Question for the well endowed ladies

So, after a 6 year haitus and a year of hopeless searches, I'm finally back on the dance floor and will be going to my first comp in about a month. As per usual, I will be making my own dress but, I'm concerned. The last time I had to make a dress, I was very young and quite different in cup size so I didn't have the problem I am facing now. I'm very worried about spillage. Any suggestions?

we do have some old threads on this but I can't find them right now...hopefully one of our seamstress sorts will chime in shortly ...if not, I would pm dressgirl or laura or both

I'm not THAT well-endowed and I am definitely NOT a seamstress but...

Get a bra in your size (a style and fit you like and wear daily so it's comfortable and you know it fits well) and put it into your dress. If you are making a dress with an open back, cut off the parts of the bra that would show there (usually anything but the cups and the material that connects them in front) and connect the left over front part around the back with tan elastic. Don't use the cups they sell in fabric stores - they don't hold anything above an A cup well...

I agree about the fabric store cups.... i have a friend who is a long standing member of the itty bitty titty committee, and even she dislikes those cups... and she can usually go around without a bra most of the time bc she is FLAT, so there you have it!!!! LOL

I myself am not very well endowed either, so I do not have very much boobie advice...

I have mostly had problems with spillage down through my dress rather than up out of it, and there I find that the crucial thing (esp. with Standard/Smooth dresses--not sure what style you mean) is to make sure the waist/underbust is quite fitted. Combine that with relatively full-coverage cups and your chest won't have anywhere to go!

For Latin, where my dress is completely backless, I actually cut up a bra so that I can wear the cups inside my costume. I bought a few of those clear convertible straps (e.g. from Target) and replaced the bra's shoulder straps and the back part of the band with those. I sewed the bra part to the dress so it's concealed, and I hook the straps on when I put it on. It has always worked well for me. They're adjustable so I can always tighten them enough to create some support all the way around my back. Depending on your size you might be able to use the normal cups people put inside costumes in a similar way, but for me those are never going to cut it

Good luck! If you are interested in the contraption I described for my Latin costume, haha, PM me and I can give you some more detail/send photos.

Okay, what Ithink said :) I personally like the clear straps better than tan elastic precisely because they are adjustable, but actually sewing a strap back there might be more secure.

ahem...interestingly enough, while I have...um...a fair amount of endowment, I have never really had nuch of a problem, but that is probably one of the merits of having a very good dressmaker...yet, even when I have bought off the rack, if you rron the tight side you are better off..but there are all sorts of cups out there and a good designer can help you decide what you should have

I agree with the rest of the girls on getting a regular bra and not those stupid bra cups at the fabric store. Not sure if it's just spillage or support that you're worried about... (I always worried more about support!) But I found that bras with a slight push up have lots more support than just a regular bra you might wear for a normal day.

Then again... you could always get the surgery done. My insurance paid for mine ;)

I beg to differ about fabric stores cups - I bought a bigger pair marked for D - DD to put into a used dress and they hold my assets pretty well.
