View Full Version : Being happy....

You know what's weird about competitive ballroom dancing and message boards? That you pretty much can't talk about how happy you are or how well things are going because it comes across as bragging. All we can talk about is technical stuff (shoes, outside spins, competition rules) or when things go wrong (partner skipped town, suspect competition results, etc.) or how difficult things are (finding a partner, managing a dance relationship, etc.).

Look, I'll level with you...I'm pretty freakin' deleriously happy with my partner and our dancing these days, and I've been itching to sing out my joy like the birds at sunrise. And our coach is the most generous and supportive person I've ever had mentor me in any endeavor. Life is beautiful. Anyone else?

I'm not the one to talk about happiness right now. Exams are sucking the dance joy out of me. Plus other teen issues of insecurity are doing their best to take the fun out of my dancing. I'll repost on this after exams. Probably will have gotten better.

Exams suck the joy out of everything. Still, you've got to go through it and you know we're all wishing you the best of luck -- and a happy return to dancing afterwards!

No, Laura. When it's you (an obviously genuine person) it comes across just fine. Glad to hear everything's going well. Deleriously happy is a good, good thing. :D :D

Laura, I know what you mean. Congratulations on being happy, I think it's great. :D

I generally try not to complain because I get caught up in it and it makes me irritated with myself. I'm happy with everything right now except my dancing, mostly due to lack of a partner. Work, school, SO, new diet/workout program are all going great. The dance stuff will come along in time.

Life is WONDERFUL......
although once in a while, I do get depressed
from time to time, there are things that bother me badly
but in general, I have a great life, and I know that! :D

even with the complains I have sometimes, I know, I am still lucky
to go to a pretty good/expensive college, to dance, and to have great summer internships! Moreover, to find this place, and to get to know all of you! :D

I am mostly settled in NY now, starting my ballroom lesson tomorrow.
I will keep you all updated. Westchester is pretty and peaceful! When I look out from my window at work, I see tons of trees, and the lake. It's like being in the mountain all day! I work right across from IBM, and I absolutely love this place! :D

Speaking of my partner, he is visiting at the end of June, and then we are competing at Manhattan together!

Glad to hear that everyone's having a happy life!

Exams are tough (just finished mine), but once you are done with them, you will feel all good and relaxed! :D Best Wishes!

Laura, thank you for a wonderful topic. I've been needing some place to just bounce around and be happy for a while now. :)

Getting back into dance in February was the best move I've ever made. I'm on the floor 4-6 times a week and loving every minute of it. My instructor and I get along so well that about 90% of my lesson is filled with laughter (while dancing, mind you). In addition, and I think that this is the most amazing achievement, as well as the one that's the source of mos tof my happiness, is the fact that it's been a little over a month now since I've felt any sort of back pain! It's amazing! After I broke my back, the doctors told me that I'd be on pills and in pain for the rest of my life. I was never one of taking pills, so I stopped taking the pain killers when I ran out of anti-inflammatories a year and a half ago, but the fact that I now have NO PAIN is beyond description! I'm just elated! I still haven't found a partner, though I have been trying, but at this point, things are going so well that it doesn't matter. I'll find one when I'm meant to...but that's not going to stop me from looking. :D

That is great! I'm so happy for you. Another example why everyone should ballroom dance.

What are the chances that all of the competitive dancers on DF are in their best mood right now? But it's true! We just had a great week of practice with absolutely no argument and made pretty decent progress! And today is our anniversary :o

Life is beautiful.

Hehehe, it's amazing. In the three months since I've been back at the studio, I've lost 30 of the 60lbs. I gained during the time I was out of commission (read: bedridden) and I'm moving better than I could have ever hoped. It helps that I've gained this doing something that I love. :)

Happy anniversary and congratulations! How long have you been married? :)

I think dancers need to talk about being happy more often. Just reading this thread has brightened my day tremendously! :D

I know it was a month ago that this was posted, but it fits perfectly for me today. Early in the week, but the best week of practices in months, no fighting over it , great progress, and today is our 31st wedding anniversary! :D :D Life is good. There are some obstacles to peace and happiness, but we largely make the choice to be at least at peace, if not happy.

And I agree about making choices, kansas49er. Almost regardless of ones circumstances, it's possible to choose to be happy. You're a very wise man, IMO. 8) 8)

I wonder about this topic sometimes (okay, often, I confess.) Why do some people feel is it not okay to be happy and express your happiness? Life is cyclical. We've all been miserable, at least once or twice, I'm betting. So, when life is truly beautiful, we all deserve to enjoy.

Yay for everyone here. :D :D

I think most people chose to be unhappy as it garners them long lasting attention. Being happy gets a few seconds of attention before people move on. I'm not saying everyone is like that, but....

As far as dance is concerned, I think many of us are hesitant to announce our dancing happiness as 1) we're so often afraid that others are judging us that we worry if our great dances looked like crap to others 2) if other people arn't having these great dances they might quit and 3) no one wants to be like that obnoxious dancer who always talks about how great he/she is when if fact he/she isn't .

That said, I've been having great dances lately. The past month has made such an impact on my dancing, even an old instructor (who is prone to jealousy) commented on my being better and how much my new instructor has helped. I even got an email from an instructor saying how much they enjoyed teaching me. Last night the possibility opened for my partner and I to maybe compete in rising star divisions for WCS come 2006. So I'm in a bit of a euphoric dance mode lately. I'm by no means the best dancer in my area, but being actively sought as a partner and have good dances is really inspiring.

So, when life is truly beautiful, we all deserve to enjoy.I think it has a lot to do with the fact that some people like to nurse the miserable mood when it hits them. Somebody nearby who is happy encroaches on their misery, so I could see it being an irritant.

Meh...I dunno. I like trying to stay positive, or at least promote a positive attitude. I know it can be easy to slip into a miesrable state when things aren't going well, but I personally can't stand it.

I'm with you, Laura. I'm happy and grateful for having discovered the joys of ballroom with my husband as partner. After 10 years of playing at our hobby together I can honestly say that there is no one I would rather dance with (not even my most excellent and charming instructor).
We plan our vacations around fun places to dance. Next month it will be the Independence Day cruise on the QM2, "biggest ballroom at sea".
Life doesn't get any better than this.

Thanks, sag and Medira!!
All my dance friends are in Europe for a month!!! The three couples I'm closest to are meeting up in Europe for a cruise, with lovely side trips to Italy and I am so envious!
But I count on them to talk to, sit with, dance with, and everything, you know how that is!
So, I haven't gone out dancing yet! But I don't want to wait a whole month, either!
What shall I do, my DF peeps?
Time to get stronger and make new friends, eh?

Sad, but true. Good luck with the dance outing, when you decide. Maybe a group class? That way, you could meet some new people and get some dancing in, all at the same time. *shrug* :? 8)

Definitely check out a group class or even a social dance at a local studio. It shouldn't be too crowded and it will probably be good to help you get back into it a bit. Take your time though, and don't push too hard when you're just starting out again...most importantly though, have fun! :)

Being happy...

The word "happy" is not enough to describe what I feel right know!! :bouncy:
I have completed my exams and I spent my weekend in a Greel island, Spetses, with most of my classmates! It is a tradition to go to a trip with both your classmates and teachers when you finish school for ever!!!
Needless to say that both days I slept at 6-7 in the morning because I was dancing all night!! (and morning

Despite, this trip I am more than just HAPPY every time I dance!! I feel like I am in heaven :D
In a place where nothing else matters, where there are no problems, no obligations, nothing!! Just the music and my partner :D :D
I am in HEAVEN :D :D I am... honestly

It was something to do with an upload of the new rec.arts.dance forum.... I got a little tired with it myself and so took a break from df...cutting back on my participation for a while.
