If you don't care about privacy, that's up to you. I think it's reasonable for others to care about it, though.

For example, I think it would be nice if web sites like this one used https instead of http, so that PMs never crossed the network in the clear. I don't know whether phpbb supports that, but if it doesn't, they should fix that.

Edit: apparently PHPBB does support https:

Well, I do care, but see my posts #3 and #5 earlier in the thread. (Er, but only paragraphs 1 and 3 from the latter.)

I was about to say that I tend to agree with you about SSL for PMs, but I decided that's a red herring too. The forum supports a feature to forward PMs to email accounts, right? If one's recipient enables that feature, then one's PM to that recipient will travel the internet in the clear regardless of whether one transmits it to DF using SSL.

    1. The recipient doesn't have to enable that.

    2. Email generally travels the internet by SSL now, not in the clear.

I guess "internet search" may be inextricably entangled in issues with liberty, privacy, etc., etc. ...

On a technical note, I guess DDG amalgamates results from other search engines and knowledge bases. Here's what they have to say:

If they don't have access to their own data, it seems like they're at the mercy of others, to be able to provide their service. Is that viable in the long term?

Sounds kinda like a franchise the does the heavy lifting as far as recruiting and marketing... then the independent teachers come in and clean it up.

Which part do you think is the "heavy lifting" here?

And Bing spiders Google, while Google spiders Bing. I'm still using DDG and loving it.
