Just saw the cover of Maxim Magizine, featuring Kelly onaco, "Summer"s Hottest Star Sweeps Us Off Our Feet". The pictorial is hot and Kelly looks fab. The interview is interesting for the fact that the interviewer, Eric Gillin,
does a fairly decent job of asking the questions, and Kelly did a great job with her answers. Two of the more edgy question were, "Were there any romantic sparks between you and your partner" Kelly answered that "Alec is a gentleman, an extemely sophisticated, smart young man. Never once did I feel violated or any thing we were doing was inappropriate or uncalled for. He was extremely professional".
Then the interviewer asked Kelly, But that GREASY RUSSIAN had his grubby hands all over you! Kelly then gave a great answer to that question. She said "If that's what the audience is seeing , then we did our job well. That's what these dancesare about- the passion the lust and the vulnerability. If they're seeing that and want to be in his position, that's wonderful. I think I'm conditioned from being in this business, especially on soaps, because it's just part of the job".
Way to go, Kelly!

Great interview questions. (sarcasm implied) Let's insult a huge part of the world's population and be completely ignorant of who makes up the art of ballroom and latin dancing.
Talk about perpetuating outdated, bigoted stereotypes. :headwall:
I'm not Russian, or a man, nor do I dance latin competitively, and I am completely offended by that jackasses question. Why do they allow people to conduct interviews when they have no idea what the HELL they're talking about?
Way to go, indeed. I;m sure Eric Gillin be nominated for some kind of prize for his journalistic depth. If that's doing a "fairly decent job" then what does he have to do for it to be deemed a bad job?

i sort of see your point but keep in mind that Maxim doesn't really um shoot for the high journalistic standards. the entire publication is founded upon an insulting view of women, so that somebody said something derogatory about an entire nation of people shouldn't really suprise :)

It might be worthwhile to try see past the pictures of the beautiful women, and actually read the magazine? Maxim is about making fun of itself, popular culture, and above all, men. You can find all sorts of unflattering terms describing men there, and some of us who actually read it find it quite funny. I’m not completely sure that it has offended men of every possible background yet, but I think they are getting pretty close. Some of the most intelligent beautiful women I know read Maxim, and they had subscriptions for Maxim longer than I did. Maybe they are not blinded by the pretty pictures and actually got the humor?

or, maybe it's just not to some people's taste.
*shrug* i agree that it's equal-opportunity offensive - no argument there - but the joke gets old pretty fast. and it's kind of silly to say one shouldn't be "blinded by the pretty pictures" - that's all maxim and mags like it are about. that's like saying you shouldn't read shakespeare and be overwhelmed by the careful use of language.
in a world glutted by infotainment, i certainly pick and chose what i want to spend my time on, so no, i won't be trying to "see past" anything. lad magazines have a definite bent, editorially and aesthetically, and whie they certainly appeal to many people including women, they don't to me.
not because i don't get it, but because i do.

Eh! My take? This isn't of world-shattering importance, unless you consider what a boost little Miss Kelly (sp?) is giving to ballroom dance in this country. If it weren't for little miss bouncing boobies, millions of soap opera fans and, now, Maxim readers, might well be oblivious to the ballroom studios under their very noses.
So eh. Interview away. Just boost ballroom while you're at it. It's all good. 8)

So I happened to up late last night and caught the repeat of Kelly and Alec's appearance on the Tonight Show. Leno almost completely ignored Alec but when Leno did address him it was in a fake Russian accent. The poor guy, I felt so bad for him! (I had not seen it the first time it was aired.)
And, I felt Jay was playing to the lowest common denominator with that kind of "humor". That's what irked me about this original thread. Why is it o.k. to make fun of some people? Alex Mazo has worked harder than Jay, or the Maxim interviewer, ever will. Leaving his home country and learning to speak a new language has earned Alec my respect. This is above and beyond his dancing talents.
It's never o.k. to ridicule someone based on their ethnicity, accent or culture. I realize that I'm preaching to the choir here, but I just can't believe some people act like such dunderheads and have their own network show or get to write for a magazine. Have these people been living in a box their whole lives? Do they not know someone from a culture other than their own? I'm talking singularly here but, really this world is a multi-cultural village, let's start looking at it as such. And, question those that don't.
Damn, I 'm all fired up! I'm stepping down off my soapbox now.

I agree. I think your wording is very good -- "the lowest common denominator." Pretty cheap "humor," IMO. :(
That said, to have anything even mildly ballroom-related in Maxim? Eh. Who was it that said, "There's no such thing as bad publicity?" Even if the magazine is soft porn and the interviewer is a "dunderhead" (I love your flair for words 8) ) that's millions more people who're being exposed to the sport. Some of them might actually dance because of it. I think a lot of people -- men, women, idiots, intellects, you name it -- read magazines like Maxim. So let Maxim help get the word out. 8)

And yes indead it said "greasy russian", even I couldn't really believe the interviewer actually said that. If they call Alec a greasy russian, I wonder what they would call Louis and Jonathan....

If you're talking about Josh Long and Troy, they were from my high school. (I just graduated back in May). It was...nerve-wracking, that's for sure. Then when they got back, their parents followed them EVERYWHERE. First of all, Josh was a senior, and he just didn't come back to school after that (it wasn't that far from the end of the school year), and then his parents even came with him to prom! I swear I'm not kidding. Kind of endearing, but sort of embarrassing for him at the same time I'll bet.

More and more I feel that kelly monaco is just a publicity ho. If she had any kind of respect for alec, or ballroom dancing for that matter, she wouldn't have allowed that question to be published like that. Come to think of it, she wouldn't have posed in maxim to begin with. Seriously, how high up in the clouds must your head be to change your name to Monaco... (I'm pretty sure that's not her real last name)

I'm not sure how these interview/photo layouts work but my guess is that she has no power to decide what questions Maxim does or does not publish. I haven't seen the article but from what I can tell, even though the interviewer used the word 'greasy' during the interview, she seems to have by and large ignored it. Some things are so stupid they have to be ignored.

Some things are so stupid they have to be ignored.
There's a good chance the interviewer never said "greasy russian" in the interview. Those Q & A formats rarely reflect the actual interview. Its edited and shortened and the order is changed to make a better article. And while you wouldn't change Monaco's answers, other than to clean them up (usually don't see "ums" in interviews), the writer or editor probably wrote he questions that were published post-interview. The writer may or may not have been involved in all of those decisions and Monaco certainly wasn't.
Most writers have an article they really liked until an editor messed with it. Of course, most writers also have a portfolio of artilces that are better for the hard work of a good editor. :D
Man, all y'all have zero sense of humor (obvious exceptions).

I have to say I'm with LennJS on this one. I think Kelly is milking the publicity for all it's worth. *shrug* Not sure if that's a good or bad thing. It just is, IMO. 8)

If they call Alec a greasy russian, I wonder what they would call Louis and Jonathan....
A greasy Dutchman and a greasy Yank? ;)
That was a rhetorical question, Joe. It didn't need an answer, and definitely not one like this.
People, I ask you, where is the love?
Wasn't there a song with those words in it once ... "where is the love". ;)

Somehow I have a feeling you don't mean The Black Eyed Peas' rendition...
But yeah. There was a Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway classic back in the seventies, and a Black Eyed Peas rap tune (totally unrelated) a few years ago. 8)

I liked the pictures. I didn't read any articles. I didn't buy the magazine.
I saw the front cover, didn't pick it up, but it sounds like I might have missed something? My curiosity is beginning to get the best of me. ;)

Yikes. Kelly Monaco's not the only publicity ... um ... prostitute. Did anybody besides me sign up with the the Dancing with the Stars site and now start receiving ABC daytime television spam? Grr. :x :headwall:

 What little boxes? Grr. :headwall: :(
ABC daytime television? I've never watched that. Never. Well, except for a brief stint at the height of the Luke and Laura saga. But I think two decades away should be enough to gain me absolution from soap-opera spam.

You can probably still uncheck them. Usually if you go to the privacy policy section or if they have something like a "My Account" page.

Yeah. Thanks for the suggestion. There has to be a way to get rid of the junk mail. :? If I didn't delete the email yet (a big if) I'll look to see if there's an unsubscribe link at the bottom. :?

Sign up? It isn't one of those websites where you can just go and look? Does it have a cost? Why would one sign up for it?
Gosh if I was going to "sign up", seems to me asking for my email address meant they'd send me stuff, and hopefully would request of me whether or not I want it.
Seems like a case of caveat emptor.

I always make sure I uncheck everything whenever I put my e-mail anywhere. I had the same account for 6 years, and I only get 4-5 junk e-mails a day..

Ah! So there are boxes that can be checked for whatever. Seems more like it. :DAh, but usually the developers put the checkmarks in the boxes by default when the page loads. So, you have to be aware of what you're doing, since they're trying to snag the people who just fly through those pages without reading all the way through. At least, that's how the majority of people get caught. Surprisingly enough, there are actually people who purposely sign up for this stuff.

I purposely sign up for some stuff. Just not ABC daytime TV newsletters. Like uhh... soap operas? Nope. Been there, kicked the addiction. So never again. Not that they're not fun and entertaining. Maybe they're too fun and entertaining. I have too much going on in my life to go down that path right now. (All due respect to the soap opera buffs among us. 8) )
