Just wanted to point out that you can save youtube videos to your harddrive.

    to do so:
    1) install firefox web browser,
    2) get the “videodownloader” plugin/extension for firefox,
    a. let’s you save youtube(and other video service) on to your harddrive as a .flv file
    3) get Videolan, to play save videos

The VLC player has a few nifty functions(like slow motion), but also sometimes doesn't like the flv files. The FLV player has better support, but can't do full screen, slow motion etc...

also, the mplayer/mencoder is another good set of players. The added benefit is that it has command-line options to convert to almost any video format(eg. for ipod video, smartphones, mpeg2, etc...)

    hope it helps

You don't have to download Firefox to save YouTube vids, just go to and copy/paste the URL of the video into their converter. They also have a link to download the FLV player.

Sorry to have to pester you with this, but how exactly are you saving the files onto anything? I can't seem to download anything onto my computer from youtube. I'm right clicking and then selecting "save as", but I get an error message when I do this.

Also, I don't have an ipod, I have a Creative Vision M. I will have to pull out the manual to see what kind of files it supports.

P.S. I know this doesnt have to do with youtube but I spoke with someone about downloading the IDSF comp videos from youtube and they put them in stage6 (a website). Here you can download it in better quality than you see in youtube. Let me know if you want the exact link. Its easy and the only thing you might need to download is a DIVx player

All I know is I need to be able to see certain youtube videos over and over again. If I can't download them and rewatch them, how am I supposed to perfect my Carlton dance?

    am feeling quite dense...

have followed all of tunape's steps above... already have firefox, got the plugin installed, downloaded & installed the vlc...

but now what do i do? there's nothing to right-click to save-as... how do i *use* these tools?

There should be a small icon in the bottom right of your browser window. It looks like a floppy disk in front of a film strip. Left click that, it should pop up a window... follow directions in that window.

At the bottom of the screen in the status bar you should see a little black icon, looks like a small video screen. When you are on a YouTube page and a video is downloading, left click on that icon. It will search the page, find the video stream and ask you where you want to save the video.

You will need one of about a thousand .flv players, but those are easy to find and free.
