Joy in Motion's First Annual Writing Contest!

The aim of the Joy in Motion writing contest is to encourage reflection and discussion on the uniting of spirit and movement in social dance. To this end, the topic of submission is meant to be general to allow a variety of creative entries. However, to give some guidance to interested applicants, the entries may address the following concepts in social dance: connection, musicality, flow, spirituality, energy, healing, culture, travel, learning, teaching, personal experience and any others not listed that relate to “Joy in Motion: Uniting Spirit and Movement.” Entries may refer to experience in any form of social dance, but it is preferable that submissions demonstrate concepts that are applicable to all social dance forms. The entry must be less than 1,000 words and may come in any form – article, essay, short story, poetry, or other. The winning entry will be selected based on content and writing style.

The deadline for contest submissions is March 1, 2009. The winner will be announced on the Joy in Motion website on March 15 as well as in the April newsletter.

To enter, please email your submission to with Writing Contest Submission in the subject line. The entry may be copied and pasted into the body of the email or attached as a Word or PDF document. Writers are encouraged to include a short bio of themselves, but this is optional and will not affect the judging. Writers are also encouraged to edit their work for spelling, grammar, clarity, accuracy and style before submitting.

The winning entry will be published on the Joy in Motion website and win a $50 gift certificate to Dancing Art!
