Hi there,

I'm in Melbourne for a few days next week.

I live in Perth and do Casino Salsa lessons a couple of times a week (plus love to social dance too). Being addicted -(of course :-) I hate the idea of missing out on my dancing.

Can someone please help me with some info on venues, locations and times for Casino Salsa classes on and between Mon 29th to Wed 31st March? Preferably with a bar! (But doesn't really matter.) I'll be staying in Southbank.

Anyway, gotta go - Salsa tonite (YAY!!!).

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Bear

Hi Bear,

You've come to the right place :D !

Too bad you are only in town Mon-Wed.....classes would be all you can catch!

Monday, Veludo in Acland street, St Kilda. Run by Cuban Dance Academy. Ask for Christine.

Tuesday, Retro Cafe, Brunswick st, Fitzroy. Run by Cuban Addiction. Ask for Aloy.

I believe Viva also run classes on Tue. I think it's a Rueda one.

You will get additional info on our local website www.latinlover.com.au......plz PM me, I will give you more info.

Ooooohh! I didnt know about this class! I was at Retro just this past weekend and all my friends were telling me they had a dancefloor upstairs but due to a reception there I couldnt sneak up for a peek!

Am most definantly giving them a call this afternoon :D

Welcome, Bear...SalsaChinita has pretty much covered it...the only thing I could add is that several ballroom studios have salsa classes on the days you're in town.
Though there's usually little comparison between street salsa and ballroom, a couple aren't too bad, depending on your level of salsa.

Oh wow, this was a post from a while ago.. Didn't know that Aloy's been running that class for quite that long.. he's still teaching at Retro i heard.. and Cuban Dance Academy's branching out now.. a new studio in Richmond I heard..

I recently moved to Melbourne and have just come across this thread. Wanted to give an update on the places to dance here. The following list is copied from a post in Salsa Forums. It`s a compilation of contributions from myself and some of the other members there.

Thursday night:
Azucar (Silk Road, 425 Collins Street Melbourne)
Social dancing starts at 9:30pm. They have classes before that. A very posh place right in the heart of Melbourne city.

Friday Night - two choices:

Conga Room at Copacabana (137 Smith St (Upstairs))
Social dancing from 10:00pm to 2:00am. They have a classes before that.

Sotano at Hilton Hotel in South Wharf (near the Convention Centre)

The crowds are pretty much split in half for Friday night, but you will find some that try to make it to both venues. Mainly slot / linear styles, mostly on1. Old-school and Cuban sometimes make an appearance depending on who's there.

Live bands on both venues, and the floors are good enough. Sotano at Hilton is larger and poshier but the band and DJ are better at Conga Room.

Saturday night:
Town Hall Hotel (288, Bridge St, Richmond)
Starts at 9:30pm. Was quiet the night I was there. I was told by the DJ that there was another event on that evening, otherwise the club would be more happening. Need to check it out again another time.

Sunday Night - now two places:
Night Cat (141 Johnston St Fitzroy - near the corner of Brunswick St)
Social dancing starts at 10:00pm. They have classes before that.

The Provincial Hotel (299, Brunswick St, Fitzroy)
A much smaller place than the Night Cat, but quite cosy. Starts earlier than the Night Cat (9:30pm) but ends early. I understand from some of the dancers that they typically finish about 10:30pm to 11:00pm; but that many of the dancers will move to the Night Cat after that. It is just down the road from the Night Cat.

Salsa is Great.

I do agree that practice makes a man perfect.Salsa is a different genre and now a days it is most popular.

Just want to to update this list to include monthly events and also put in some additional information :)
