What is the French Waltz?

This site mentions that it is "Also known as the Viennese waltz, the French waltz involves lots of turning and absolutely no 'forwards, side, together'."

While Answers.com doesn't have an entry on the French waltz, but it does mention that "The Viennese Waltz, so called to distinguish it from the Waltz and the French Waltz, is the oldest of all ballroom dances."

So are they the same dance, but just known today as the Viennese waltz or 2 completely different dances like what the English waltz is compared to the Viennese waltz?

Sounds kinda like vintage rotary waltz.

As far as I know, there is a quarrel over the history of the Waltz, which is known as Viennese Waltz. The French claim it origins from France, so they call it the French Waltz.
That's what I've been told, anyhow..

I wonder whether the fleck. in modern v-waltz is an element of the "French Waltz"?

I went to this thread and it conjured up memories of an LA group who asked me to pitch in briefly a couple years ago. Wonderful people!
