    1. Do you dance, Latin or Ballroom or Both?

Both in group classes and socially, ballroom only in private lessons. Oh, and paso, just 'cause. International style for both though.

    2. Do you compete? If yes, in what level and category?

About to for the first time, pro/am silver in three weeks. Nervous!

    3. Which is your favourite dance in Ballroom?

Now international foxtrot, was viennese, which remains a close second.

    4. Which is your favourite dance in Latin?

    Rumba and paso doble.

    5. Which is your weakest dance?

Latin: Samba, no question. Ballroom: Quickstep

    6. What brand and model is your ballroom/latin shoe?

Ballroom, Supadance 1021, Latin, Very Fine Salsera

    7. Who is your favourite dancer (idol/inspiration)?

Anna Mikhed and Karen Hilton! I like watching Yulia too.

    8. For how many years have you been dancing Latin/Ballroom?

    Almost two.

    9. Why did you start dancing Latin/Ballroom?

Because I always wanted to and finally had the time and opportunity once I finished school and had a job to pay for lessons. I always wanted to do ballet as a child and never got to, so this was kind of to make up for that. I love music too, and I see dance as kind of like playing another instrument besides piano.

    10. What is your best asset when comes to dancing latin/ballroom and what is your biggest problem that you are working with?

Biggest assets are being very analytical and good at figuring out conceptually what needs to happen in my dancing, and as a result I get more out of my lessons and seem to have to practice less to get the same results as some, also, I have a music background and good sense of rhythm and musicality pretty naturally because of it, and people tell me I was built to be a standard dancer; I guess I have the body type for it, more or less. :)

ON the flip side, I have a tough time making the mind-body connection, often understanding perfectly what needs to happen but unable to make it happen because my body won't/can't do it. Although dance has helped a ton with this, I am still very self-conscious and shy, so Latin especially is a real challenge to make look uninhibited and authentic. I have horrible balance! I break my frame at the shoulder and I don't keep my neck straight; my current biggest frustration, because I usually can't feel it happening.

I was forced into it by Mum, one of the many things that I am grateful to her for.
    10. What is your best asset when comes to dancing Latin/Ballroom and what is your biggest problem that you are working with?
I think my best asset is that I have a natural rhythm in my body so I tend to do some nice actions even when I don't realise it. Sadly, that is also one of my biggest problem because it doesn't always mean that my shoulders or wherever it is that I am not supposed to move will stay there.

    10. What is your best asset when comes to dancing Latin/Ballroom and what is your biggest problem that you are working with?
Biggest asset: I pick up things really quickly, as long as I can see what you're doing, and you explain the technique. Plus I can handle the craziest syncopations.
Biggest problem: No Dancesport industry. No coach, no studio, no socials, no books. Just me, DP and the internet. But the going is good.

    1. Do you dance, Latin or Ballroom or Both?
    Both

    2. Do you compete? If yes, in what level and cathegory?
I've competed bronze and silver am-am in both, although we danced bronze routines in silver and danced there largely because we could. (Although we actually placed quite well.) I'm switching to pro-am for a while at least, and my pro wants me to start out with a bronze comp before we move on to silver. (Which I approve strongly of.)

    3. Which is your favourite dance in Ballroom?
This changes at irregular intervals. I think tango may actually top the list currently, which sounds really odd to me. This is not a ... traditional choice for me.

    4. Which is your favourite dance in Latin?
I think it might be cha-cha right now, although my rumba is certainly better.

    5. Which is your weakest dance?
Of the dances I know at all - west coast. Of the dances I actually care about - the last month or so has made it clear to me that the answer is actually waltz. This is kind of funny as if I'd answered this a couple of months ago, I would have put it as one of my better dances. The consensus of the judges in Baton Rouge was quite clear though, and my lessons over the same timeframe have left me seeing their point.

    6. What brand and model is your ballroom/latin shoe?
Standard - IDS Tangos, Latin - I'm honestly not 100% sure. They're hand-me-downs from my local championship-level Russian who happens to be almost exactly the same size as I am.

    7. Who is your favourite dancer (idol/inspiration)?
Naming my pro instructor would be cheating, right? :)

    8. For how many years have you been dancing Latin/Ballroom?
About three and a half. Although I'm always quick to point out that there were large swathes of that that I had irregular to nonexistant intruction. I've probably had not quite a year and a half of reasonably consistent, quality instruction.

    9. Why did you start dancing Latin/Ballroom?
I realized that I was spending my entire life either at home or at work. Deciding that I needed to get out more, I opened up the weekend insert in my local paper, and saw a writeup on an event one of the local studios was having. "Hmm," I thought to myself. "That might work, I should probably go to that." It's always struck me as a fine example of how the smallest things can change one's life, as I don't expect I ever would have wound up dancing had I picked up that paper a week earlier or a week later.

    10. What is your best asset when comes to dancing latinballroom and what is your biggest problem that you are working with?
I'd say my single best asset is my sheer, bullheaded stubborness. The universal consensus among the instructors I've worked with seems to be that my frame is my biggest issue. My pro instructor has told me quite explicitly that it's the one thing that's really holding me back right now. But ... I'll get it. See: asset.

No, I do social dancing only.

    3. Which is your favourite dance in Ballroom?

    Two favorites: tango and waltz.

    4. Which is your favourite dance in Latin?

    Rumba

    7. Who is your favourite dancer (inspiration)?

I really don't have a favorite dancer at the moment. I admire all the ladies and gentlemen who are enjoying themselves on the dance floor with clearly more confidence than I feel :applause:

    8. For how many years have you been dancing Latin/Ballroom?

    Since June 2010.

J'adore how I feel when I'm dancing. I could put any number of all very good reasons, but it boils down to that one, simple sentence.

    10. What is your best asset when comes to dancing Latin/ballroom and what is your biggest problem that you are working with?

I'm told that I have a marvelous sense of rhthym.

    1. Do you dance, Latin or Ballroom or Both?
Both. Plus American Rhythm and Smooth. But I barely dance Standard at all these days; mostly just Rhythm, Smooth, and Latin.

    2. Do you compete? If yes, in what level and category?
I do compete; I used to dance collegiate amateur but now I am dipping my toes into the terrifying world of pro comps. I am not ready to do Pro Rising Star Smooth or Latin yet, but that's the goal. Still not sure whether or not I want to compete Rhythm.

    3. Which is your favorite dance in ballroom?
    Viennese.

    4. Which is your favorite dance in Latin?
    Paso.

    5. Which is your weakest dance?
Samba. My samba action, it turns out, was all kinds of wrong; I was doing some bizarre stuff that I guess I had made up and assumed was samba? No. It was not. So now I am rebuilding my technique from the ground up which is really a drag but it's starting to stick. So that's satisfying.

    6. What brand and model is your ballroom/latin shoe?
Ballroom/Smooth - some random Very Fine court shoe that is not the greatest. Latin - Ray Rose Blizzard.

    7. Who is your favorite dancer (inspiration)?
Yuliaaaaaaaaaaaa! Funny story about cheering Yulia's name - at a recent comp, she and Ricardo came out for the Latin finals and everybody was yelling for her - "Go Yulia! Yuliaaaa! Go Ricardo!" - it was a little discouraging for the rest of the field. Finally someone in the audience gave up trying to figure out who else was dancing and just yelled, "Go everybody!" I love that. Go everybody is right!

    8. For how many years have you been dancing Latin/Ballroom?
Um. I guess ten or eleven? But really I danced seriously for four years, took about four years off to go to graduate school and do other non-dance things, and then got back to real dancing two years ago. So total dance time, ten years; total serious actual dancing on a weekly basis or more dance time, about six years.

    9. Why did you start dancing Latin/Ballroom?
I honestly don't know. My first week of college I went to one of those 'try out our ballroom dance club' things (I also went to fencing, wine-tasting, ultimate frisbee, and a ton of other random stuff). There were about ten thousand girls and three guys. Nobody wanted to dance with me. By all accounts it should have been a total disaster but somehow I had a lot of fun anyway. I kept going and pretty soon a lot of people wandered away (ultimate frisbee, I guess - or midterms!) and by the end of that year I was competing. By the end of the next year I was running our team.

    10. What is your best asset when it comes to dancing Ballroom/Latin and what is your biggest problem?

Best asset - styling and performance. I am good at dancing the crap out of something and making it look entertaining even if my technique is not perfect. I am not afraid to go big. (Consequently, I fall down a fair amount, but what are you going to do.) Biggest problem - alignment. I have whacked-out knees and for years I had terrible alignment which resulted in bad technique and unnecessary stress and damage to my body. So I am rebuilding it all and making it right. It's so hard, and frequently painful, but I keep reminding myself that I want to dance for the rest of my life, and I need my body to hold out. If I get lazy and misaligned, that's never going to happen.

  18. Nice idea for a thread!

    1. Do you dance, Latin or Ballroom or Both?
    Both

    2. Do you compete? If yes, in what level and cathegory?
    No, social dancing

    3. Which is your favourite dance in Ballroom?
    Tango

    4. Which is your favourite dance in Latin?
    Samba

    5. Which is your weakest dance?
    Viennese Waltz

    6. What brand and model is your ballroom/latin shoe?
    Ray Rose Drizzles

    7. Who is your favourite dancer (idol/inspiration)?
That's hard - I could watch Yulia's showdances all day, but I look to the professionals on Strictly Come Dancing for inspiration in terms of choreography a social dancer could actually use. Lilia Kopylova and Flavia Cacace are both fabulous pros

    8. For how many years have you been dancing Latin/Ballroom?
    5.5

    9. Why did you start dancing Latin/Ballroom?
I had done ballet and tap in my youth, then it all got pushed out of the picture when I went through university/settling into my early career. I was just at the point when I was feeling like I wanted to take up some form of dancing again, but I wasn't sure what, then Strictly came on our screens, and I was sold! Took a couple of years begging my (then) boyfriend, and he caved in during the run up to our wedding.

    10. What is your best asset when comes to dancing latinballroom and what is your biggest problem that you are working with?
I do have a natural sense of rhythm, so I pick up the nature of a dance very quickly. My problem area is balance. I have recently got the hang of spotting, but I find this isn't much help if you're not executing a full 360.

    1. Do you dance, Latin or Ballroom or Both?
I used to do both, but am now focusing on Standard

    2. Do you compete? If yes, in what level and cathegory?
I do, I dance amateur collegiate competitions silver currently

    3. Which is your favourite dance in Ballroom?
It's a toss up between quickstep and waltz. I love a nice energetic quickstep, but find that the waltzes have more emotion and more variety of emotion.

    4. Which is your favourite dance in Latin?
    PASO DOBLE! Woooo!

    5. Which is your weakest dance?
Foxtrot. I didn't start learning foxtrot until I was dancing for a year already and so it's having a hard time catching up.

    6. What brand and model is your ballroom/latin shoe?
Ballroom: Freed (I think it's a harmony, I don't really know because I bought it from a store before I paid much attention)
    Latin: Supadance 1403
Practice (the ones I really wear the most): Supadance 1026

    7. Who is your favourite dancer (idol/inspiration)?
I love Yulia. Even though I don't compete latin anymore, I find her mesmorizing.

    8. For how many years have you been dancing Latin/Ballroom?
I'll be starting my third year in September.

    9. Why did you start dancing Latin/Ballroom?
It was a combination of the movie Take the Lead and a well timed list serve announcement from the college ballroom team.

    10. What is your best asset when comes to dancing latinballroom and what is your biggest problem that you are working with?
My biggest asset is years of orchestra/chorus so I can find the beat to any song within seconds and stay on it.The biggest problem I am working on is finding a partner who wants to move as quickly as I do.

    1. Do you dance, Latin or Ballroom or Both?
I started out with Tango and Waltz but lately my instructor insists on Latin.

    2. Do you compete? If yes, in what level and cathegory?
I do compete but only in my dreams. I wish I will one day, 10 years from now....

    3. Which is your favourite dance in Ballroom?
I guess it's tango because I've been having problems with waltz lately. Otherwise, I'd have chosen both.

    4. Which is your favourite dance in Latin?
    RRRRRumba!!!!!!

    5. Which is your weakest dance?
Chachacha...., though I love it. I'm really not good at Samba, but I haven't been taking any samba lessons, so I've got many excuses there.

    6. What brand and model is your ballroom/latin shoe?
Handmade, made on order because I have a spine problem.

    7. Who is your favourite dancer (idol/inspiration)?
My inspiration has to be my teacher. Idols I have many, but the one who initiated me in dance and radically changed my life is my teacher.

    8. For how many years have you been dancing Latin/Ballroom?
It's only been a few months. I started group classes last October but back then I was mainly observing the class instead of participating. I started dancing when I lost weight in January.I've been taking private lessons for the last couple of months.

    9. Why did you start dancing Latin/Ballroom?
To change my life. I was more or less a criple before that. I have been struggling with a herniated disc for the last 7 years. I managed to avoid the wheelchair and the operation so far and hope to keep it that way.

    10. What is your best asset when comes to dancing latinballroom and what is your biggest problem that you are working with?
My fear is my asset. Then again, my fear is my biggest problem as well. My deepest fear is one day I might stop dancing either for medical or financial reasons. This thought makes me dance more and more now that I still can.
On the other hand, the fear that I suck as a dancer makes me dance offbeat and loose my concentration. I get so frustrated I even freeze up sometimes.
Another asset I have is DF. When I found DF I found a place to go to when I need a source of inspiration!
