Not quite-- the " original " was in the 50s ( my first teacher was one of the first judges ) and it was danced on a regional basis with couples (Amats only) representing for e.g. the N.E. against the S.W.

It was filmed I believe, by the BBC in London.

Wasn't around in the 50s, but I did see some during the 80s when Angela Rippon used to present it. Although not as 'comical' as Bruce Forsyth, I thought Ms Rippon was a very classy presenter. If I remember correctly, she was also one of the very first female presenters.
