Here's an observation I've made. I have XM, one of the US satellite radio providers, and I love to dance around the house to international music. When I'm listening to reggae or most west African music, I do salsa dancing. Anybody else? Is salsa one of those universal dances that you can do all over the world? :D

Me too. One of the reasons could be that they share some of the same musical intruments. Particularly the use of percussion. One of my favorite groups who meshes Salsa with deep african rhythm is Africando. Perfect example of this is their song "Ken Moussouel Guis Li" Love that song! :bouncy:

Shoot, I practice my salsa to hip-hop too. It doesn't matter at all to me as long as it's a 4/4 beat :D

I'm beginning to suspect that, to a true salsero, there is only salsa music, youngsta!

:D :D Wepa... You guys should see the eyes of people when they are jumping around and I'm bustying out salsa to reggea song... If you can play with the music, there isn't a thing you can't salsa to. :D :D Well, maybe if you are crazy too, there isn't at thing you can't salsa to.

LOL! Yup. I dance salsa to reggae, too, and to something called highlife -- West African music that's up-tempo, party music. Sounds a lot like reggae. And the stuff that's too fast for salsa? You got it. Merengue! Fun.

For what it's worth I did salsa to some live Greek music this past weekend... granted the "flavor" seemed a bit off but, beat value wise at least, it certainly worked.

Nothing like a big, fat Greek wedding to make you want to do salsa. :? 8)

Well, it wasn't entirely a Greek wedding...half the parties involved were Copts, not Greek Orthodox. As far as the salsa side went, I also ended up checking out the salsa at the Gold Coast on Friday and Saturday nights. Friday was the better night by far, but both were good. Normally I would have prefered a bit less merengue -- but since the bridesmaid I was escorting came with me, and since she didn't know any salsa, this actually worked out for the best. I'm not sure who was more shocked by the number of people I knew there on Friday night though, her or me... Mind you, I'd never been there before... but bumped into people from SD, from Vegas, and even from NJ who I knew from various salsa and ballroom involvements. :D

Cool. 8) :D at least you got some fun out of it. I've often thought that you must have one heck of a network. That's one great thing about dancing. You meet the nicest people everywhere. :D

I seem to be adding my two cents into old threads....! (sorry...)

This is a fun one. A few years ago my ex & I went to this very Greek tavern for my friend's birthday. There was a Greek band & we felt like dancing. Since we didn't know the dance he just lead me into a Cumbia  & we had the best time! Part of the fun was having ppl guessing what the heck we were doing  !

Recently I went with my usual latino 'family' to this little African club. We ended up free-styling salsa all night to reggae etc. Cool fun...! :P

Old threads are like old friends. No problem revisting them from time to time. I love dancing salsa to African music, reggae actually!! Then for rhumba I favor Turkish music. :)

salsachinita, I LOVE the fact that you're bringing up the older
threads...I think it's great!!

As for this topic, I was out at a hip-hop club the other night
and...you guessed it...there was quite a bit of salsa in my
movement...and it was so natural...

Mine, too :D ! That's why I love R&B/Hip Hop/Salsa nights...! Mixed crowd, mixed styles....! Not to mention it's very 'ham-friendly'......!

Well remember -- part of salsa's roots are the Afro-Cuban rhythms and styles ... So not surprising we can apply salsa to reggae or other styles of music!

There is some Hindi stuff out there (not sure if that is the proper term -- think sort of clubby Bollywood-techno stuff) that you can merengue to if it's not too slow. Funnnnn! Yes, I am living room dancer too!

Oh, yeah! I hadn't even thought about that--I guess you could merengue to it at that.... 8)

Cha cha, salsa too, for the hindi music. The dancers have copied a lot of ballroom and latin moves and incorporated that into their dancing. It's obvious if you know ballroom and latin.
