Lol! It's a fun time in a big scene! You'd enjoy it. (There are lots of jobs here from what I hear, although a lot have to do with the government. Odd, though - even though you need to be a US citizen for those government jobs, I think I have met more foreign citizens working here than in other states in the US.)

So does this mean that if I show you a good time over here, you'd do the same for me in Scandanavia? If so, then I guess it's time to expand "The Plan".

Lisbon salsa scene here I come:

Monday - Bar "O Francês", at Av. 24 de Julho. It's the only place to dance on monday.
Tuesday - Club Hawaii, Docas. It's terribly crowded, but again, the only venue available.
Wednesday - great night at Barrio Latino, the city's best club (at Parque das Nações).
Thursday - Club "Sabor a Brasil", Parque das Nações. Also the only venue, great place, but not many salseros turn up...
Friday and Saturday - Barrio Latino (aforementioned)

I can help you to find nice salsa night clubs even if I'm unable to go oversea. (It may take some time...) Just call me ....I'm sorry... pm me :) .

Its funny with these on-line-maps. I found one for my home county -
    http://www.expedia.com/pub/agent.dll?qscr=mrdt&ID=3XNsF.&CenP=57.712619,11.996426&Lang=WLD0409&Alti=500&Size=296,240&Offs=0,333.333333&MapS=0&Pins=|3078|

You see the top of Denmark to the left and Gothenburg where all the clubs are. And Uddevalla where we have had our salsa weekends - a big salsa community considering the size of the town  . There is a small but growing salsa community at Stenungsund as well, 50 km north of Gothenburg. The salsa weekend will move here in March (look at the Annual Salsa Congresses & Events ).

I almost forgot - Krokstrandsfestivalen MAN MUST DANCE. A worldmusic festival is held 28-30 Juli 2005 close to the Norwegian border (the yellow ribbon on the map). The festival is on the beach of the fjord that is the natural border between Sweden and Norway. The landscape almost takes your breath away.
(I must post this festival at the Ads&News  There is usually plenty of salsa and karribean music. Salsa classes as well)

Hello from Winnipeg Manitoba! Our salsa community in Winnipeg is fairly young, but we have a great club called the Empire Cabaret in the downtown area where we have latin nights each Friday and Saturday. It's a wicked club, very elegant, and there's 3 levels each playing different kind of music. Our latin dance addicts are on the second level. Music played is mostly salsa, with some cumbia, merengue, and bachata. If any of you stop by Winnipeg for the weekend come and dance with us! Our style is very similar since we are a small group and we learn from each other. Watching visiting dancers is always so refreshing.

Hi. How is the nightlife there? My brother and his family moved there a few years ago and now my niece moved there with them. I told her there was some Latin NightLife and she heard some utter, but did not get all the info. They live in Cumming.

    Stuck On Salsa event 1/1/2005

    From www.djjoserodriguez.com

"Start your year off with a Salsa Bang as StuckOnSalsa, in association with Eileen Torres, presents "The Resolution Jam"...the salsa continues at Zanzibar on the Waterfront Saturday January 1, 2004 on the lower level from 10pm until 4am. Two of the 3 DJs confirmed are Tony Nardolillo and DJ Jose Rodriguez from Philly. There will be no commercial interruptions, no contests, no performances, we are starting the year off with a straight-up 6 hour salsa jam. There will be no events before this one so there will be no waiting or being shifted around until the room is ready, it will be ready at 10pm. We are also taking some chairs and tables out so there will be plenty of room to dance this time around. There will be light fare available for purchase until 3am and drink specials to be announced. "

    Hope this helps.

Here's my update on the Melbourne scene, as I've had a couple of international queries I thought I'd post the latest info here  .

Wed - Lotus (R&B/Salsa) still The onlt place to go, eventhough the amount of salsa is getting smaller  . The door opens at 9pm, and they start charging ($5) at 10pm. They play salsa 9-12, and there's a class on 9.30-10.30. Serious salseros turn up early to get their fix (while there's room, and salsa music). afterwards it's a mixture of reggaeton, merengue, latin pop/house, R&B and retro, with a few salsa thrown in. It gets VERY crowded.

Thur - Alumbra (new salsa band playing classica/romantica/timba & DJ) is still going. It's a nice place while the weather is nice & we can dance outside. Though it's getting too crowded with too many non-dancers or traffic hazards :x .
Loft is a new place with a salsa dura band & DJ. It has a decent dance floor. I'm yet to check it out.

Fri - Park Hyatt (not to be confused with Grand Hyatt) is where most of the action is, now that they've got a son band
Gardenias is still good, but quieter.
Viva has also got a band on, but I'm not sure who goes there, as most people who go there Sat would be at Park Hyatt on Fri.
Copa is still ok on a Friday night, I think.

Sat - Viva (level 1 at the old Stage. Salsa dura band/DJ) is usually where all the dancers go. Ther band & floor is great.
Gardenias is becoming a seriously good alternative on Sat, with cheaper cover charge, and more down-to-earth atmosphere.
Copa is the same  .
I believe there is a new place (with a good band) on Lygon st, where the latinoes go. Some old local legends (my salsa mentor/ex included; for those of you who missed out on his prime days, now is the chance to see him in action) have got together for it. I am yet to check it out.

Sun - Night Cat is still THE place to be 8) . What can I say...?
It's the last weeks for Salsa on the beach .... as it's getting cooler  .

Mon & Tue nights there are still only socials (sometimes with a band) after classes.......run by a couple of Cuban Casino schools. Mainly attended by beginner/intermediate students.

Scanning this thread, two things came to mind:

    1) If someone is collecting all this info in a list, it would be most useful if it was published somewhere. Salsarhythms, I see your post was in 2003 - are you still compiling a list, or have you published it somewhere already?

    2) On p2 of this list there were some posts on smoke-free venues... it would be great to have a "smoke indicator" on such a list - i.e. 0 = no smoking, 2 = smoking but airy venue so it doesn't bother, 10 = splutter, cough, put on foglights, smell like ashtray when you eventually stumble out into fresh air :D , with whatever grades inbetween...

Worst is when people smoke on the dance floor... I guess it's the same as running a marathon next to an overcongested highway!

(OK, while we're grading venues for smoke, we might as well grade them for (over)crowdedness, quality of music, willingness or snobishness of people to dance... hey, this could get out of hand!!)

Of course, I know every well the problem of listing venues - the list already gets outdated as you draw up the first few entries... but nonetheless, if you're traveling to an area you've never been or don't know anyone, it's great to have such a list as a starting point to do your investigation!

Here are some smoke indicators I know of:
Que Pasa, Cape Town (classes Tue, Thu; club Fri, Sat) - 4
    Bossa Nova, Cape Town (...) - 8 to 10
Buena Vista, Cape Town (restaurant & salsa Sun) - 6
Ealing Town Hall, London (classes & club Fri) - 0!!
Jongleurs, London (classes & club Wed) - 2
    Fiesta Havana, London (...) - 4
Sound, Bar Salsa, My Place, all London (...) - about 5 or 6
Monte Cristo, Paris - 8 (only been once)
La Coupole, Paris - 7 or 8 (only been once)

For me, my favorite place for Salsa dancing in LA are:

    1) Steven's Steak House (City of Commerce), Sunday Night-Lots of good dancers but the floor is a little too small ($5), excellent place for followers to find good dancers to practice.

    2) Granada (Alhambra), Saturday Night, Large floor but a little $$ ($15 but life music), friendly environment.
