Hi all,
Just wondering of any of you out there can reccomend any good ballroom dancing newletters or magazines I can subscribe to.
A) Want to learn more about the sport/art
B) Would like to contact them regarding advertising.
Any input would be appreciated. Thanks all.

USA Dance, Inc. (formerly the U.S. Amateur Ballroom Dance Assoc.) puts out a magazine called "Amateur Dancers." They put pdf versions on their web site at www documents.usabda.org/1545 I've been fairly impressed with the content. I assume one gets the magazine in the mail when one joins the organization.

Also, The one that is put out by the Hilarys...... Ack! Can't remember that one either.... Oh yeah! DanceSport Magazine....

Now why didn't I think of subscribing to a dance mag? Oh right! I can't afford it!
Online mags are, however, a different tale...

Google "Dance News" out of the UK. Best dance mag I've ever read.

Thought I'd bring this thread back to life and ask again: Do you get a dancesport-specific magazine? I'm not really up on the US ballroom scene and really wish there were a magazine that addressed, well, all the sorts of things discussed on these forums, plus comp info, interviews with pros, etc ...
Does there actually exist a publication that does all that, or should I just up and start my own? :) Do you think it's a good value to get a ballroom mag? What would you want to see in a publication?
I just finally joined USADance and am looking forward to getting their publication ...

I get Dance Beat, and it while it does have comp info and interviews with the pros, it isn't really a hard-hitting news journal. It's more of a "trade newspaper." But still it's interesting enough that I've been a subscriber for about five years now.
As far as I've seen, no one puts out an honest-to-god third-party journalism-based newspaper or magazine about dancesport.
The USA Dance magazine, "American Dancer," used to be completely worthless (back when it was "Amateur Dancer"). Now it's improved, but still very much a "trade mag" or fancy newsletter.

Hey! There's no reason a trade newspaper can't have hard-hitting news. (Sorry, I'm a little sensitive. I work for a trade publication and some people think we're just a newsletter for the industry. We try very hard to bring fully researched and original articles to our readers each week.) :)

Sorry Wyllo, I didn't mean to disparage trade mags...I was just trying to come up with a word to describe these mags that...how about "fanzine?" Yes, Dance Beat and American Dancer are more like "fanzines" than real news vehicles that would have investigative reports and so on.

Haha - me too (have worked for a handful of trade mags) ... I know what you mean.
I wonder how interested people would be in regular features on the periphery of dance but still of strong interest to dancers (as evidenced here) ... like fitness/nutrition, dance etiquette (like a 'dear Abby' column), travel tips, dance music reviews? 'Localized', of course, for ballroom :)

That sounds a lot like Dance Beat. It's just that Dance Beat doesn't report on tougher issues, like when we talk here about sandbagging, or high-pressure studio sales tactics, or other things we don't like. Every so often there might be a little something, but it's really not their goal to dig into the underbelly of dancesport. I think it would be interesting if someone could and did -- but the problem is that dancesport is so small in the US that everyone knows everyone and so people are uncomfortable with too much digging.

Oh, I didn't think it was disparaging! I'm just saying that being a trade publication is not a reason to avoid running analytical or controversial articles.
I don't think it's necessarily "bad" if Dance Beat or AD choose to play it safe since there is a market for that, I just think it would be nice if someone took risks every once in awhile.

One thing that's bothered me is how much of an info gap there is between pro/am and am/am, dancers not to mention chain-studio dancers ... it seems like everyone's got their own 'islands' of sources of information, and there's so much of a lack of communication. Thing is (and back to the politics again), would people be interested in a publication that talked about dancesport as *dancesport*, or would the pro/am-am/am-studio silos get in the way?
