and fwiw...there are benefits to staying close to where the comp is occurring rather than having to traipse a distance. if it's a matter of saving a few bucks, IMHO, not worth it.

though at OSB i stayed at the adjacent hotel and liked that arrangement very much. they've got a great indoor-outdoor pool which you can use even when it's snowing... :)

I have stayed off site and on...it is a bit of a pain to stay offsite if the weather doesn't cooperate...though lately it has been fine...and it is only a bit of a PITA to stay off site...however, if the cash isn't that big of a deal, onsite and/or drury is the way to go...

I also consider the Crowne Plaza across the street connected by a walkway "on site". That is where I will stay. My second choice is the Lofts as it is a bit further but still connected by a walkway per etp's post. I was surprised at how fast rooms booked up though.

As others have said, it's always good to compare the comp rate to the regular hotel rate (if you can get a room on your own), and to other nearby hotels. And then, like everything else, you have to weight what staying at the comp hotel is worth to you!

I've definitely found that, with some comps, the comp hotel rate is the best you'll get (Manhattan Dancesport comes to mind). And there are others where you can get cheaper by going straight through the hotel (Capital comes to mind). And still others where it is worth it, to me, to stay a couple of blocks away for the price difference (certainly depends on the city).

We've only been to Ohio the last couple of years, which thankfully happened to be decent weather. Both times we stayed at a hotel a couple of blocks away and, for us, that was fine. We knew what we were getting and were okay with that.

I guess as in all things, it comes down to what is worth it to each person. To me, it is worth it to stay either at the comp hotel or as close as possible. Especially in Ohio. Walking two blocks in the snow either in ballroom dress or carrying ballroom dress just doesn't seem like fun to me. But we all have to figure out what our splurges are going to be and where we can cut costs.

OMG everyone i said two blocks, i meant it might even be 2 doors down. Please dont go somewhere and count two blocks down and go "yup right here like 'itsthisgirl' said!" I've done other forms of dance competitions. Now to me i dont need all the bells and whistles at a hotel, i just need a bed, bathroom, and for it to be clean and not smell funky (which i come prepared to tackle that, and running the AC usually works with that also). But i've stayed across the road from a hosting hotel and saved a good 50 to 100 dollars a night. YES well worth it. AND the hotel was nice, and when they found out why i was there for some unknown reason they upgraded my room for no cost and offered me way more than what i needed in hopes of getting more business via word of mouth. Like everyone says, its all up to the person, Cost vs. Worth, two very different things (as described in the movie Shop-a-holic). I have no problem walking a block in the cold, and some hotels offer a shuttle or cab, depending on distance. BTW might see yall there :)

As Debmc, said, we have to figure out where we want to splurge. When i'm in competition or traveling i'm rarely in my room, i go to shower and catch a few hours of sleep. I dont mind staying in a basic room. I dont mind making a small trek to the hosting site. That way i have the money to enter into more categories, go site seeing, get more fabulous costumes, and have more money to spend. but thats just me, i'm not rich...yet...*shrug*

Well, crap, I can't do Smooth. There's absolutely no way I can get to Columbus by Wednesday, not Thursday, morning. That's really irritating. I'm tempted not to bother if I'd only do Latin again.

#33
I am thinking about it, too. I do silver smooth and gold standard, so with the old schedule my main days would be Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, I could theoretically do some latin on Friday, but I seriously have a problem with getting there by Wednesday morning AND having an empty day on Thursday because I don't do gold smooth yet.

Darn it. I do Rhythm and Standard. There is no way I'm burning an entire week of vacation days from work and then be short on days when my real vacation comes up.
SIGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, skipping this year. My friends are going with pro but they can take time off.

I sent them a note on their contact form stating my opinion of the schedule change, 3wishes. You might want to drop them a note, too. If enough people say something, it does say "tentative". I'd love to know why they decided to change it--do they have that many American-style entries they need two days for Smooth and all Tuesday for Rhythm? If that's the issue it would really make more sense to move pro/am Latin and Standard to Tuesday and Wednesday then use the "weekend" for Rhythm and Smooth since there are more people who need to take off work if that's the case. Especially if they're doing American-style Bronze and Silver championships. I'd be interested in that a LOT, but...can't do it. And if they don't have those for International styles it ends up really not being worthwhile for bronze.

#37
They have a lot of standard entries, too. It takes up most of Saturday and the scholarship is on Sunday. Not as many latin ones, apparently, since they're able to fit all of pro-am latin into one day. But they have this pro am rising star stuff for american style, though, and apparently that eats up a lot of time as well.

Personally, I'm beginning to think that this particular comp is no longer worth doing until I get to gold in smooth and get more experience with gold standard (so that I have a better chance of making the next cut in the multi-dance).

Thanks DOI and THD, I have sent them a note, two years in a row. I know they have lots of entries, it just would be nice if possibly the organizer(s) rotate the styles each year to different days so those of us who spend all day "flying/driving" travel days can use the weekends to compete and fly home. It comes with the territory of entries and scheduleing I suppose.

Looks like Hyat and Crowne Plaza are sold out. Any oher recommendations? Or the organizers have some blocks that are not released yet. First time planning to attend Ohio Ball, so any suggestions are very welcome
