Samba Line Dance

Whenever a Samba is played at the studio's open dance that I attend most people get up to do a Samba line dance. The only time I've seen it is here so I'm wondering if it's done much in other places around the country. The instructor who introduced it came here from Chicago about three years ago.

I've never hearn of a Samba line dance, but I'll bet that would be a lot of fun. I'd be curious to know which Samba steps you use.

Here in Atlanta we often do Salsa line dancing (in the clubs, at the studios, and even in some Salsarobics classes). I teach some Salsarobics classes and would love to find a way to incorporate Samba. :o

Actually I am not familiar with the steps since I'm not into line dancing, but this one is popular at the studio and thus my curiousity.

We do the samba line dance in South Florida. It is great fun and a good way to practice the basic samba steps. It's the most fun with a great jungle beat samba.

Welcome to the forums, Marciah!
:D
Do you do basic syllabus steps to the music?
Or is there a specific line dance you do every time?

It is a choreograohed line dance.
Start with Left Ft.- 3 samba walks and a lock step 1,2,3 & 4
Repeat sarting ion Right Ft. 5,6,7,& 8
4 botafogas to the R,L,R,L
4 voltas to the Right and 4 voltas to the Left
4 counts turning voltas to the Left and 4 counts turning voltasto the Right
Finish facing the opposite way and start over.

It moves in 2 directions, to front and back walls rarther than using 4 walls like some line dances.

It's great fun.

Which brings me to another well known line dane the Electric Slide...

I have not seen the Electric Slide done here in a long time, but when I went dancing in the Seattle area during the two trips I made there it was being done at the dances I attended.

Is this still popular in other areas of the country?

our studio will do a line dance just for those who do not yet know how to Samba. My instructer is the one who will start it and usually those who don't know how to Samba will join in while those who do Samba will partner dance. I used to like the line dance before I learned some Samba but now it irritates me because the ladies who do know how to Samba will join in on the line dance and leaves me without a partner.

They do a samba line dance in a couple of studios in my area. And at least one will frequently get a botafogo-ing conga line going around the outside of the floor. It's fun for the people who haven't learned/don't like samba, I guess, but can be a bit annoying for the 2 or 3 couples actually trying to dance.

Here in the Midwest, the Samba line dance is VERY common. All the real dancers secretly hate the Samba line dancers, who pay no attention to the people actually dancing Samba around the floor and often line dance right up to a wall, making it too hard to pass.

The version we do here (Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, etc) goes like this.

Bota Fogo x4, commence with RF, 1a2 3a4 5a6 7a8
RF Travelling Volta moving L x4, 1a2a3a4
LF Travelling Volta moving R x4, 5a6a7a8
Turn 1/4 R, 3 walks forward RLR, then kick with LF, 1 2 3 4
3 walks backward LRL, then point RF side, 1 2 3 4

recommence

I've seen:
two full basics (forward/back, but I'm the jerk who does whisks instead)
bota fogos x 4
volta x 4 one direction, then the other.

I've been the samba line dance leader at our studio for years. I'm trying to pass the crown on so I can get back to dancing actual samba.

My old collegiate team has a samba line dance too! It's ironic because we are exclusively American style!

Commence left foot, 3 walks forward, kick right foot, 4 walks back to where you started
4 whisks, starting on the left
4 *promenade(?) samba walks forward, starting L
4 traveling voltas to the right, switch to face back wall and 4 traveling voltas, now to the left.

*** and then start again facing the back wall!
