View Full Version : Why?

It seems that there are fewer Latin dancers than standard on this board. Maybe the ratio on the board reflects the real world. Why is that? Why do you think there are not as many Latin dancers as standard dancers?

There are lots of latin dancers. Perhaps they all go and dance street style instead? :)

Dunno... I dance American style, and I seem to be about the only one here, judging from the threads I've looked at so far.

This is interesting, usually it's the other way around... Mostly latin... :eyebrow:
I would think there are tons of more latin dancers than standards. I know for a fact there are way more people in my salsa class than my ballroom class. I think it's because young people prefer latin dances more?? It's something you can dance at clubs and not just at social dance events.

American Smooth or Rhythm? Because there are few smooth guys here :o)

My experience is that latin dancers tend to be younger dancers (20-30's) than standard/smooth dancers. We might have a bigger group of older dancers on this board, thus there is more standard/smooth people.

Actually there are a few of us on the board - but we are in the minority. I dance Smooth pro/am as that is my preferred style but I have recently picked up an Am partner for standard as there aren't any ams in my neck of the woods to dance smooth with.

I dance mostly American style, and I love the Rhythm/latin dances.
From what I've seen at comps over the years, more students compete in Smooth/Standard because they find it easier, they say.
It's all good! :D

A number of American dancers (including myself ) weighed in for the thread American smooth & rhythm vs. intl. standard (http://www.dance-forums.com/viewtopic.php?t=10077).
I can't speak to the Standard/Latin question, however.

I've always thought that latin comes easier to most people. If we take 'Dancing with the stars' as an example of pro-am comp, contestants seem to have a much easier time with latin dances.

i think the question was international latin (ballroom style) versus ballroom standard and smooth, (not american vs. international or street style versus ballroom style.)

You see the same trend if you look at the USA Dance Nationals registration. Many more standard couples when compared to latin.

I'm an American Style Siver Dancer in both Smooth and Rhythm for the past 7 years. It doesn't hurt that Sunshine is the best Rhythm Girl on the Pro Circuit.

i think from the very beginning there were some very helpful "standard" people on this board, which made it very interesting and helpful for the standard daancers to join...
And after a while we got a nice group here. Standard dancers attaracted more standard dancers.

Hmm. Haven't noticed that ratio. Whenever I had problems with my Latin, I had loads of responses and whenever I had problems with my Smooth, I also had loads of responses. But if the ratio is true, I'd have to go with Sagitta. Latin dancers frequent the streets and the Salsa threads.

Both. Rhythm is fun, but I think I enjoy the challenge of smooth more. There's nothing like the feeling of doing a really good, gliding waltz. (There's nothing like the feeling of a bad one either! )

S'ok. I'm still pretty new here. I've been lurking for a while to see what people here talk about. I compete some but my level basically is full bronze / beginning to intermediate silver, depending on the dance. So far I've made the most progress in waltz, tango, rumba, and WCS (how's that for a combination?). In my area, the social dancing scene is bigger than the comp scene. I like both, so I try not to limit myself. This probably holds back my progress a bit, but I'm having fun. Nearly everyone in my area dances American style -- I only know of one couple at our club that dances International on a regular basis. I have wanted to learn something about international rumba and waltz, but right now it's one thing too many. My wife and I are building a house, and we're doing good just to find practice time (or space) right now.

I started out as a Latin/Rhythm dancer. I was told it was my strength and to "not even bother" trying Smooth or Standard outside of social dancing.
Once my husband and I started dancing together, we wanted a change of pace and found that we really love Standard. We still dance Latin out socially, so I guess you could say we are dual style dancers. We both feel that one should generalize first then specialize later.

Define younger or older. ;p
I place myself in the older category because I'm over 30. Someone over 50 might say I'm in the "younger" category comparitavely speaking. :)

When you say latin, most people are really not clear on what exactly you mean. Can't really speak for the others, but there are a few of us around (some of us are quite good too! :P ). We're just too busy practicing to answer :P

Hi Jenn!
Glad to know you're watching
As far as why there seems to be fewer International Latin dancers .vs International Standard......
Don't know. In my experience, International Latin is just one of those things that either courses through your veins from the very start, or will require much struggle and training. Most people I know fall into the latter category. *shrug*

In my area, I think the people who really love latin are in the minority compared to smooth/swing.
My theory :eyebrow: is that once you get beyond the basics, latin is more overtly sensual than other dances and many people are not comfortable expressing that, especially with strangers.

I think there are more latin dancers around, they are just less likely to participate in online forums for some reason ???
