people keep mentioning that they might have split.
If anyone knows anything, please post here and let all of us interested know.

Sorry Kitty, we prefer not to gossip here. If there is an official statement then we can post a copy of that and then discuss it. But until then we at Dance Forums ask everyone to respect Giampiero and Frantsiska's privacy.

well, the gossip is already around.
I created the topic so that someone could share official information if they have it.

I "officially" don't have a partner but people keep feeding me hopes and mentioning that there are possibilities. Where?

O.K., enough of space fillers.... maybe next time when someone says that to you, ask them to find you a partner  !

Truth is, it is all the good ones that are already taken.
Being partnerless in a city with a relatively small dancing scene is weird. You are practically waiting for someone to split up or move to the city.
I found one partnerless guy who is not very good right now, but is willing to train hard... I would work with him, but now he told me he will probably relocate in 9 months...
I just had too much of that. My previous 2 partners both moved away. One to another state and one to another country

NY is a city with relatively small dancing scene?? Try where I live!! Everyone in my studio is 40+, every partnerless guy who i want to try out with is either not interested in working hard or not interested to put in the time to practce, this is very frustrating!!

ok, maybe I didn't say it right. the dancing scene is not small. It is the competitive dancing scene that is small.
also it gets smaller and smaller as levels go up.

question is what is the top. In other countries where ballroom as a sport is more popular, I would be considered a beginner as the average level is very high. and as a beginner I would have a lot of people at a similar level to pick from. It would still be relatively easy at my level...
here I am a competent advanced dancer, and though I'm not at the top yet, there are literally very few people at my level to pick a partner from.
for comparison, in Russia an average competition in Moskow would have a couple hundred couples in the champ level, and a couple hundred in the prechamp. In that kind of scene there are always people out there looking for a partner.
in NY, prechamp rarely has more than an incomplete semi (and most of the couples participating are not even local).

You are absolutely right. But given the vast diversity of "things to do" in NY, it all comes down to choices. To be at your level takes a lot of practice and commitment - not something everyone's willing to do. It all comes down to interests and priorities, unfortunately, not everyone who picks up dancing will end up in your level, it's just not their "thing". It's just statistical fact that for those people who've ever tried dancing, only a few will stay, and maybe only 1 or 2 will have the perseverance to keep on advancing to the prechamp/champ level.

yes. But I feel that's a unique situation. I would ideally want an open partner, but I am not familiar with open choreography. I'm perfectly fine with waltz (got plenty of practice with my last partner who was at the open level) and ok with tango and foxtrot. But I can't really do open quickstep, so I am not a "competent open person" yet.
it is different in syllabus though, or when you are securely open. so yes I feel in between.
but it is not my in-betweenness that limits me in finding a partner.
I have not yet tried out with a single standard guy at the prechamp level. I mean, it is not like there are guys around to try out with, but I am just not good enough to get them to dance with me. There are just no guys. And actually there are not too many girls either...

Probably because the numerically larger part of the NY field does pre-champ when they are what, 12? Wheras those passing through pre-champ in adulthood are fewer in number.

Same thing back there. There is actually a guy who is currently not dancing, but used to compete at prechamp level. As another New Yorker, here is a question.
How did you find the time and money to get to your current level?
Unfortunateley I do not think many New Yorkers have the luxury of money and time.
I would love to dance more. My biggest problem is time. A 40 hour week work is a vacation for me.
Good luck finding a partner. If you Dance they will come.

time and money somewhat depend on what your priorities are. For me dancing has been top priority in the past year.
actually getting to my current level didn't cost too much money. (well, according to my mom it did cost an insane amount of money, but it really cost very little compared to what may people spend)
I didn't put "too much" time in while in syllabus. But that depend on what is too much for you.
For one year I typically had 1 lesson every 2 weeks (though by the end of the year it was becoming 1 lesson every week) and practiced about 6 hours per week. I also did only one style, to concentrate my efforts.
I had an amateur partner I do't think what I did is really possible without a partner (unless you are willing to spend a lot more money). And I picked best teachers. Teachers that I think provide most value for the money.
I was in college so I had a more time and flexibility than those who work. I know though people who work and still manage to put in a lot more hours than I did. (for example, Katarzyna) All depends on your priorities...

It's a matter of priority, imo.......
It's hard to desceibe, but everyone has a busy life.
During school, I have 18 hrs of classes each week (that's pure time spent in the classroom), then time spent for homework and studying, and then I work 15 hrs a week, and still manage to dance and mantain fairly high grades. This is no where less than a 40 hour work week.
Right now, I work about 40~45 hrs a week, and I have a one-hour commute each way to dance, but I still manage to do it. Of course, my days are just work, dance, shower and sleep. That's about it. There are sacrificies to make, but it's doable.
Speaking of money, if you practice enough, you can really make a lot of progress with just a few lessons. Practicing is not expensive at all if you have a partner (it's about $4.25 per hour per person if you get a card). I don't think Kitty spent a lot of money or took a lot of lessons to get to where she is right now.
Yes, it does get very pricy when you don't have a partner and can only do pro/am. But even that, it's still affordable in most cases in the beginning when you are taking one lesson per week and you have a stable job. To play the pro/am game at the top level is a different story as you would then need to compete a lot to be seen by judges, and then with all the politics involved it does become a matter of money.

Okay, Kitty, I just want you to remember that YOU said these words, words that I said months ago and you told me "bahhhh -- it's not that hard to find a partner":
There are just no guys
Bahhhhh!!!!
Okay. don't mean to kick you while you're down. I hope you find someone. Have you tried dancepartner.com?
Kitty
08-10-2005, 03:11 PM
I still stand by my words.
I'm pretty sure I'll find someone... But won't neccessarily be perfectly happy with him (at least for a while)...
I didn't mean to say there are no guys... I meant, there are no perfect guys.
And there are no perfect girls either. so it is tough for guys as well...
I think the number of available acceptable guys around is proportional to the time you've been partnerless. inversely proportional to the amount of money you have that you can spend on pro/am. and inversely proportional to your level.
mamboqueen
08-10-2005, 03:16 PM
well, there's more perfect girls than there are perfect guys (ducking!) Except for the df guys, who are as close to perfect as one can get
I'll stand by my words, too. I think NYC is the place to find a partner. A higher concentration of male dancers....and probably a higher concentration of gay male dancers (and I only make this distinction because that means more available men to dance with and less marriages to have to break up  )...
I'm sure you'll find someone. It's just (as Tom Petty said) 'the waiting is the hardest part."

Ayuh. I've had four partners. The first three for only one comp, and these were all disolved for good reasons, but it taught me to be more choosy wiht my fourth. However, I've only done one comp with this one, and perhaps never again, because she is tending to her ill mother who has cancer, and who knows what lies around the bend on this. Thus, life moves forward, and it just goes to show you, nothing is ever as certain as we feel. ;) 8)

slow slow quick quick slow slow quick quick... bronze am. foxtrot...
and then when your body and mind are ready you find out that you can pretty much walk in any direction with a partner in a ballroom hold. the most important thing is too keep your body over your feet, and keep your frame without shifting. You don't need to call a figure "quater turn" or anything else to do it. You can make up any figure as long as it is possible to do that figure with a partner.
so when you are there. when you just walk with a partner doing random or not so random stuff automatically, because you've practiced it so much, that it became automatic, then it doesn't really matter whether you are a leader or a follower. ifyou are a leader, you initiate direction of movement and then follow the follower. If you are a follower, you follow the leader's intention as you understand it, then see if he follows, and follow him again.
I think everyone is following everyone, and the difference is only who intiates the movement.
if you want to lead specific figures in a dance, then yes, you need some practice (but if you know the follower's part very well, it wont' take too much time to learn to reverse it)
This only works though if you are proficient with the dance. For example, I've never learned hustle (though I can follow it), so I'can't really make up the moves as I have no idea what this dance should even look like.
but I can lead some stuff in every standard dance, even though I heven't really practiced it much as a leader. I am comfortable enough with these dances so that i can reverse it in my head, or at least do something simple, without too much trouble.
of course there are certain tricks a leader should know about leading specific things. But followers often end up knowing them too. For example, I know what I need from a leader in a contra check. I can lead it ok: I'm just trying to give the follower what I would like to feel from a leader in a contracheck. Of course, this is high level dancing, as a follower, when you don't just do your stuff when you are lead, but you know exactly what and how you are doing and what you need from the leader in order for it to work. I can't lead throwaway oversway because I don't exactly know how it works even as a girl (though I can sort of do it with a leader).
so basically I try to give the follower the same as I want from the leader if I was following. Because I am stable on my feet and experienced in partner dancing, I am able to pull it off...
if you know how it works with a partner and how 2 bodies fit together (standard) or work together and how connection works (latin), then it doens't really matter much which part to dance. Both partners end up following each other.

wow really?
I guess it depends...
When we dance with Kat, in standard at least I end up following her a lot. I sort of indicate where I want to go, and she does her girl's part exactly right, and powerfully. She just goes into the right position and I follow her. She makes sure she is the right place all the time. and since I am a good follower, I make sure I follow her and end up in the right place as well...
When you have a very active follower, I guess it is easier. Because I actually end up following her body position.
sometimes she does something different from what I intended, then I consider that I learned how to lead a new step...

Kitty's leading post is similar to an idea I was once taught by a very well know argentine tango teacher...
He made sure that I understood the difference between the concept of "lead and follow" and the concept of "marking"...
The system he taught required a leader to communicate to the "follower" the direction and speed of a step... and she would the react AND MOVE BEFORE THE MAN...
as she moved, the man the would move, and place his foot.. and time it to touch the floor at the same time as the lady..
Comunicate direction and speed "MARK" or (send) the lady, follow her movement, place and time your foot accordingly..
I belive this is a great system, and as I learn more and more, I hear more things that support this system of "lead and follow" in standard ballroom..
Maybe a better terms would be..
Communicate, wait for responce, react to responce..."

I belive this is a great system, and as I learn more and more, I hear more things that support this system of "lead and follow" in standard ballroom..
when I was a beginner I was taught that in standard the lady's job is to 1) follow the movement of the man (came naturally) and 2) stay on the man's left (that took a lot of practice)
when you are a follower the correct place to step is relative to your partner. There is no "backing diagonal wall is correct for step one of a natural turn"... everything is relative to the leader.
so when I lead, I think I am doing the same thing. indicate the movements and positions to the follower and then move myself in such a place that I would maintain my posititon on the left of the girl. (Yes, if the follower is on the left of the man, that means the man is on the left of the follower...)
so when I am leading, I indicate where and how I want to go and then go myself to the right position relative to the follower.
I do this in latin as well. The rigt position is where I should be relative to my partner. But due to greater variety of positions, it is more difficult to explain than in standard, where it is just always on the left.

08-16-2005, 09:30 AM
er, your left, man's right...Right, unless you're looking at it from the point of view of the leader. (At least that's how I understood it from Kitty's post) The leader is positioned to the left of the follower from the leader's point of view. From the follower's point of view, the leader is positioned to her right.

I wouldn't mind that. It think I am getting too thin.
