How did it come about?

I only discovered it by chance and as I play "catchup" am amazed by the knowledge, the friendliness of everyone and that I am in the company of champions  Wow, oh wow, oh wow!

:notworth:

 This is amazing! Where have you (meaning DF) been "all my life"?!?

Unfortunately I have to get to campus at the moment, but I'll try and give you the history of the DF later today (unless DanceMentor gets to it first?)!

I am interested too. I've had bits and pieces, but I don't think I have completely finished the jigsaw puzzle of df history, yet!! :)

OK, not sure if I'll be able to get to this today (but I promise I'll try), but I'll make sure to get to it by tomorrow at the latest...

OK, so I'm a day late... :?

So, in brief, here’s the deal… (please note, there have been *many* members who have contributed to the growth of these forums, some as former moderators and many more through their participation. As a history of how the DF came about, most of those I’m mentioning by name are members of the current administrative team)

DanceMentor first launched these forums (back on September 18, 2002) out of a desire to have a place where quality information about dance could be discussed and exchanged free from commercial interests.

Of the currently active members the earliest to join the DF include Spitfire who joined on Jan 24, 2003, as the 19th member and Larinda McRaven who joined on Feb. 7, 2003, as the 20th member.

I stumbled across this site and joined on March 28, 2003, as the 38th member. While I was (and am) a member of several other dance discussion sites, I really liked the lack of commercial interest associated with this site and, after my initial participation, was invited to become a Moderator, first of the ballroom forum and shortly thereafter of the salsa forum as well. Not too much later, as we started adding other active moderators, I became Site Moderator.

Salsarhythms joined on April 4, 2003, as the 46th member and became moderator of the Salsa Forum on April 19, 2003. Vince A. joined the DF, as the 88th member on May 16, 2003 and d nice joined on July 10, 2003 as the 128th member (at the moment I’m unsure of the exact dates that they both became Swing Forum moderators, but it was sometime in August 2003). The next member of the current team to join was Swing Kitten who joined on Aug. 10, 2003, as the 185th member, and became Dancers Anonymous and Funstuff & Inspiration moderator on Sep 9, 2003. Pygmalion joined as the 210th member on Aug. 22, 2003 and became Ballroom moderator on Sep. 8, 2003. Our resident poet, Borikensalsero, joined us on Aug. 27, 2003, as the 225th DF member, and joined Salsarhythms as a Salsa moderator on 23, 2003. MadamSamba joined the DF on Oct. 4, 2003, as the 296th, and took over as Argentine Tango moderator on Jan 23, 2004. The last member of our current team to join was Sagitta who joined on Oct. 23, 2003, as the 336th member, and joined Vince A. as moderator for General Dance on Dec 19, 2003.

 SD and NeoDevin.

Hey SD you also forgot:

700+ registered users, by Feb 26. Not bad going for a forum that has been in existence for just under one and a half years.

And it looks like we'll hit 800 today or tomorrow. It's really amazing when you see see the exponential growth rate over the past few months. Yay for us! :D

Yup!! It looks as if df has taken off and is one what promises to be a really long adventurous productive....flight. :)

I also want to support SD's point. We might not be here now if not for the work and support of some folks who, for whatever reason, are not currently with us. MissAlyssa, I miss you. You were a great and fun DF contributor, and you really helped get the DF ball rolling. I know you're busy now, with your jobs and your life, but don't think your contribution has been forgotten. It hasn't. 8)

Yup, many, many others have contributed to making the DF what it is today. Or, mor3e accurately, *everyone who's ever posted* has played a role!

Just to name a few more, some of the more substantial contributions from those not currently part of the DF staff include:

Spitfire, who initially suggested seperating non-dance items from the general forum... a suggestion that I later revived and from which DanceMentor created the DA.

MissAlyssa, who jumpstarted the forums with what is still a record (70+ posts in one day!!!) and was a moderator for F&I & DA.

Will35, who singlehandedly kept the AT forum running for quite some time.

Another question  What was so significant about February 15th that 110 users were online
