    Pet Peeve Phrases

Haven't you ever just for fun, after someone has asked you to dance said "Allons-y!" and watched the confused look on their face? And whenever you lose the beat "... just reverse the polarity of the neutron flow!".

    Posture Correction for Dancers

They are body awareness techniques. They teach you how to listen to and understand your body so you use it the way it's designed vs. forcing it to do something outside of the body's design. I took classes in NY City for about 2 months. http://www.feldenkraisinstitute.com/ I also took...

    Pet Peeve Phrases

I have a love/hate relationship with "Everything is Awesome". The song from the Lego movie DOES NOT HELP, my 6-year old nephew was hooked on it for 1 month. Urgh. I still find myself "singing it" after someone says, "hey, how's it going?".

    Posture Correction for Dancers

The best things I did for my body alignment were Alexander and Feldenkrais therapies. I ended up with a natural upright relaxed posture and the biggest improvement in my dancing that I have experienced. A lot of body issues I had in dance naturally corrected themselves once my body had proper...

How often do you change your comp routines?

That's the way my pro also thinks, she's constantly changing my choreography routines to the point that they're completely different by the end of each week! She's always saying, well you've improved here, so let's change this, and now your partner seems better here, so let's change this, don't...

    Conflicting coaches' advice

To further confuse the issue ;), my coach had me start ever so slightly practicing pre-leading so then the follows and I both land on-beat. Socially I've gotten good to great feedback from follows, and it seems to make choreo snappier. But pre-leading is trickier with some moves than others.

    Centering, what's your definition?

Yes I like Skippy Blair's take on Centering, it fits with what I was trying to figure out. I like the idea of centering different parts of the body with the COG, it's kinda of like the Hanoi tower game. Mentally it's helpful when practicing.

What's wrong with this picture? Are dances for experts only?

Kerpaderp has good advice, the only thing I'd add is, don't be daunted by the crazy names in Ballroom, every dance has the same basic moves (e.g. in place basic, moving basic, right turn, left turn, cross-body etc.) If you take the time to identify the moves with what you already know. You can...

What's wrong with this picture? Are dances for experts only?

Well, at least those multiple dance style events give you something to shoot for ;) Personally, I like the multi-dance style events, as I like the ebb & flow of the different music. My take on it is that Ballroom and street dance communities (Salsa, WCS) have different approaches to dancing...

    Centering, what's your definition?

Hi, so what's your definition of centering? I thought I knew what it meant, and then realized people are using it in different ways. Also, what do you call it when you've shifted your weight to one foot completely. So you can feel and play with the force of the floor from your big toe/ball up...

    Conflicting coaches' advice

As a lead, I've also been subject to seemingly incompatible coaching advice. I agree it's very frustrating. In all honesty though, I think the reason it's frustrating is that both coaches are probably correct, they are just coming from different perspectives. If you lack time, I'd just pick...

What are you excited about in your dancing right now?

I've started really trying to apply phrasing properly, staying in the moment, feeling the music and acknowledging the breaks and transitions. It's making me look cooler ;) ... ha ha ha, well I hope I look cooler. If not, at least I feel cooler. :joyful:

    How are your practices going?

Re-learning how to dance while applying extension and elongation. Results are really really nice but my brain is going bonkers juggling the back, shoulders, spines, torso, ribcage, arms and legs. If it's not one thing it's the other 7!

Things You Wish Follows Would Fix

Yup I agree, also my number 1 pet peeve. Practical knowledge of the CBMP and CBM is the difference between a good follow and a lovely follow! I've also encountered many follows who never seem have been introduced to the practical use of those concepts, just the theory, and some not even that. :(...

Things You Wish Leads Would Fix

Hey this is good stuff! As a lead this is what I'm hearing so far: 1. Be mindful of the correct hand position and posture, so the follow can keep her hand position and posture. 2. Dance ON time 3. Lead the turn. Never force the turn. 4. Lead yourself first, then there is something to follow...
