I noticed last night that both Charlotte and Kelly wore really high open toe shoes, that didn't have what I consider to be the dreaded and dangerous "pencil" heel. :?
Does anyone know who makes ladies shoes like that? I could use some.
Thanks.

International, Supadance and Freed of London are the major makers iof ballroom shoes and they all offer shoes with a "flair" heel.
i'm still trying to figure out the shoe bits - what exactly is "flared" (sp?) heel?? Is it used for latin or standard or both?? I noticed that standard shoes tend to have bigger heels and are lower (2" max??)

A flared heel is not like a typical high heel.
This is regular: http://www.atldanceworld.com/images/MELX_h.jpg
This is flared: http://www.dancedresser.net/images/shoes/ids/LauraTan.jpg
You can find a flared heel on some court shoes IIRC. But they are few and far between. Most places you can find a court shoes with as much as a 3" heel. But 2.5" seems to be the norm. I wear 2" heels because hubby is not much taller than me and 2.5 or 3" would make me taller than him.

thanks, DancingMommy, mine's 2.5" with flared heel - eventhough it measures 3" from top to bottom  - i had problem balancing on the heels that's why i was wondering whether or not they're for latin only.

I've been told that heels are measured from the inside (i.e, the part where the heel meets the sole under the foot), not from the back where the heel attaches tot he rest of the shoe.
You can get all kinds of heels on all kinds of dance shoes, you just have to check the various brands. Dance Naturals heels are thicker than other brands' slim heels, but aren't flared. Diamant makes something called the "Latino Heel," which is even thicker than the Dance Naturals heel. International makes the "IDS" heel, which is flared, and of course Supadance sells shows wit "flare" heels. You can get these in various heights, depending on brand and style. I've been able to get flared heels on pretty much any shoe in existance as a special order.
i find that the height of heels varies from brand to brand - i have international and the heel height indeed is measured from the inside of the heel. My other pair, i believe is very fine (?) - the heel height was 2", but i measured from the outside of the heel - the heels were also thicker and not flared, which made balancing a lot easier. Too bad the brand just doesn't fit me very well.

I found a shoe company called Dance Naturals. Specifically the shoe is named Dance Natural Art 409.
I'm afraid I don't know how to post pictures, but the shoes are exactly what I was talking about. Could someone help with that?
I've got the picture saved on my computer, if that helps.
Thanks to everyone for their responses.
Now I will be 5' 3 on the dancefloor! :D :D :D

I could really use a pair like the flesh colored court shoe with the arch strap.
What MAKES those darned shoes "flop" on your heels? I'd love to be able to fiddle around WITHOUT the strap, but I need that thing stuck on my hoof good and proper.

I have narrow heels so this is a constant problem for me. I just go to Walgreen's and buy heel-grip inserts. They stick to the inside of your shoe and prevent the heel from slipping out. Plus, they give you a little extra padding which I appreciate since I sometimes have trouble with court shoes rubbing the skin off my heels.

Hm. I'll have to find some of those.
I thought I was brilliant yesterday- I got the heel gel inserts, they worked well (in my sandaly strappy ones), but glued small bits of formed suede onto the heels. For three whole minutes, they worked... *sniffle*
I hate thumping and clicking and hoofing around Danielle's pretty floor...

Get a pair that fits properly. If they fit correctly, then you shouldn't have that problem unless ou hav really skinny heels. :)

Here are the shoes from Dancing Naturals I wrote about earlier.

There are more shoes availble but these 2 are the lowest price.
wow, absolutely beautiful!!!
Except they look more like 3" heels - i'd probably fall flat on my face if i try to walk in them.....never mind dancing.....

The shoes are availble at Danceshopper.
www.danceshopper.com
They may be available elsewhere, but this is the only place I've found so far.
EDIT: It looks like US pricing to me. But I'm short, so I will probably save up and get the cheap pair.
actually, i'm wondering if anyone would wear those for standard/smooth? I've often heard the arguement that standard/smooth shoes are closed toed and they seem to be lower in heels as well. But hey, these are absolutely beautiful!!!
P.S. US 179 is pretty high - i can get the same pair for about 150CDN (plus tax, of course!)

There is a modern variation of this shoe as well -- it has the same glittery heel, but is closed toe. I'm still trying to overcome the temptation to buy a pair. They're so pretty, but so expensive. It might be worth it if they were the best shoes ever, but what are the chances of that?
do you mind showing me a link? I"m still trying to figure out (and have plenty of trouble) distinguishing between latin & modern shoes..... frankly, i like the latin styles, but the heels are always quite slim....

I agree, nice pic! You guys are very photogenic and is it just me, or does your partner resemble Chris O'Donnell?
wyllo - your avatar's nice too - i love seeing ladies in white ballgowns!!!
i think one of the reasons why modern shoes are more stable is b/c the heels are lower and thicker....
btw, you ladies have extremely nice hair - is that comp hair or just good genes  ??

I can't find tasche anywhere, speaking of buying shoes! I pm'ed, emailed, and checked the (closed) ebay store. To top it off, that darned J thinks that because I get new shoes, HE needs 'em too. Well, he can buy his OWN this time- I have many shiny things I desperately need with my money- oh, and that huge marzipan log I found at World Market.

As much as tasche was an invaluable memnber of the DF community and, as much as I wish her only well, even if you could track her down I would not recomend buying shoes from her at this time. On my recomendation my ex orderes a pair of shoes from her and, after sending a money order (seperate issue), stuill had not received her shoes more then six months later! :x

I can get the same kind of shoes (I'm a distributor for VF shoes) but I don't have any inventory and my minimum first order is $350 worth of shoes. Since I don't need that many pairs of shoes, I have to wait a while until I get that much money plus the $7 each shipping to get my stock up. Well, that and the place to put said shoes and keep the kiddies out of them. Who'd have thought that little girls would like mommy's dance shoes better than toys? WAAAAAAAAAAAH!

I got the metal heel version of the latin Dance Naturals that got posted on the first page. The heel is 3" high, but it is placed further into the arch than I'm used to. As a result, they feel much more stable than any other high heel shoes I've ever worn, but the heel also feels *way* higher than my other 3" heels. They are really beautiful and otherwise comfortable, but my feet aren't strong enough to actually do footwork when propped up that high.

As you bring your foot back you should be pushing the toe of your foot back on the floor to maintain contact and control of your body flight. Then you roll onto the foot and lastly off the heel. A high heel restricts your movement with this type of foot action, and an open toe leads to broken toe nails (and sometimes toes), slivers in the the feet, and bruised or cut toes if stepped on (and torn nylons if wearing them). :?

did you notice Charlotte's stoned burgundy heels with her burgundy latin costume? Kinda pretty, kinda *******ing, after tan, tan, tan.
Don't get me wrong, I love the leg line with tan shoes, especially in Latin.

Those are quotes from classic movies that have become part of the culture, to the point where some people use the expressions without even knowing where they come from. And there are hundreds more. For example, "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn," is another that has a paraphrased DF thread named after it right now. If you don't watch movies, you're missing a lot, IMO.

Just for the record,. (Why do I keep saying that today? ) I agree that's the complete and correct movie line. But that's not the expression that people use. So it looks like that quote has grown to become part of the popular culture, which is my point exactly. If you don't watch movies, you're missing a lot. 8)
