Thanks Boo, glad you like them! :D

It's sort of funny to me, I post them, and I see how many views they each get, but there are very few comments, so I never quite know what people think!

I just added a few more photos this weekend taken at a funraiser for Griffin Hospital. We and some other dancers were hired to perform and get the crowd going. It was a blast. We actually got scouted while we were there by someone who has a bunch of gigs like that lined up. It's been a good week for this lindy hopper. :D

Ok, guys. I am finally going to post some pictures in the album.

Got some nice shots from Sydney Bacardi, all on a nice Kodak Picture CD (I havn't got a digital cam  ).

The question is: How do I go about posting....? Every time I put the disk in, it gives a slide show, with no option on the screen for me to save or send..........

 Sorry, I am a serious modern day dodo  . Me & technology just don't mix. My electral magnetic field has been known to be the cause that brought down the phoneline & internet connection of a whole building in Brooklyn NY  !

So please help me out here. I need step by step instruction ("For Dummies" style) here.......if you guys are interested to see what I look like........ ...........

Hey now Virg, I haven't seen one of you cept that tiny one you used to have on your avatar! Come on now, PUT ONE UP! :P

Well, half a picture is better than no picture, right? Oddly enough, on this monitor here I can see the other half of my face...grrr...its not supposed to do that!

I will put a real picture up soon as this one was just for kicks. And I do need to find one where I am smiling...well at least my idea of a smile anyway. I have some old Karate pics I could put up as well.

Salsachinita - What's up with this not sharing pictures with the rest of your DF friends? We have to know how to spot you when we come to Austraila!

Here's an idea, how about a picture with you and the rest of the Aussie Salseras? I know that SD, youngsta, Boriken and myself would love to see one! :D

Hopefully more will follow now that I've taken the plunge. Pygmalion what's up with your photo? Got lost in the mail?

As much as I've seen you flirt, I'm surprised you never had a picture up! Of course, there's guys like Neo with 500 pictures of his cats and dogs, but he's a ham so what do you expect.

No worries mate! We'll get it figured out, there's a lot of tech heads around DF.

Really? I'm curious now....:D

I know how to say a few simple compliments...but I know you dislike pinyin so I won't write them here. I tried them out on my Mandarin tutors, and one of them said "hey you're flirting with me!", well I had to make sure I was saying them right. :P

Oh...and then there's the whole tofu thing...I made the mistake of telling another Mandarin speaking girl how much I enjoyed Tofu...not knowing it was a slang term for something else! Yipes!

After looking at the post NeoDevin made in the Photo Album, I thought I would quote and repost, as posts in the Photo Album are often overlooked:

Ok, here's what each one is for:

Ribbons: The short ones were just for shoing up to two competitions. The large red ones are Second place at a competition called "Showstopper National Talent Competition", the left one was for a jazz group dance to the song "Mr. Cool" in 1992, the right one was for a tap group dance to the song "Why do Fools Fall in Love", in 1993.

Certificates, left to right, top to bottom.
With the little plaque: for completing upper grade one ballet, 1994.
Next: Amateur Ballet, 1991
Middle right: doesn't say what it's for, just for dance, and bottom right was for a jazz group dance in 1991.

Ok, on to the medals, starting at the top and working my way down.

ADF (Alberta Dance Festival), the ones with the little picture of a shield on them:
Gold:
Jazz Group: "Mr. Cool", 1992
Tap Group: "No Business Like Show Business", 1994
Tap Group: "Why do Fools Fall in Love", 1993

Silver:
Ukrainian Groups: 1993, 1994, don't have the song titles
Tap Group: "No Business Like Show Business", 1994
Tap Group: "Ships Ahoy", 1992
Jazz Group: "Think", 1994

Bronze:
Jazz Group: "Little Shop of Horrors", 1993

The ones right below those, the middle one is a bronze for a Ukrainianian group dance I did in 1994, the rest are from an Edmonton Talent Show.
Left to right:
Gold, Tap Solo, "Wipeout" 1994
Silver, Tap Group, "Why do Fools Fall in Love", 1993
Bronze, Jazz Group, "Little Shop of Horrors", 1993
Bronze, Ukrainian Solo (don't have song title), 1993

The ones off to the right are from the same show as the last bunch, and are all silvers:
Jazz Group, "Mr. Cool", 1992
Tap Group, "Ships Ahoy", 1992
Tap Group, "He Kissed Me", 1991

At the bottom, the left hand one (blue) was for a show called "Dance Power". Apparently it was a really poorly run show, run from the states. Anyways, that one was a bronze for a Jazz Group Dance to "Think" in 1994. The rest are from a yearly local competition called "Dancin' From the Heart". Left to Right:

Bronze, Tap Group, "No Business Like Show Business", 1994
Bronze, Ukrainian Group, 1993
Silver, Ukrainian Solo, 1993
Silver, Ukrainian Group, 1994
Gold, Tap Group, "Why do Fools Fall in Love", 1993

I shoot a Cannon EOS A2 with a VG10 grip and a bracket mounted Cannon 540EZ flash. To keep up with the speed of action I've found the power for my flash is crucial, so I now use a Quantum Turbo battery pack and Quantum 1 battery back, in tandem, to power the flash head.

Looking good SD. You seem to like the colour purple though
 Yeah, I was sure I'd get a comment on that!

This was actually just happenstance on my part... Janelle made her dress and chose the purple fringes. Aside from the the Halloween pimp costume, that shirt is the *only* other purple thing in my entire wardrobe... but it matched her dress, so what the heck, right?

Pacion

a) what do you call the other "purple" items in your wardrobe? lilac
b) did Janelle know about your purple shirt
c) as it female, that beats having to dye your partner's white shirt to a colour that matches your dress

Incidentally, in the "colour scheme" of things, purple is the colour of Kings  There is a "new age" meaning, in reference to auras but I will have to google it as I don't remember just now :)

Purple is usually thought to be the color of the brow chakra, ie the energy of the mind and mystical thought.

a) Smart @$$!
b) No, she didn't. She just chose what she wanted to do to make a new dress... after I saw the fringe I thought that that particular shirt might work, but wasn't sure. She only finished putting the dress together the night before, so I just brought that shirt along with a couple of other options along with me. We solicited feedback from a few people there, and everyone thought it worked well...

b) No, she didn't.

Gosh! That was lucky!

c)

Yes, I was doing an intercolleage competition years ago. My teacher lent us the dresses (luckily they fit!) but the guys didn't have matching shirts. My teacher was as chauvinist as one can get, so the girls had the task of buying dye AND dying the white shirts the guys provided us with, to match our dresses. Mine was electric blue with black and silver trimmings. The second attempt worked   (For some strange reason, he didn't want the guys wearing black shirts, which would have been the easiest solution  ) But, at least I had a chance to rummage around the store and found some electric blue, black and silver ribbon to wear in my hair

Nope, no particular angle. I know what each one represents to me, but I was there to take them so have entire contexts in mind when I look at each one, something most of my readers will not... so I'm more just curious what images others (i.e. you) find moving and why.

No, no selections yet. For one thing, only three of you have actually provided any feedback so far... but, to you three THANKS!!! [HUGE thanks!]

Beyond this, however, I actually have literally thousands of photos in my files here... only the smallest fraction of which I've had scanned and have available to post. Regarding dance, oh yeah!! Just tell them this is the way pros do it, everyone feels uncomfortable at first... :)

It's really funny sometimes, when I'm in a good mood. I dance with one person a merengue/bachata and they glue themselves to me, so I can barely move, even though that's not my preference. (There's full contact dancing and full-body hanging on.) Then I dance merengue/bachata with someone else and they refuse to get closer then one foot (bad experience probably?).

Anyway this thread is supposed to be on photos, remember?

SD: I am curious...how many pictures do you typically take at a comp, compared to how many you feel are quality?

SDsalsaguy
07-12-2004, 11:30 PM
Hmmm, interesting question DP... and probably depends on what you consider as quality too...

I can't say that there's a set amount I shoot at a comp since those can vary from one day, fairly low key events up through major dance festivals such as Blackpool and the GOC with literally thousands of dancers.

One possibly interesting side-point is that I find that the dancers' levels makes a tremendous difference as well. One of the very notable things I find with most of the highest-level competitors is how few shots I need to discard because of a bad line, distorted facial expression, or other such dancer-generated elements. For the most part I'd say that out of every role I shoot (36 exposures), about 20 shots are OK -- meaning no one got in the way, the flash had sufficiently recharged, and I managed to zoom in/out and focus well enough. I'd say about 10 of those are really nice, clean shots with good lines and expressions, 2-3 of which I'll really like.

Mind, all of this is an average that highly depends on floor size, crowd density, lighting conditions, number of dancers on the floor per round, and, as mentioned, the dancers' levels.

[Edited for typos, etc.]

DancePoet
07-12-2004, 11:46 PM
I can see how skill level would make a big difference. And I can see how the other things you mention in your last sentence would also effect your efforts. Interesting numbers to hear anyway, and better understand what your doing as a result. Thanks!

In honor of a couple of threads up in the Ballroom forum I added a bunch of photos of Chris & Hazel -- the reigning world pro ballroom champions -- to the Ballroom Album late last night.

Added one photo of me dancing; one of the two tangueras who honored me with their company dancing that same night; plus one of moi acting silly at work, at the Fine Arts Library, Cornell. :)

Must take photos every night until I get some really good ones! Last night I realized that I wasn't clearing the memory of my digital camera often enough, and so I had to stop taking photos and manually delete some. :( From now on I am wiping out the memory the day after every dance.

Another small contribution to the photo album...

I know I love salsa, and sometimes, I just feel like salsa loves me too

It's all about the flash!

Seriously though, when I first started trying to snap ballroom photos (a little over two years ago), I didn't get close to what I do now. Obviously the biggest difference has been my learning my craft but, beyond that, upgrading my flash helped a lot. Obviously the flash doesn't compose or take the pictures, but having a powerful flash with a quick recycle lets me shoot faster without missing too many shots. If there's something in front of me I can get it and have a full flash recharge pronto and, if there's something further away, the flash is still powerful enough to reach it.

I take the shots – and ultimately could take the same ones with lesser equipment – but having better tools certainly does make it faster and easier to capture what I'm trying to.

[P.S. We could always talk about this more in the Photo Forums (http://www.thephotoforums.com/)... hint, hint, hint! ]

SD has lots of practice I get! performance was pretty bad on my part. Not sure why but I was all over the place. :( I couldn't hear the music etc etc. I'm hoping to redeem myself tonight! I'm hopeful. The first time I feel that I do well and it is taped I will share the video, but not sure when that will be.

I just posted a photo of myself, taken on Christmas, in the member galleries. I've been trying to make it my avatar, but I don't have the right software to shrink it down small enough. Can anyone help me?

A link to some random photos from my group's Saturday performances. I'm the guy in the bright red shirt whith white flowers. Unfortunately not great shots as I was too worn out to get the time to make someoen take photos of me.. :? Also was rudely awaken from sleep and couldn't find my normal glasses - hence the shades.

If you posted something I don't see it yet. I don't know if there is a delay - my impressin was that it was almost instantaneous since I could view it from the general page and not just my own. Hopefully someone that knows the answer willbe by soon!

Yeah, I posted a couple of my photos from OSB. I can see them myself if I go to "My Photos", but they must be still in some sort of limbo.
