I found a great book at the library about Cuban music and culture--
Last Dance in Havana-The Final Days of Fidel and the Start of the New Cuban Revolution by Eugene Robinson
I have not done much salsa dancing but this book is so interesting. The author is assistant managing editor of the Washington Post.
I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in dancing, especially salsa but not limited to that. Great insight into the Cuban people, their spirit and drive.
From the back cover: There's a national newscast on Cuban tv every night...the music of Cuba is the real news. Those who make the music are the real journalists, analysts, social commentators. To understand what's happening in Cuba, you have to meet the musicians and listen to their fabulous music. Then you have to go out and dance.
