Salsa in Columbus OH?

Hi,

I checked in the salsa around the world thread and didn't find anything at the Columbus OH link.

Anyone know where I can get a dance on out there? I could go Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday night.

Thanks,
Mathina

Cool--Do you live in Columbus? I'll be visiting from DC this week for work. I also heard on another forum about a place called Global on Thursday nights--it's downtown. Know anything about that one?

Thanks,
Mathina

Yes. I think Global is on Front Street in the downtown area. I haven't been there in several years.

I gotta say my experience dancing in Columbus left much to be desired. Last summer, I returned to my home state after many years. I was excited to be able to check out the scene in Columbus, which is about an hour from where I grew up. I tried Spain first (my sister lived nearby), and I was sorely disappointed. There were, maybe, two couples there, and they were very raw beginners. I ended up dancing a couple of merengues with a group of nice young local guys, and went home. Next, I tried South Beach. I had a slightly better time here, as I became acquainted with a couple of instructors and their students. I was able to dance a little more, but still was unable to get my fix.
The last place I tried was where I had the best time. I can't remember the name of it, but it was somewhere downtown. I know that it wasn't Global, because I heard from someone later that Global was the best place to go.
I didn't have a blast at this place, but there were at least a few guys that I would classify as intermediate-level dancers.
My sister has since moved from Columbus down here to Atlanta, so I doubt I'll ever get to check out Global. Let us know how it is.
I may be checking out Cleveland's scene around the holidays, when I go visit family. They seemed to have a few more options, but it's a bit of a drive from Columbus to Cleveland.

Maybe what you're thinking of is Long Street Entertainment, on Long Street in the downtown?

I go to Cleveland for the holidays . . . I'll be there thanksgiving and christmas this year. I do plan on hitting the salsa clubs at least once.

how it was

So, I went to Global on Thursday night, which was on Long Street and seems to be a room inside a bigger club that might, itself, be called Long Street. I had a great night. I liked the mix (about a third salsa and the rest a mix of bachata, merengue and a few reggaeton) and I thought the crowd was great. There were a lot of beginners but there were also a few dynamite partners. I chatted online ahead of time with two people who got in touch with me from other forums (fora?) and we linked up when I got there, which of course helped out with breaking the ice. One guy was the instructor--we had a few really fun dances--and the other guy seemed to know everyone, so he introduced me around.

I was particularly impressed with the place given the fact the promoter who had been running the night there (Ritmo productions) just up and moved out to someplace on Old Henderson road with a grand opening that very night (to which I might have gone had I had a car...). Even so, Global was pretty thick.

No leg humpers. $5 cosmos.

I recommend.

attention - brutal honesty below

Haven't been out dancing in a few months, but I know for sure there is a grand opening of "Cozzy" on Old Henderson this Friday (right by the Staples). This was by far the best salsa place in town for a while, especially because promoters were striving to make it little classier than what is typically seen in Columbus (aka no drunk college students hangin around, and weird little men starring at you :eyebrow: ). The only place where you will occasionally see someone dance NY2. They closed it down during late summer, but it will be up and running again this week. Yay!

Also, on Saturday nights, the same promoter is doing salsa parties at hotel Clarion in Dublin, it's called Latin Quarters. I've only been there for the opening which didn't go too well, promoter was out of town, not enough marketing, very low attendance, yadda, yadda, yadda....but I've heard it's picked up a lot since then and basically this is the place for the crowd from Cozzy's. I'm thinking of paying them a visit one of these days.

Long Street - blah, I think I've just been to this place way too many times. Plenty of good memories, though.

Club Seven - this was just opened last Thursday through Ritmo Productions, it's right next to Cozzy's, should be pretty good. Long Street is going to try to eat them alive, so let's hope it stays around for a little while.

Columbus Music Hall - still up and running, can't beat the live band and they are getting good :)

Spain - I can't remember the last time I heard "Let's go to Spain this Friday" Seriously, if it was for the quality of dancing, this place would have been closed long time ago. No offense to anyone, this is for those still stuck in the dance studios who do cross-over brakes and not wanting to learn further. Honestly, I have not had one good dance in this club. Usually someone will ask you to dance and they will hold your hand doing the same basic step over and over and over and over... You can only have so many of those in one hour ;) SO either it is the dry studio salsa, for lack of a better term, or, once it hits midnight, drunk hispanic crowd having a good time while not dancing Salsa :) It's kind of entertaining, but waste of time if you're trying to find a little space on the dancefloor, let alone a parter to dance with.

I hope this gives a little more info for those visiting out of town. I'll see if I can dig up some links with pictures and post them in a bit.

I don't live in Columbus anymore, but went to Cozzy's occasionally during the last two years and always had a great time. Decent-sized crowd (I always had to turn dances down to get a break) and there was no shortage of good leads, so the dancing was usually very fun.

Spain is still lacking. Tiny, tiny floor. There were a handful of dancers the one time I went that were ok, but it was way too crowded to really dance. Way more of a bar/reggaeton place.

The Coliseum was good for awhile, but is now closed.

Just thought I'd update the thread.
