Saw this announcement concerning the new season of So You Think You Can Dance; Fox announces the 12 "All-Star" dancers that will pair with the contestants over the season.

    The line-up:

    Stephen “tWitch” Boss
    Comfort Fedoke
    Courtney Galiano
    Anya Garnis
    Lauren Gottlieb
    Neil Haskell
    Allison Holker
    Mark Kanemura
    Pasha Kovalev
    Kathryn McCormick
    Ade Obayomi
    Dominic “D-trix” Sandoval

The show kicks off May 27...

Seems a strange twist this season. Now it's more like DWTS, but it's Dancing with the Unknowns. I don't get it.

I've been following SYTYCD from the start, so these names to me are far from unknown. They are real "stars". Perhaps to a new audience the names may be still unknown, but the quality of their dancing I think will make this a better show.

huh. not sure i like the sound of this change of format. will have to see it in action...

Yes, I know them. too. In this context, I see them as the pros--the actual contestants are the "unknowns."

It will be interesting to watch. I wonder, if some of these folks haven't taught, whether they will be good at making their partners look good. They will be able to seriously outdance someone from another style and that could make the contestant look even worse.

Well, on DWTS, how often are the "stars" actually "stars"? :)

I actually think that this idea may be crazy like a fox! (Paging the Bad Pun Police, I know, I know....)

My understanding is that SYTYCD could use a ratings booster. Season 6 did NOT do well in the ratings, and I think I'm right in saying that they didn't have a tour. Part of this was the move to fall and the competition up against the show, which was Fox's choice and in no way a reflection on the show. But I have to admit that I thought much of Season 6 was a snoozefest compared to some earlier seasons. Season 5 wasn't super-grabbing either; it's not a good sign when Nigel is in essence telling finalists that they need to show their personalities more.

Seasons 3 and 4, on the other hand, were MUST SEE, EXTREMELY ENGAGING. That moment when Twitch thought he was about to be eliminated and sat down and covered his eyes--we in ChaCha household were practically crying with him. And the choreography in seasons 3 and 4 was great. I would have a hard time even saying what my favorite number was! The only really blah moment I remember on either of those series was the 10 dancers performing the identical "Waiting on the World to Change" number in Season 3...and even that was a clever idea

And look who is coming back:

    Season 2--Alison.

Season 3--Neil, Pasha, Lauren, Anya, Dominic.

    Season 4--Twitch, Mark, Courtney, Comfort.

    Season 5--Ade.

    Season 6--Kathryn.

Now, I'm sure they didn't have a full pick of every single dancer from the past, since many of the top people have a TON of options, but I still think this sounds like smart marketing. I'll tune in with more eagerness!

Mark! :bouncy: He's my favorite dancer of all seasons. My wife says I just have a man crush on him. I look forward to watching him again this season.

I'm quite happy to see most the names on there.

But Comfort? I guess they wanted a female hip hop dancer...

I'm curious if the all stars will be paired up with the newcomers DWTS style for the whole season, or if they will switch around based on their specialties, or do a mix of same partner for first 6 weeks, and then randomize it.

Kathryn McCormick of Georgia was fun to me. I enjoyed her contemporary/lyrical style. And her positive attitude of sharing an experience with her competitors...

Each week the contestants will be paired with a different All-Star, according to FOX's SYTYCD blog

Looks like the season will last as long as before; unlike the previous seasons Top Twenty with a pair of dancers eliminated each week, now it will start the post-auditions with a Top Ten and a single dancer eliminated each week. Fox's SYTYCD March 29 blog

I kinda hate this new format idea. I hope I'm wrong, and I'm ready to love it if it turns out good, but it just seems like a gimmick to bump ratings. What are they going to do next year? Bring back a new bunch of "all-stars"? Eventually they'll run out of all-stars that we care about, or have to bring them back as regulars. And what if the all-star has a bad week? On DWTS, the pro is never going to be shown up by the star, or have anything close to a bad week. They come up with the choreo. With the all-stars, what if they have a bad week and mess up the contestant?

And only 10 dancers? Auditions keep growing every year, and they're only taking half the people that they used too?

I hope I'm wrong, but I'm not thrilled about the possibilities.

My understanding (could be wrong) is that the all-stars will only be dancing their own specialties and the contestants will be rotated to a different all-star each week. So it's not likely the all-stars will make a mess of their own style. I'm more concerned that they will out-dance their partners and make them look worse than they would with another not-star partner.
  15. I agree w/ waltzgirl-- they will switch from week to week based on their specialties; there's no reason to make the "stars" look bad or awkward by making them dance styles that they don't specialize in. I like that the partnerships will switch up every week, you wouldn't get any partnerships where one really strong partner carries a weaker one from week to week.

I'm glad partners will be switched every week. I would be a fan of that in the old format too. But just because they are dancing their own style doesn't mean they'll definitely be good. I seem to remember Comfort having hip hop performances that were just ok. I'm sure it could happen to the others too.

Also, there's no Bollywood specialist. There's no Russian dance specialist. No Lindy Hop specialist. No Disco specialist. Someone's going to get a partner that's at least a little out of their comfort zone at some point.

Or maybe we won't have to suffer through bollywood, russian, lindy hop or Doriana Sanchez disco... :)

I could do without Disco. But there's been good Bollywood, Russian, and Lindy.

My point is, unless they stick to the same 3 styles the whole season, someone's going to have a specialist that isn't that special. And then it becomes unfair when everyone else has a partner that is doing what they're good at.

Good point. Guess we'll see how that particular scenario plays out when the season gets going.
