musicchica's thread on songs with places in their names made me think: Halloween is the next holiday when people may be having theme dances. Any ideas for songs for Halloween? Either actually about Halloween or with Halloween-related words like witch, devil, etc.?

Fun soundtracks with some Halloween-ish themes are Nighmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride. If I remember correctly, there are some good foxtrots and quicksteps. I think there's a waltz or two in there as well.

On Ballroom Passion CD there a cool quickstep called Grim Grinning Ghosts... I have no idea why I like this song so much, I just do!

What could you do to Gnarls Barkley's The Boogie Man? Am I hearing cha cha or is that just wishful thinking?

We usually also pull out any of the wacky songs we have too. Like Masochism Tango.

OK, important question...who does this Masochism Tango.

I don't need to know anything else about it to know I HAVE TO have it in my collection. (I'm assuming it's a danceable tango, but really I don't care.)

Very danceable as it's pretty much strict tempo. Absolutely hilarious too. :D

I can't wait to get home tonight and try and find it, thanks for the artist info.

Since it's strict tempo, I'm wondering if I could use it for AT. I've got a rep for having very strange music for lessons--'t'would be fun to throw that one in and see if I get a reaction from my teacher.

If you click on the My Music link under my avatar/picture, I just added a music entry for the Edward Scissorhands soundtrack... the opening titles has a really great Viennese.

    Listening to it now...

I think you could pull it off. Especially just for the giggle factor. ;)

Yeah, there's just way too much fun to be had with something like that. I think that if there's a lead who could pull off dancing AT to something odd, it would be my teacher. We've danced AT to some strange stuff--cha chas, sambas, wcs, hustle, non-danceable pop.

I'll have to preview it first, though. There was an awkward moment in my last lesson b/c I hadn't previewed all of my new songs. There we were, dancing away (to "Tango in Harlem"), and the music stops and the lead singer says--very clearly--"F*** YOU!" Hmmm...note to self: make sure music is entirely appropriate. Luckily we were in the back ballroom and by ourselves, so there was no one else around to be offended.

Another fun tango is Botox Tango by Cosy Sheridan. Not Halloween-ish, but very funny lyrics.

Hm...never heard it. I think I'll have to have a listen though.

I've actually been looking for danceable songs to make an "eyebrow raising" CD too...the stuff that's fun, but you wouldn't play for people with... er... sensitive ears. :p

    Ooooh, I'm liking it.

There are actually a couple of viennese waltzes on the Harry Potter movie Soundtracks too... (my mother's a HUGE fan of the series, so this is stuff I *need* to know :p)

    The Philosopher's Stone
    - Prologue (Viennese)
    - Hedwig's Theme (Viennese - same as prologue, but stronger)

    The Prisoner of Azkaban
    - Hedwig's Theme (same as in the Philosopher's Stone)
    - Aunt Marge's Waltz (Viennese)
    - Hagrid the Professor (Viennese)

    The Goblet of Fire
    - Neville's waltz (Waltz)
    - Potter Waltz (Viennese)

    Here are all the lyrics
    ARTIST: Tom Lehrer
    TITLE: The Masochism Tango
    Lyrics and Chords[ Ebdim7 = [IMG] ]
I ache for the touch of your lips, dear
But much more for the touch of your whips, dear
You can raise welts like nobody else
As we dance to the masochism tango
    / Em - Am - / D7 - G - / B7 - Em - / B7 - Em - /

Let our love be a flame, not an ember
Say it's me that you want to dismember
Blacken my eye, set fire to my tie
As we dance to the masochism tango
    / " / " / B7 - Em Am / B7 - Em - /

At your command before you here I stand
My heart is in my hand - yecch
It's here that I must be
My heart entreats, just hear those savage beats
And go put on your cleats and come and trample me

    / Am D7 G / Em Am / Ebdim7 E E7 / Am D7 G / Em Am D7 G B7 /

Your heart is hard as stone or mahogany
That's why I'm in such exquisite agony
My soul is on fire, it's aflame with desire
Which is why I perspire when we tango

    You caught my nose
    In your left castanet, love
I can feel the pain yet, love
    Ev'ry time I hear drums

    And I envy the rose
That you held in your teeth, love
    With the thorns underneath, love
    Sticking into your gums

    / C C7 / F - / B7 - / Em - / 1st, 2nd, 3rd / B7 - /

Your eyes cast a spell that bewitches
The last time I needed twenty stitches
To sew up the gash that you made with your lash
As we danced to the masochism tango

Bash in my brain and make me scream with pain
Then kick me once again and say we'll never part
I know too well I'm underneath your spell
So, Darling, if you smell something burning, it's my heart
    Hic! Excuse me

Take your cigarette from its holder
And burn your initials in my shoulder
Fracture my spine and swear that you're mine
As we dance to the maso-chism tango
