Does anyone know of good pop tunes for samba dancing? I'm planning a big birthday bash, and I've been able to find good music for virtually every other dance. Somehow, I can't see my friends dancing to my all-instrumental Afro-Cubano ballroom CD. The only samba I have so far is Lady Love, by Lou Rawls. Anyone?

Hmmm.... how about:

"Whenever, Wherever" by Shakira

everyone has probably heard it a million times by now, but it could do....

Macarena

lol! Not sure whether to laugh.....or cry. I guess samba 'music' is a relative term in this case....

On the "Nuyorican Soul" CD by Masters At Work, there's a George Benson tune called "You Can Do It baby" that's perfect for samba, just skip past the first 2.5 mins. though (it's a long solo-guitar passage) and get right to the dancing part.

Macarena??? Yikes, that is PURE EEEEEVVVIIIILLLLLLLLLL!!!

Bailamos by Enrique Iglesias
Ain't it Funny by Jennifer Lopez
Whenever Wherever by Shakira
Maria by Ricky Martin

I'm surprised that I can't think of more. I guess most of the pop tunes are Cha Cha beat.

Que Nadie Sepa Mi Sufrir - Julio Iglesias

A lot of the "current" reggae influenced songs work for samba. I first thought of Shaggy, but then the song "Baby Boy" with Beyonce is played on the radio a lot.

I just turned on the radio (pop hit type) and heard "If you want me to stay"--I'm not sure who the artist is--but I could definitely samba to it. Then an older song by Maxi Priest came on.

Beyond the radio, some sambas I've used-- Kiss Kiss by Stella Soleil, Young Americans by David Bowie. I usually end up with the "ballroom" sambas like "Baile de Osito", Ambosano and don't forget "Magalenha" by Sergio Mendes! And who could forget Juanes--he has a couple good sambas on "Un dia Normal".

Hey Mama - Black Eyed Peas
The Power of Bhangra (Vs Motivo) - Snap!

Two more that are good.

Zoinks! I must be totally out of touch. The song titles are drawing a blank for me. (Of course, I listen to mostly non-English-speaking radio stations. So I have no idea what they're saying. lol) I guess I'd better cruise over to Amazon and listen to some audio clips. :)

Well, if and123 is brave enough to mention Barry Manilow, I'll throw in Tom Jones' "It's Not Unusual".

If someone says who's Tom Jones, I'll scream too! :)

Actually, I've found a lot of pop music today has a samba beat. Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie" is really just a remix of a song on the Havana Nights soundtrack by Wyclef Jean called "Dance Like This." There's a bunch of good sambas on the Havana Nights soundtrack, actually--"Dance Like This" of course, as well as "Dirty Dancing," "Guajira (I Love U 2 Much)," and "Satellite."

"La Candela" by Yerba Buena's a good one too, and so are all the other songs that have already been mentioned.:-P

ETA: Ooh, I almost forgot--Ricky Martin's new song, "I Don't Care"...the lyrics are horrible, but the music's pretty cool and it's got a great samba beat!

Blondie's "Heart of Glass" can be danced as a samba or a hustle.

I know zip about samba but I was listening
to Copernicus by Basia and she makes a reference
to samba implying the song is a samba.
Could someone tell me if it is?
