The Globe and Mail is reporting that British Pathe, a cinema news service dating to the 19th century, has scanned one image for every second of their 3500 hours of 35mm film. That makes for 12 million images covering everything from the Boer War to the Beatles available on their web site!

I did a search on -ballroom dance- and found lots of cool stuff including a bunch of Charleston footage. Right now, the site is slow because it's getting hit hard, but give it a day or two and it should be fine.

I haven't checked this out yet. Has anybody else? Has the website overload subsided yet?

It's totally awesome. You can get free previews. This is an incredible find for dance historians. Here is a scene from Palais de Danse in Wimbledon 7/10/1926. The first dance is clearly Waltz. What is the second dance? Maxixe? Charleston?

Well, I can't seem to get a preview working, but go to the site and check it out.

Whew! Do her legs ever look funky when she's demonstrating the wrong way to do Charleston. What a hoot! I'm going to have to spend some time this weekend perusing those archives. It looks like there's some really cool stuff there. :D
