I'll get it started, and since we were discussing 80's music and it's January and I'm cold and miserable and thinking about Florida, I'll offer this up:

When I'm floating, waiting, I return,
    Washing closer to your shore

I start to drift with the tide, maybe I'll reach
    I'll reach the beach
    My heart is sealed watertight
    Maybe I'll reach
    I'll reach the beach

For me, the 80's was all Bach, Beethovan, et al. I have no idea what was happening in the popular culture at the time. I heard of Madonna and heard references to a few of her song titles, but it wasn't until less than a year ago that I ever heard any of her singing outside of "Evita". At a concert-in-the-park a few years ago, the band opened with the singer introducing the band and stating that they play "all the hits from the 80's". A spectator nearby commented, "Well, this shouldn't take long."

I have a German comedy tape from the 80's (yes, there are German comedians) in which the comedian redid a "Hänsel und Gretl" song to fit the modern times. I just thought he had made up the music on his own, so I was surprised when that band played one of the tunes. I was even more surprised when watching "Grosse Pointe Blank" and I heard another of the tunes playing in the background (the reunion scene) and discovered that it was originally in German ("Neun und neun", glaub' i' schon).

And during the last few years of ARRO in LA, they kept playing more and more weird stuff I'd never heard before, so I just assumed it was from the 80's. 'Course, most of what's played at WCS venues is also unrecognized, but, just like country music and disco, it's for dancing to, not listening to.

Reminds me of DH. He seemed to have missed from the mid-80's through the mid-90's. His knew "classical" music--especially piano stuff.

Oh, and Cornutt, I'm so glad you got the sing/sign thing correct for the thread title...that would have driven me crazy!

me too. Rock music ended with Jimi Hendrix

(so I got into Phillip Glass, Laurie Anderson, Slow Children-Has anyone here ever heard of slow children?.. I know nothing about them but have an album-PIL, Joy Division, Fripp etc if it is possile to say etc about such an ecletic mix)

Actually, I checked out of the popular culture around 1971/72, when the 50's Revival hit and I discovered JS Bach via Walter Carlos (now Wendy). One of the benefits of my timing is that I completely missed disco, though I sure didn't miss it. Though since I started Lindy 4 years ago, I've expanded my taste to 30's/40's Big Band, which I really enjoy.

My car radio is set to NPR (for news), "classical", classic rock, ARRO's former freq which is now Jack-FM (for that rare occasions that they play something good), and a couple Spanish language stations for salsa, merengue, and Rock en Español. There used to be a couple swing stations a few years ago, but they're gone. And a jazz station that plays some swing on the weekends.

    Cornutt, sorry about that hijack.

    from "This Joint is Jumpin'"
    The joint is jumpin',
    It's really jumpin',
Come in, cats, and check your hats,
I mean this joint is jumpin'!

    The piano's thumpin',
    The dancers are bumpin',
This here spot is more than hot,
In fact, the joint is jumpin'!

Check your weapons at the door,
Be sure to pay your quarter,
Burn your leather on the floor,
    Grab anybody's daughter.

    The roof is rockin',
    The neighbors knockin',
We're all bums when the wagon comes,
I mean, this joint is jumpin'!

When the house is rockin', don't bother knockin',
When the house is rockin', don't bother knocking!
When the house is rockin', don't bother, come on in!

its the same old theme, since 1916
In your head, in your head,
    They're still fighting...

With their tanks, and their bombs,
And their bombs, and their guns,
In your head, in your head,
    They are dying...

    Would you dance
if I asked you to dance?
    Would you run
    and never look back?
    Would you cry
    if you saw me cry?
And would you save my soul, tonight?

    Would you tremble
    if I touched your lips?
    Would you laugh?
    Oh please tell me this.
    Now would you die
    for the one you loved?
Hold me in your arms, tonight.

I can be your hero, baby.
I can kiss away the pain.
I will stand by you forever.
You can take my breath away.......

    Ahh..the Iglesias family....:D

de noche nos pasabamos las horas
hablando de mil cosas por hacer
y a veces en pequenas discursiones
    llegando a amanecer...

    cantaba tu cantar

y yo me cobijaba por tu cuerpo, y tu
    echabas los sentidos a volar,
perdidos en la noche y el silencio.
    sonabamos sonar.

la vida se hace siempre de momentos,
de cosas que no sueles valorar.
    y luego cuando pierdes,
cuando al fin te ha dado cuenta,
el tiempo no te deja regresar.

ya ves que todo pasa, quien diria,
ya ves que poco queda por contar.
    apenas los recuerdos,
momentos que no vuelven nunca mas

--- "momentos". my fave julio iglesias song ever... had a spanish boyfriend sing to me when i was 19 and i sing it still...

Looking away at the water's edge
Comes closer in my closer fears
Listening to the barbed wire hanging

There is a sound on the other side of this glass
A bird is singing on the other side of this glass
    Slience is returning a voice

    You should have walked away
    When you walked away
    You should have walked away
    When you walked away

MQ, I probably would just cry during the whole song if that were sung to me. Beautiful song from Enrique. Samina, an old boyfriend sang 'Hello' to me once by Lionel Richie. Really sweet. :) I think Julio should sing a spanish version of that! :D

I am thinking of getting injected, gravity's heavier than I expected
And it's pulling things out of place, my skin's getting longer than my face

And it's pooling in the creases, although my vigilance never ceases
With the emollients and the greases. I am a puzzle losing it's pieces

And the cracks are slowly growing between my tectonic plates
Continental drift, for man or woman never waits.
And there's no point in self-deceiving,
Like Australia, part of me is leaving.

I always wanted more facial definition and a somewhat stronger chin
Now I'd be happy with just a remission of this loss of collagen

You can put your fears to rest. I won't be getting any in the chest
it wouldn't solve any problems at all
And it'd just give me two more things to fall

So I am thinking of getting injected.
I'm getting older sooner than I expected.

What would you think if I sang out of tune,
Would you stand up and walk out on me.
Lend me your ears and I'll sing you a song,
And I'll try not to sing out of key.
Oh I get by with a little help from my friends,
Mmm I get high with a little help from my friends,
Mmm I'm gonna to try with a little help from my friends.

What do I do when my love is away.
(Does it worry you to be alone)
How do I feel by the end of the day
(Are you sad because you're on your own)
No, I get by with a little help from my friends,
Mmm I get high with a little help from my friends,
Mmm I'm gonna to try with a little help from my friends

    Do you need anybody?
    I need somebody to love.
    Could it be anybody?
    I want somebody to love.

Would you believe in a love at first sight?
Yes I'm certain that it happens all the time.
What do you see when you turn out the light?
    I can't tell you, but I know it's mine.
Oh I get by with a little help from my friends,
Mmm I get high with a little help from my friends,
Oh I'm gonna try with a little help from my friends

    Do you need anybody?
I just need someone to love.
    Could it be anybody?
    I want somebody to love.
Oh I get by with a little help from my friends,
Mmm gonna try with a little help from my friends
Oh I get high with a little help from my friends
Yes I get by with a little help from my friends,
With a little help from my friends!

I know it's been some time
But there's something on my mind
You see, I haven't been the same
    Since that cold November day...
    We said we needed space
But all we found was an empty place
And the only thing I learned
Is that I need you desperately...
    So here I am
And can you please tell me... oh
    Where do broken hearts go
Can they find their way home
    Back to the open arms
Of a love that's waiting there
    And if somebody loves you
    Won't they always love you
    I look in your eyes
And I know that you still care, for me :D

Picture yourself in a boat on a river,
With tangerine trees and marmalade skies
Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly,
    A girl with kaleidoscope eyes.
Cellophane flowers of yellow and green,
    Towering over your head.
Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes,
    And she's gone.

Lucy in the sky with diamonds(diamonds).
Lucy in the sky with diamonds(diamonds).
Lucy in the sky with diamonds(diamonds).
    Ah... Ah...

    {VERSE 2}
Follow her down to a bridge by a fountain
Where rocking horse people eat marshmallow pies,
Everyone smiles as you drift past the flowers,
    That grow so incredibly high.
Newspaper taxis appear on the shore,
    Waiting to take you away.
Climb in the back with your head in the clouds,
    And you're gone.

Picture yourself on a train in a station,
With plasticine porters with looking glass ties,
Suddenly someone is there at the turnstile,
    The girl with kaleidoscope eyes.

When marimba rhythms start to play
Dance with me, make me sway
Like a lazy ocean hugs the shore
Hold me close, sway me more

Like a flower bending in the breeze
Bend with me, sway with ease
When we dance you have a way with me
Stay with me, sway with me

Other dancers may be on the floor
Dear, but my eyes will see only you
Only you have the magic technique
When we sway I go weak

I can hear the sounds of violins
    Long before it begins
Make me thrill as only you know how
Sway me smooth, sway me now
