What do you wear to milongas?

I have a standard tango "uniform", consisting black pants and a top of some sort, same with salsa, but I know lots of people who get really dressed up for milongas and go the whole hog, right down to the fishnet stockings or hats for men.

What do you wear to milongas? Do you dress up and if so, does it change the experience for you?

For the guys, does it feel different dancing with a woman who's dress up and vice versa for the women?

Okay I've been to only two milongas, and both this past weekend, but I like the whole scene. The people dressing up, the decor and ambience of the place, the friendly people. I like seeing people looking good, so I prefer the ladies and even other gents being dressed up. What I wear does play a role in how I feel. So, dressing up changes my demeanour, how I comport myself.

I did dance with some people who weren't dresed up last night and that did not feel any different to me. It is like salsa/ latin nights. I prefer to have people dressed up.

Generally the Perth tango community is pretty good when it comes to dressing up for Milongas. Most do make the effort even for a regular Milongas with varying degrees of dress depending upon the location.

Unfortunately, its a bit of a let down when the host themselves doesn't make the effort. Once this particular host turned up in shorts, thongs and a t-shirt. Clearly this host was only interested in getting the money as it came through the door. As a result I haven't gone back to any of their Milongas.

However, I do believe Tango Milonga are better when people are dressed up.

Yeah! I will be going to my first AT group class and my first practica/milonga. I even convinced my husband to come with me (thank God we found someone to watch our daughter).
Would it be OK for me to wear a pair of black pants (not jeans)?

A definite yes for my area. It would be unfair for me to say yes and then 9.5 out of ten people to be wearing dresses in your milonga. Is it a milonga or a practica? If a practica then 100% yes. The prcatica/milonga part gets me confused... :?

Here anything but jeans wouldn't be ok, in a practica. And in our milongas, I've seen everything, including short trousers. When in Rome do what romans do, so maybe you should dress like every other people who regularly attend your milonga.
