I'll be there. What's the competition like in Novice and PreChamp?... I can't remember. Is anybody planning on going to the dinner they hold Saturday night? It's usually a snooze but at least it's "free" food.
Katarzyna, do you think you could bring any dresses that you're selling down to SRC with you? My partner is looking to buy another dress.
Katarzyna
09-23-2005, 01:53 PM
I can bring all the dresses. Was planning to anyway to see if I can sell them there :)
With the entries or 150 per person  , the food better be free!!!

Great, thanks Katarzyna. I figured you probably would, but I just wanted to make sure.
I know there are a few couples considering doing both competitions.

As far as I could see, there were no Am events at Hotlanta.. When I looked at their schedule, it included only pro-am events...
ACtenDance
09-23-2005, 03:42 PM
I'm not sure by looking myself, but I'll ask the person I know that said he'd be competing in both while I'm at the studio tonight. I can't stand to look at the hotlanta website myself, ick... of course he might just be dancing pro-am with Olga. Either way, I'll try to get some clarification.

It would be great to do both since we already paying to fly there...

I didn't see Phillipe at the studio, so I looked at the hotlanta website. Amateur open events are listed in the schedule now for Friday and Saturday nights, and there is an amateur entry form.

Just got back from SRC. It was great seeing Katarzyna dancing. I didn't realize that I had been dancing on the same floor in the same events as her only two years ago... wow! Most surprising was the absense of Russ and Katusha Wilder dancing at SRC, but they were competing at Hotlanta I think. As usual, the champ events were not well attended, but we were all surprised to see Louis van Amstel show up to watch two of his students dance uncontested in the champ latin event.

How was the champ standard? How many couples finally came to dance?

And, I'm back.
I caught the tail end of Hotlanta...WAH. First professional competition I've seen. Definitely worth the spectator ticket price.
Didn't place in anything in Bronze Latin @ SRC...my partner went basketcase on me and started freezing up on the floor. I'm a bit worried about her, because I don't think she has enough confidence in herself to be an effective dance partner (disregarding anxiety attacks and such).

Well Katarzyna and her partner danced in it along with an older couple from the UK... not well attended in the A category. Now if you're looking for competition in Champ Senior I and above, this was the competition to be at.
The world class event was a treat with Andrea Faraci and Erica Ridgeway showing up! Did anyone catch the results for the World Class Rhythm?

I bet you would have fit through the little crack in the wall in the room where the practice floor was. I tried... couldn't fit...

We actually danced at both events - was interesting, especially Saturday evening, when we danced Smooth at Hotlanta first, then ran over to SRC and danced the Rhythm and Smooth World Class events there.
Hotlanta didn't have many amateur couples, which is a pity - it was a nice event. SRC Smooth, Rhythm and 9-dance were decently attended aduring the day and had great quality; not much presence in the evening though. I think many people found the whole World Class thing quite confusing...
And yes, the $ 150 for SRC was a bit steep; apparently it was because of the $ 10,000 floor rental fee (alone) - the venue was quite expensive to rent.

There was a small opening in the wall between the practice room and the balcony seating... in other words, entrance to the comp without the entrance fee

It looked like they were there Saturday afternoon to support a PreChamp Standard couple that they were helping/coaching (???). Hehe, that reminds me... my partner and I won the PreChamp Tango by doing one side of gold tango, then the remainder of the song doing bronze tango (still don't have an open tango or foxtrot). I still can't believe we somehow did that well.

We must erradicate this byzantine practice of hiring qualified judges!

Good Job! Glad to know that there are judges out there looking at the quality of the execution above the complicated coreography . . . I'm sure your bronze was perfectly elegant! Congrats!

I didn't know any of the judges for the SRC either.
It was our first time competeing there. We did pretty well although many people were surprised with one of the outcomes. We use it as a boost to practice harder and get better. You should never take a placement negatively, just use it to grow.

the McCallas, Kim Smith, Esther Don, Wayne Crowder, Robin Stockdale to name the ones that I remember. A majority of the judging panel have impressive ISTD, among other, credentials.

Have you danced with a drunk partner, not good. Imagine a nervous drunk partner, even worse. Maybe give her a shot of something to get her calm, don't let her watch other people warm-up or compete. This is something she will have to overcome. Also try practicing in front of lots of people. Try to have her focus only on you and forget the rest of the people around (this should happen anyways).
Good luck

Surely they offer all of the rhythm dances, at least at some level?

Nope, they only have mambo as a seperate event. What they have for rhythm is open amateur rhythm multi-dance and it's 4 dances.
