What do I need to know to dance at a honky tonk?

Thanks, dragon. Yeah, the trip was a couple weeks ago. Next time I'll try to plan ahead better, we wound up ditching the bar we tried and went to a local ballroom studio for an intro lesson instead :).

    Evaluating a city's "dance friendliness"

That's an interesting one that never would have occurred to me. I've actually never gone into the dance store in my current town.

    Evaluating a city's "dance friendliness"

When you consider a move to a new city, do you consider its local dance culture/dance friendliness as one of the factors that influences your decision to move there? If so, how do you evaluate it? Especially for long cross-country (or even cross-border) moves where you have only a few days to...

What do I need to know to dance at a honky tonk?

lol, I don't normally have a problem with east coast, but the combination of a small, crowded floor and I'm guessing more than a few beers led to what I personally would call inconsiderate dancing. It certainly would have gotten them kicked out at anyplace else I'd ever danced.

What do I need to know to dance at a honky tonk?

It wound up being irrelevant: at the Broken Spoke there were several couples in the middle of the very tiny dance floor doing a very vigorous east coast swing: the main goal then was to avoid being body-slammed, since they made no effort to avoid doing the body-slamming. I left after two dances...

What do I need to know to dance at a honky tonk?

It's like a progressive version of triple swing: all steps go forward, but that triple-step triple-step step step rhythm.

What do I need to know to dance at a honky tonk?

The two-step as it's taught here is the progressive QQSS version. Triple-two is also taught, as a separate dance. The first dance you describe sounds to me like the Country variation on the Nightclub Two-Step (long slow step left, quick together, quick across right, long slow step right, quick...

What do I need to know to dance at a honky tonk?

Wow, I tried googling "Honky tonk two step" and it really doesn't look like what I know as the "two step"—is it just me or are they not travelling in those videos? I thought that was a defining characteristic of two step.

What do I need to know to dance at a honky tonk?

Sort of: my wife wants to go to The Broken Spoke, which bills itself as "Texas' most definitive dance hall." Live music and chicken fried steak; that kind of place. Presumably there will also be beer involved.

What do I need to know to dance at a honky tonk?

I'm going to be in Austin for a few days coming up here, and my wife suggested we go to one of the honky tonks there. I'm only familiar with what I guess is competition-style country dancing, and on several occasions in classes have danced with partners who, when asked if they had ever done...

    Good Country West Coast Music?

I actually didn't even listen to country music until I started dancing two-step a couple months ago, but I really like the UCWDC's competition music list on their website. There are about 100 WCS songs on there at the moment. I danced to a bunch of them this weekend and they all seemed to work...

    Help with two-step pivot

Thanks Steve, Skippy Blair's description sound just like what we were taught (the workshop instructor was Juan Manuel from All That Dance in Albuquerque). The way we got into it was to do a right curve first so the leader is facing almost reverse LOD, and then go into the pivots. I suspect that...

    Help with two-step pivot

Thanks: dropping the "two step" from my search helped a lot (once I ignored all the basketball videos—a search for "traveling pivot" gives a lot of those too).

    Help with two-step pivot

I was at a local comp this weekend (as a spectator) and attended a basic two-step workshop where we learned pivots—I think also called "natural pivots" if that means more to you. At any rate, in the workshop we got as far as doing a few pivots in a row in place, which looks pretty good, but also...
