When you girls are not wearing tights, do you typically have to shave "down there"

I HATE hair removal of any kind down there, but I see no way around it sometimes. I'd be curious to hear pain-free, quick, effective ideas on HOW to get rid of it without that gods-awful growback. NOT COOL for close-fitting couture!

(don't worry- I'm normally the one who first assaults people for innuendo questions. This, IMO is a very valid quandry... even if it's REALLY awkward to discuss with malefolk around. Yet another case of "you bstrds have it so much easier with your danglybits! Grr!")

I "do" my bikini line, yes. You have to, if you're a lady who wants to wear a swimsuit, unless you're blessed with little body hair. It's part of my routine in the bath -- the razor hits the armpits, lower legs and bikini line.

A leotard doesn't show any more than a swimming costume.

Ditto about the bikini line (I don't wear leotard since I'm a social salsa dancer, but I swim regularly), and can I say that this topic is NOT sexual at all, and you have nothing to worry about being banned, milla. 8) This is simply about something you need to consider re. dancewear/costume. A totally valid topic, in my opinion. We also have threads about male body hair and dancing buried somewhere in these forums.

Queen of hair removal here...

Bikini wax....Hurts like a.............(you get the point) the first time, but not because it's actually painful. It's awkward. Your skin gets pulled in ways that are not usual and you have a stranger down there pulling your hair out. Your're nervous and therefore tense. It is a very very odd experience. BUT, if you go to someone regularly, it's no different than visiting a doctor. It doesn't become less painful because you become numb to it, but because you are more comfortable after a few times and therefore more relaxed.

It's my favorite option. I go only for emergencies...i.e. beach season, performances so I'm not spending $30 every 6 weeks to have it done regularly. The first time can result in some missed hairs, make sure you're not shaving there for two weeks before hand...there needs to be something for the wax to grip and for all the hair to in a similar stage of growth cycle so that two days later you're not getting some resessive folicl activating.

Electrolysis...takes a while, costs a lot. If it were cheaper I would do it. It's permanent. People say it's painful? Eh, did have an area (not bikini line) done and fell asleep during it. It's more like sharp static electricity. You can shave inbetween treatments and only need two days of growth before a treatment. Most use topical anethetics too in case you have senstive skin.

Laser...see above, not as permanent.

Nair or Veet...They do nothing for me. Other people swear by them, nmy body just doesn't react. But they are the cheapes quickest ways to do it without the problem of a 5 o'clock shadow between the legs and stubble, which as mentioned before...is itchy.

Would you PLEASE read that again and point out exactly where you perceive me angry at you? Nobody likes to be misinterpreted, and I believe I was.

If you need it spelled out, no, I wasn't angry with you. Did anyone else think I was angry with her? Anyone? Bueller?

Do I really need to go back to school and learn how to write my own language, or are people just less-than-perceptive? This frustrates the hell out of me when I think I've spelled something out on a rudimentary level so that it can be understood, and then even that isn't.

Hmm... Not sure what to say, here, since I see both points of view.

Yes, macha, you do sometimes come across as upset or angry, before people get to know you, especially people who are conflict-averse. But, in the (how many?) months I've "known" you online, I think I've gotten a little bit of a feel for your personality, and you're a sweetie-pie (or is that a sweet baby colt? ) at heart, IMO. Or, at a minimum, just a regular person mostly without claws. :)

Online communication hasn't even begun to approach the person-to-person thing, in terms of understanding each other. So these things happen, IMHO. 8)

I've had electrolysis(where they stick a needle in your hair follicle and zap it with a current of elecricity) for my eyebrows and it is a very safe and effective way of permanent hair removal. My mom had her brows, legs, armpits and "moustache" done. I don't think she had here bikini line done, but many women have electrolysis down there. If I would be wearing a leotard on a regular basis I would DEFINITELY go in for electrolysis for my bikini area. No more shaving, tweezing, ingrown hairs, skin rashes- can you imagine? I'm actually surprised none of you dancers have had this done...

Also nice, no grey shading and 5 o'clock shadows. The new ingrown hairs as mentioned is great! No razer burn or worring when you go out whether or not you shaved and if someone will notice. Depending where you get it, it will kill sweat glands and cut down on sweating too.

My suggestion to anyone interested in getting electrolysis....

Ask around for someone.. In NYC many places have signs in the windows that they do it or you can look it up on the web. Instead, I had asked my doctor (who I trust very much) about a dermatologist thinking she could do it after removing a scar. She didn't but recommended someone who would and I love my electrolysist. You'd never find her place on your own although she is on the internet. It's nice having a recommendation to back her up though.

Skin, baby smooth.

Does it last forever?
Does it hurt?
Is it expensive?
There is Brazillian waxing, but Brazillian electrolysis?

I like my hair long and thick, but only on my head. I've tried lots of hair removal techniques. I've got it down to a routine, but to get rid of it completely... wouldn't that be heaven?

Does it last forever? Yes. The sam hair will grow out again, but it will be thinner and then the follicle will finally "die" and hair willnot grow out anymore. When undergoing electrolysis, you may have to go back several times even after your treatment is finished to yank some "stragglers", but it is forever(I LOVE my eyebrows! No pencil, tweezing or cutting. EVER!)

It is a tolerable pain. Certain parts of your face or body are more sensitive than others, but it's much less painful say than the dentist for example.

When I was going (to a littel studio in the San Francisco Bay area) I believe it was $14 a treatment. I think I went a total of 7 times for my eyebrows. I did this when I was back home for the summer. On my one-month vacation, I would go every 10 days or so. Did the same the next year. I highly recommend it. My mom LOVES the job she had done on her "mustache", legs, pits and brows!

lynn

If it's running you 3 digits, you are getting ripped off. I had my treatments at a tiny studio that was owned/operated by a friend of my mom's (I believe she normally charged $20 per visit) and the session lasted less than 30 minutes. This was also over 10 years ago, so naturally the prices have gone up to adjust to the economy.

I would suggest calling around and checking prices and also asking friends & getting recommendations. I do not know about laser treatments.

Is it possible to remove a tattoo without leaving behind ugly stuff? I've only seen one tattoo that had been removed, and the guy's arm was very disfigured. Of course, that was a long time ago. I assume laser surgery techniques have advanced a lot since then. :?

08-28-2005, 06:14 PM
Hey. Wait a second. Since when did breast augmentation get into the same category as piercing and tattoos? Uhh... I have to say I disagree with that categorization. Last time I checked, breast augmentation was fairly complex cosmetic surgery of fairly recent vintage. Piercing and tattoos are lightweight operations that have been around for centuries. Somehow I don't think Anne Bonny whatever, the 17th century female pirate, had breast augmentation... although I could be wrong. But tattoos? Maybe. 8)

To each his own, but uhhh... :?

cocodrilo
08-28-2005, 06:30 PM
In piercing, you can let the holes close up and in breast augmentation, you can have it corrected or have the inserts removed but if you are doing graffiti on your body by way of tattoo there is NO removing that. Yes, there IS laser removal, but it leaves a disfiguring scar. The larger the tattoo removed, the more obvious and hideous the scar area.

Tattoos are kind of "trendy" here at the moment and my college girls are asking my advise on whether they should get one. I simply offer these 2 words of advise; NO WAY!

pygmalion
08-28-2005, 06:58 PM
Yeah. I'd give similar advice on tattoos -- make sure you know what you're doing, because, either way, it's permanent. :? Still. We all have the right to choose. *shrug* 8)

cocodrilo
08-28-2005, 07:11 PM
If the student is really adamant on getting a tattoo, then I suggest he or she try one of those temporary ones, and to see how they like it. Some people may be very happy with that dolphin on their ankle, or the dragon spiraling down their arm, but if they get tired of it, they are going to have to live with it. (BTW, laser tattoo removal is practically unheard of over here. If the service is available, and I'm sure it is in the major cities in Japan, it would be very expensive.)

Actually, for me it's the other way around. Shaving leads to major irritation that lasts for days and days while it's all growing out, while the only waxing side effect is very mild tenderness and redness that goes away after a couple of hours. It really depends on how it's done, though.
It was kind of scary and awkward the first time around, but it's really not that bad. One trick is to go shortly after your period, because that's when you're least sensitive to pain. Supposedly.
