales. The more money the show can bring in, the more money they'll have for the production budget, and the more money they'll be able to pay to attract higher-ranking stars.

The only problem with using John Travolta, JLo, Patrick Swayze, Michelle Kwan and the like is that they are already trained dancers/ice dancers. The premise of the show was to train non-dancers/rhythmic movement types to dance ballroom.
That's why I think Evander Holyfield was so incredible to watch. I don't care that he didn't ace latin motion and that his feet weren't precise, it's all about the journey people!
I agree that the Williams sisters would be cool to watch.
To that list I would add some unlikely types such as Steve Buchemi, Teri Hatcher, Patrick Dempsey (hottie!), Tony Hawk (hottie!), Jude Law (double hottie!) and maybe some more jocks like Jason Veritek or David Ortiz from the Red Sox.
I think I just want to see Jude Law in latin pants. Hey, this is MY dream list.

I'd have to disagree with that. I think it might be kind of clever to do just that, putting those same people up against one another. And show clips of them in their respective movies right before their pro/am dance. It's the "A" list celebrities that people really want to see, and it's folks that should be able to put on a good performance. Ratings would go through the roof, as people remember their favorite dance movies, or scenes. And, hopefully, a lot more interest in ballroom dancing would be generated.

I understand where you're coming from Purr, but it seems to me that having non-dancing celebrities is the better way to draw new audiences (vs. those who already have favorite dance movies/scenes) to dance. The higher visibility and the wider the range of stars involved the better as far as publicizing and promoting dance to new audiences.

Also, I think people watching non-dancing celeb's has them on the edge of their seats, waiting for them to fall down.
We already accept the Actor/Dancers that are already out there as talented performers, so when there's an athlete or non-dancing singer/actor on the chopping block, there's some excitement.
Also, I think this allows the audience to sympathize with the stars, since they all are beginners (non-dance audience and non-dance celebs)... this could encourage people off the couch and into the dance studio.

Exactly Porfirio. From a dancing persepective this may be less ideal, but from a publicity and recruitment perspective this seems like the better way to go.

LoL, so who does everyone think will be the first to fall? Kinda sad, but that's probably what will get people talking about the show. The producers should pay someone to trip.

It's a sad commentary if people are watching the show to see if someone falls flat on their face (or butt). Or better still, waiting to see another wardrobe malfunction.

if i can never find an amateur rhythm partner, perhaps i will consider the robot. perhaps they make one that won't talk back.

Well, you could always ask for the AmPartner2K6 with optional voice module removed. You would of course have to add the separate dance modules in, though. Just think of it, a firmware update and VOILA! you have an expert partner....

Okay... How about this. Right before the week 2 show airs I will lock the current running threads. Then we can start a new thread on "Week 2" which all the Left Coasters can avoid until after they have seen the show.
Is that reasonable?

I probably won't be anywhere I can get on the internet right after, so don't worry about me.
The cool thing is that I can go to the taping, and then hopefully get dinner and get back to the hotel in time to watch it again on TV.

When listing our "dream team" of celebrity guests, it's important to think about the time commitment. If it's 5 weeks of practice plus potentially 6 weeks of shows, then that's almost three months out of somebody's schedule. For active pro athletes in most sports, it's rare to have three months of nothing, even out of season (since there are various off-season training commitments). Moreover, the "A" list of actors would likely be moving straight from one film project to another. That's probably why we have "B" (or "C") list actors, and a retired (or semi-retired?) boxer.
