hi
We have a purist dance teacher, who only plays music from the 30s and 40s. I also like to dance to neo-swing. And funk can be also very nice to swing to- there are some nice tunes out. (maceo parker got some) But what do you guys think? does swing and funk work?

Funk is better for WCS.

However, everyone has their own preferences. Trying finding a parther willing to experiment and dance to some music you like to see if it works. Chances are you're not going to change the mind of the purist, but at other locations you can dance to other music if you know it works.

never danced wcs. ( i know chandra, you always told me i should try), - it doesn't really matter what she thinks, she is just the teacher, not the dj. So we put on what we like - which includes also funk :D

she got style though. Real style. but than - who cares what she thinks (except that she'll let me stuck in one course forever if i won't take her style into mine). People say i'm a fast learner and i should move on, but she won't let me :? oh well. When she looks, i do what she says, otherwise, I LIVE the dance. She should be thankful. i brought her two new students, who love to swing, because I started them on it. :D

If you really want to mess with her (or anyone, or just for fun), put on a Hip Hop song and LINDY to it!

It's a little weird at first, but definitely possible! Lindy has the swinin' feel when you dance it, but Lindying to Hip Hop gives a push-&-pull feel since the beat is different. But it does work, if you try it and modify your Lindy a little on the fly.

if i want to freak her out, i just have to put on neo-swing, that's enough. BBVD or CPD

I am decidedly anti-purist in my music tastes, but I think you'll just have to accept that the vast majority of lindy-hoppers out there despise neo-swing. I personally have nothing against it, but IMO most of it simply sucks compared to the "traditional" stuff, so I never end up playing it.

there is pretty cool stuff out, - and pretty bad stuff. Lavay smith for example is pretty cool. SNZ were pretty, they don't exist anymore, same with Indigo Swing.

Lavay Smith is not Neo-Swing. Her band are all jazz and blues musicians. Som eof them have played rock, but as the Red-Hot Skillet Lickers they only play jazz and blues.

Neo-Swing means punk, rock or ska with jazz improvisation and some horns... It can be fun to listen to but most of it sucks for lindy hop.

Most non-jazz music is terrible for lindy hop. Either you are doing lindy moves with the wrong everything or you are ignoring the music playing... either way "it ain't lindy hop".

A dance is defined by an aesthetic, a set of technical elements, and its connection to the music (the rhythms it uses as well as it's interaction). No matter how much you or anyone else wants to try and call a dance to non swinging music lindy hop it isn't. I'm sure I'm not going to change anyones opinions, but having the opinion that the sky is plaid doesn't make it any less wrong.

Now I'm not a "purist" lindy hop works to all sorts of swinging music, but it must swing and be in the jazz blues traditions otherwise the base rhythm and structure are going to be wrong.

There is a reason why West Coast and Carolina Shag and the like are no longer lindy hop... the music split and lindy hop stayed to one branch that kept with certain elements and ECS, WCS and CS developed out dancing lindy moves to other music.

Now if your goal is to push yourself and see how the dance grows and changes great. Super. I can stand behind that 100,000%. I love ECS, WCS and CS and if people hadn't pushed past the boundaries and done their own thing I wouldn't be able to enjoy those dances... but please understand that what you are doing is NOT lindy hop.

we did mainly ecs to neo-swing. if you do the same moves to different music, it's not longer lindy? i don't get that. :?: please explain that in further detail.

@ d nice - if you are right - that might be the reason, of which we just have big band music in germany. for your information. we have afaik no neo-swing bands here at all.

Okay so look at it this way, what you know as a swing out exists in five different swing dances, same move. Same for sugar push, side pass, under arm turn etc. What seperates the dances from each other then if the moves are essentially the same? And when the moves are slightly different, why are they different. The rhythm of the music they are danced to is different. I'm not talking one being 4/4 the other being 3/4, I'm talking where the beat hits and how it is syncopated. If the rhythm is different how you step is going to be different. Of course the Harmonies are built off the Rhythms so they are going to be different and the Harmonies are what creates change in your styling and carriage.

Another way to look at it is language. French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian are all descended from Latin. If they use the same root words how are they different? The pronunciation, tempo, grammar, and slang are all different. As they continued to evolve in different geographic areas they resembled each other less and less. Same is true of dancing. When you take away the music that generated it you end up changing things to fit the music which creates a different dance.
