View Full Version : Asking guys to dance?

I have a girlfriend that I use to go out dancing with. The entire night consisted of her looking interested in dancing, while waiting for someone to ask her. I decided this didn't make any sense. So, when I go out (which is rare these days), I scan the dance floor for anyone that can dance salsa. Then, I go and ask them to dance. No one has ever turned me down.

Salseros: What do you think of a girl that asks you to dance, and how often does this happen?

Salseras: Do you stand around waiting on a dance, or go out to get it?

I love it when a girl asks me to dance with her; I've never and will never turned a girl down no matter how badly I need to take a break. I would rather pass out on the floor dancing with her than refusing to dance with her.

Nothing wrong with that! I take it as a great compliment when a girl asks me for a dance. It doesn't happen all of the time but often enough. And when they introduce me to their other gal pals afterwards, cool!

A little caution is advisable, though. Some may read more into your invitation to dance than they should.

See you on the dance floor...

And sometimes the guy guesses the girls, ermmm, "intentions" quite correctly ;)

any time, since you here anyway. wanna dance? :D
(never calculated how far hockenheim is)

it looks if you got a pretty cool salsa scene there. not every salsa scene is that cool.
btw, as cocodrilo mentioned, there is the same discussion going on - right here:

It's so nice to see the positive response from men here about women asking to dance! :D I do sometimes wonder what they think about it...

Salsera,
As I've said in other threads on this topic, I get most of dances by asking rather than being asked. I enjoy the night much more by doing so.
When I started dancing salsa socially, I never asked men to dance because:
1) I was a beginner and had no confidence.
2) I knew very few people there and felt shy.
3) it did not feel right for women to ask men. Yes, it's social conditioning.
So I certainly understand why women around me hesitate to ask men, especially strangers.

These days I usually get most of dances by asking. I rarely wait to be asked -- I only get asked either when I'm having a rest or when I'm looking for someone to dance (this includes being intercepted when I'm trying to ask someone else ). I feel I can make dance nights far more enjoyable by doing the asking myself, for the same reasons africana gave.

I like the direct approach (obviously;) ) because
(1) there are no strings attached, I don't have to build up and flirt up my target (too much work) before I ask.

(2) It's faster, when there are more follows than leads, you'll have a wait unless you stand close to your favorites the whole time

(3) I want to fit in as many quality dances as possible most of the time. That means choosing various salsa styles to match various songs. ... And doing the asking guarantees that I design my night out to be optimal.
There are even times when a guy asks (intercepts) me to dance and I think "damn! I wanted to dance to this song with xxx -- this one is not for your style!" Not that I say that out loud.

I am flattered and encouraged when a woman asks me to dance. It just makes me glad to know that the lady was bold enough to get out of her comfort zone and flip the script for once. I get asked to dance sometimes, but rarely (unless there's a bigger salsero shortage than usual....even I get asked to dance on nights like that ;-}) so I appreciate the few times that I do. I never turn down a dance from a lady unless she asks when I've already promised another salsera a dance (which is even more rare....), and even then I make sure I track her down later and dance with her. I figure a lady who is brave enough to ask a guy to dance when she doesn't have to deserves one!
