Yes. That gives it away. Google, baby. I won't say. I was actually going to guess Arthur Murray, before the hint. I googled for photos of good old Art, but couldn't find any. I wonder if there are any to be had. Hmm.
 
Yes, Vernon Castle certainly invented a dance...
(BTW, welcome to the Dance Forums!)
...but this is not Vernon Castle, although this person danced in the same era as the Castles.
 
Peabody would have been another good guess in a similar (slightly later, I think) time period, but the guy who invented that one was supposed to have been really fat. Hence the way off to one side dance hold. Hmm.
 
Hi anonymous lady! Welcome. 8) :D And of course, peabody was later, because it was a variation/derivation of the foxtrot. LOL.
 
Having NOT read the thread... Gene Kelly.

And now don't I feel STUPID. But he DOES look like Gene Kelly. Same facial expression, hands in pockets.... DRAT!

Google image search brings up three or four on the first page (all with his wife).
