Does anyone here know about publishing?

The sister of a friend passed away in February, after fighting cancer for several years. While she was sick, she did a series of pen-and-ink cartoons about the experience which were just amazing. She was even recognized by Baltimore magazine as Comic of the Year (I don't remember what year) for the series.

A bunch of us were thinking that it might be a very nice thing to do for the family if we could get the series published in some way. (Currently they're just photocpied and stapled together in little booklets.)

Does anyone here have information about how we would go about doing something like this, or if it's even possible?

Sounds like a really nice tribute to your friend. I can't answer your question, but I hope you're able to find a nice way to commemorate her work. It would probably comfort others in a similar situation. Good luck to you!

There are various self-publishing companies, where you give them your book and pay them to publish it. This could include editing and design, or just printing what you give them as it is. I don't know anything specific about any of these companies, so can't recommend one.

Watch out for copyright -- do not go with any company that asks you to give them the copyright. It is your book, you are paying for it to be published, you should keep all the rights.

As cartoons, they may be better produced as a limited series of prints for hanging, rather than as a book. And I guess you would talk to art people about that, rather than book publishers.

Hi Peaches, what do you intend to do with the "published" book? Do you mean to sell it? Or are you looking to "publish" the book as keepsakes for the family?

I ask because I have, in the past, done hand book binding for myself and others (I taught myself). I haven't done it recently, because of picking up dancing as an all consuming hobby, but you may be able to find an individual or small company that would be willing do the layout, printing and binding in a small run if you are looking for keepsakes.

My last project was 20 or so books of poems for a friend of the family. It was about 100 pages, which I laid out using photoshop, printed on my home color printer and then hand bound (with japanese silk covers).
