Yup. Me likes variety!
I do agree that Mustang Sally is an old stand by. It's got easy "breaks" in it so you can it them in your dancing, and you can't beat its sultry bluesy sound.

But like so many "classic" songs that get associated with a certain type of dance (and who indeed, can argue that this song isn't associated with West Coast), it tends to get a bit overplayed at the dance haunts, causing many of the hardcore dancers to get irritated whenever it gets played.

Tell me if this is what you get in your local dance scene, but in my local Swing scene, many of the dancers get easily bored if they keep hearing the same songs played over and over, even if it is a kickin' good song, or even if the song itself only got dropped within the last six months (in fact even MORE so if it is a recent radio hit which is perceived as "old").

The local Westie crowd either favors the beats being played on the national circuit, or they favor the latest radio hits you can Swing to (even if the music is void of rolling triples, as is much of the latest top 40 hits).

I'd say we get a mix of dancers at the CW place where I dance.

To me a "Westie" is a real die hard and is likely to dance it to just about anything.
Now, if they play what most of us partner dancers consider to be a "pop" song ("I Kissed a Girl" was the latest scurge), or some rock n roll standard for people who don't know how to do anything but shake their booties, people will eventually figure out something to do to it. And as we know WCS, is pretty versitile.

I don't know if any of the - by popular opinion - "good" people compete, but I know some of them apparently accept money to teach (although I think they should give their students their money back) so I'm guessing we don't get any national sircuit tunes. They will play Mustang Sally and some other WCS "standards", though, that have been around for ages.

oh gosh, I just LUV Right Here (Departed). Love it love it love it. But I'll be dammed, whenever they play that song in my town, NOBODY likes getting up to dance for it! I'm like sitting there dumbfounded thinking, "how come nobody in this At's Rass of a town likes this song?" Sheesh! It's good to know I am not the only one who likes that song. I was beginning to think there was something wrong with me. LOL.

Well, before anyone else says it, yes there still may be something wrong with me anyhow, but at least not when it comes to that song! lol

At least people around here like "Ring My Bells", which is a relief! Totally love that song.
How about all the new stuff from Kevin Rudolph, like "Let It Rock", "Welcome to the World", "Gimme A Sign", those are all super popular nowadays.

Also some good new songs are "Just Dance" and "Poker Face" by Lady Gaga.

One of my all-time favourites is "How to Save a Life" by The Fray, and also "Let's Get It Started" by the Black Eyed Peas.

This forum is great, I found so many good songs here:D
West Coast Swing - Music?

I'm taking a coaching lesson with Ron Christy in September, to have him choreograph a West Coast Swing (WCS) routine for myself and my instructor.

However, I'm really getting bored of the five songs that our studio rotates through for WCS dancing. So, I appeal to you and the collective dancing knowledge of this forum!

I am somewhat of an oddball and I love obscure music. I want to dance to something that no one's heard of, so there's some personality and "wow, that's a neat song.. ooh and a hawt routine!" reaction to my dance.

But more than that, I just need suggestions! I don't listen to blues or pop, but I really want to fall in love with the song I dance to. Where do you guys go to find good WCS music? Help!

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you provide!
As most of you are already aware, there's a nice long thread like four down from this one discussing good WCS music. We will pretend that I saw it from the beginning, and therefore my image remains intact. Yes.

Going through it, I have to say these are my favorite songs:

Giorgia - la la song

Enrique Inglesias - Ring My Bells

Michael Jackson - Whatever Happens

Corinne Bailey Rae - Put Your Records On

Come On Get Higher - Matt Nathanson (good song maybe not for a routine)

I’m Outta Love - Anastacia (too fast? hustle song, more like)

Norah Jones - Day is done (I like this one the best, this one wins!)

I have noticed however that a lot of the songs suggested are very fast ... things I would cha cha to rather than WCS. Are there other styles of WCS out there other than the slow, blues-y one that I dance? I assume the answer is yes, but could someone enlighten me as to the differences, or are the steps the same, it's just danced at a hyped pace?

If you don't like anything above, you might want to post a question on Strictly Westie dot com a forum dedicated to WCS.
I am somewhat of an oddball and I love obscure music. I want to dance to something that no one's heard of, so there's some personality and "wow, that's a neat song.. ooh and a hawt routine!" reaction to my dance.
More stuff that everybody has heard of : DJ Music Survey.

My primary sources of interesting songs are (a) the playlist of KGSR here in Austin, (b) Pandora and (c) crossing over into Blues Dancing to see what those DJs are spinning.

Another trick, when you hear something that you like, is to find alternative covers. Find a local band that you like? check out what they have recorded.

Competitions songs do tend to run a bit quicker than social songs - it's easier to keep the energy up and the audience engaged.

Here are some things in my Library that I think would be fun for Routines (sorted alphabetically by artist).

Atlanta Rhythm Section - So Into You
Captain and Tennillle - Shop Around
Jeff Golub - Hello Betty
Jill Johnson - Heartbreak Hotel
Bloodsucker Blues - Jools Holland
Marc Broussard - Home
Trace Adkins - Baby I'm Home
Wellesley Tupelos - Ain't Nothin' Wrong With That
