Short Hair in Standard/Smooth

I have short hair (slightly shorter than chin length), a bob essentially, and for latin/rhythm, I normally just let go as it creates a lot of movement on the floor. I am concerned about standard/smooth though. I used to put it in a bun when it was longer but now that's it's short, obviously I can't do that. I thought about putting in a hair piece, however, I can't pull my hair back into a ponytail very well...it's just a stubby little thing and since there are layers they go everywhere. I know I could probably use a ton of gel to solve that problem, however, if I am dancing both latin/rhythm and smooth/standard in the same day I won't be to take a shower in the middle of the day to wash all the gel out and have my hair down for latin/rhythm. What would you guys suggest? Could I leave my hair loose for standard/smooth?

I think it depends greatly upon how much motion your hair gives off...I would tend to cut it shorter if you don't want to gel it so that the motion is so minimal as to not be a distraction

Just an idea...you could try pinning the front of your hair back from your face with some sparkly clips or hairpins and probably just leave the back as it is. It would still have some movement for your latin/rhythm but not be overly distracting during standard/smooth.

Not for dancesport, so I don't know how well it will translate, but one time when I wanted a fancy up-do equivalent when I had short hair the stylist did twists in the front, and then curled the bejeezuz out of the back. She basically took one inch wide sections in the front, made little twists straight back from the hairline towards the crown of my head (think sorta like cornrows), and then pinned it into place and curled the rest. I've had that done twice, and it looked awesome. Lots of compliments every time.

The other thing is that it stayed put really well. Almost too well. Some sort of gel/wax goop was used to create the twists, so there was absolutely no movement and no stray hairs sticking out, and there more so many bobby pins (plenty of which had sparkly things on them) I swear i was finding them for days.

That's a really good idea too, I went to a wedding where the bride wore her hair like that, it was so pretty and didn't move all night.

Ooh, short hair, I love it. So cute with Latin/rhythm. Hey, would it possible to put a toothed rhinestone headband in your hair for smooth? You'd have a little sparkle in your hair and if you sprayed it/gel it it might stay rather well. Just a thought!

Anna Shabazyan (sorry for spelling mistakes) recently cut off her hair into a short "Louise Brooks" style bob. She dances Pro Smooth and looks awesome that way. You can probably find pictures of her through Google (she dances with Yuriy Pavlov).

hmm....i didn't know there were any smooth/standard people with short hair. I tried googling the names but I couldn't find a decent picture. Do you know where I might find one?

Did you try dancesportinfo.net? They used to dance Standard, so they might be in there. Thing is, she only cut her hair off recently, so there might not be any pictures.

Rita Gekhman, who also dances Standard, used to have a bob, but now it's long.

Iveta Liouksuite (I don't think I spelled that right) used to have long hair, and now it's cut off into a great bob, but she does her hair with false pieces for Standard.

I do believe my pro may expend more care & energy perfectly immobilizing his cropped hair than I do my long...

We're in the exact same boat as you. Since we find the Latin more exciting... my DP (and I agreed) to style her hair "for LATIN" and whatever that is... it will just stay that way for Standard. Through all of that messing around, she's actually found a (short hair) style that has even generated compliments from people (including a coach and judge) watching our Standard.

This is one of those styles where her stylist one day said "I have an idea but you'll have to trust me on this", and my DP said "go for it".

Best I can describe is that it is closely cropped on ONE side only (like a guys cut), but much more like a bob (or a bit longer) on the other side (and the back for that matter).

I used to have hair like that! It was a really fun style.

As for having short hair with layers, can't you just use a lot of gel and hairspray to seal it all against the side of your head for when you use your hairpieces?

Pro has hair not much longer than yours, and she uses one of those cliip on hairpieces of some sort. Mom and sister use them too. Wlell, mom still does, think sister's is long enough agian she doesn't have to (if she was still competing)
