Dancing in the streets

Here's something you don't see every day: a group of DanceSport competitors performing on a rainy city street in January.

To promote Vancouver's upcoming Snowball Classic international DanceSport competition happening Feb 11-13, DanceSport BC organized a "Street Ambush" demo of DanceSport. It took place in the rain on a busy downtown street corner in Vancouver, Canada Sunday January 30. The dancers performed around a single intersection, with music blasting and television news cameras everywhere. After an hour they were cold but thrilled to have promoted DanceSport.

The reaction of the people on the street was an adrenaline rush: people exclaiming with delight how they would love to dance like that, cars honking their appreciation, and lots of people wanted to know more about DanceSport. The funniest moment was when I heard a woman behind me gasp and exclaim, "look at the knat on that guy!"

I posted some photos for those who are interested:

BTW, the girl in the purple dress is my daughter.

Where was this from?

A DanceSport demonstration near Vancouver, Canada around mid-December I think. It was organized by DanceSport BC, the governing body for amateur competitive DanceSport in BC Canada. As you can see from the photos, it attracted quite a crowd!

Pretty cool… Would have been great to see it! Do you know any of the couples that participated?

Although I wasn't there, I know most of the couples in the pictures. I compete against a number of them :P

That would have been cool... Wish I could have seen it but unfortunately I'm on the other side of the world. Though we do have something similar coming up on March 6. We have a massive festival called the Perth International Arts Festival, and to finish it John "Mr. Cha Cha" O'connell has choreographed a mambo routine. They're transforming the town square into a ballroom and our aim is to get at least 500 couples... it should be pretty cool. Anything that promotes dancing is good, maybe then there wont be such a shortage of guys doing it :(

That's absolutely huge! Sounds like a terrific event. Wish I could see it.

there'll be photos on the website... just search "perth international arts festival" after march6. or fly to australia... but that's probably a little more expensive.
