What I learned at Peach's Party

I love teaching. Actually, I love teaching dance.

It was funny. There were, as usual at these social events, relatively few guys there who could dance, so I ended up teaching most of my partners (guys and gals) a basic step or two, talking them through it, encouraging them. You know, teaching.

And the funny thing is, I had as much, if not more fun, than I do when I dance with guys who can dance. No pressure. Lots of fun. And the ultimate reward -- a tentative smile from my "students" at the end of each dance. :D Made my day.

So I've been thinking about teaching a lot. The only problem is that I don't particularly want to work as a dance tacher, especially full time. It's a hard life for many -- physically and emotionally demanding, with the rewards sometimes few and far between. (The communications skills I think I've got. Modest, aren't I?) :P

But now I have an itch. So what kinds of things, if any, can a wannabe dance teacher who doesn't want to be a dance teacher do, to scratch it?

Thoughts?

One suggestion: Private or by appointment classes since you don't want to be in it full time. Quite a few people do that. Next time I have a shingdig, I'd like you to bring your business cards with you and we'll have them displayed on the table. I'm serious. Good way to build your clientele muchacha.

Thanks Peach...it would behoove me to pay a little more attention to the posts around here...shows how much I've been out of it lately...

Glad to hear the party was a blast! Pygmalion - I do hope you consider teaching dance...I bet you would be a wonderful teacher! :D

I have had people ask me if I teach as sometimes at the social dances I go to I'll help a couple sitting on the side get onto the danec floor. I'll also but in, quietly when people are prcaticing steps during the free lesson before the dance and offer a suggestion or two. I don't think that I'm at the level yet that I can do that so I usually decline. :)

Yup. Exactly where I am, Sagitta. I don't feel I have the experience to actually teach, so, if I were to do it, I'd want to get some serious coaching in the basics. That, and some study of the theory behind the basics. :? Hmm...
