For those in NYC Thursday, June 8th ... One of the annual events for the big weekend:

TROPICAL NIGHT @ SOUTH STREET SEAPORT - Thursday, June 8th, 2006. 6:00 - 9:00 PM on Pier 17. An annual event leading into the weekend of the 116th Street Festival on Saturday and the Puerto Rican Day Parade on Sunday. There's no specific "dance floor", but spontaneous dancing takes place in various sections, some of which is On 2. The surface is wood planks of the pier. I'm told by the ladies that shoes should be smooth leather soled (no sticky rubber soles), and that the surface is pretty good for shines & spinning. Shoes should have somewhat thick heels, no thin spike heels (you too, fellas), because there are spaces between the planks of the pier. If you want to be assured of dancing On 2, you may wish to come with a partner or a group. Concerts are cancelled in case of rain. All the restaurants & bars of the Seaport are right nearby, so food, beverages and restrooms are readily available. For more info on other South Street Seaport music events, and on stores, restaurants, hours, maps, etc., see their web site at http://www.southstreetseaport.com .
