"Pop" music you can ballroom dance to

I've just recently started dancing, and I was just wondering, what are some good modern songs you can dance to? For example, I've seen people dance cha-cha to "Dance with Me" by Debelah Morgan and I thought that was really cool. So does anyone have suggestions for other songs? The dances I am particularly interested in are Swing, Hustle, Waltz, Tango, Cha-cha, and Rumba.

Welcome to df natasha!! Glad to have you with us. :D There are quite a few threads on songs/ modern songs to dance to. I'll see what I can do to find these, or perhaps someone else can help out. I'm at work right now and in the middle of something, you see.

Thanks Sagitta. I've been browsing around and I did a few searches, but I didn't find anything that was very helpful for this specific topic. But if I missed something, please show me where :)

By "modern" music, I mean stuff that is less than 20 years old. Things that they play on pop radio stations.

Welcome natasha,

At the West Coast Swing dances here a tune called More Bounce in California is played which is quite good for WCS, but will also work for Cha-Cha.

Hmmm, do they have more bounce in California? I'll find out in two weeks.

Another possibility is Unconventional dance music This thread refers to music that you wouldn't necessarily hear ballroom djs playing, so there might be some good ones here.

I see most of the dance music threads in ballroom are on pages 4-7...if you want to look and make sure you haven't missed anything. :)

I rented out a new dance studio for a salsa party last month. When I arrived there at 5:00pm to prepare for the party, there were still several couples there practicing ballroom. The music they had on was REALLY good, and included lots of very cool pop songs which had been rearranged for dance(Linda Ronstadt "It's So Easy", a cool salsa tune by Marc Anthony for a cha-cha-cha, etc)! I was surprised because at the other studios I rent out they play some really corny stuff(Hey, I'm in Japan, remember) and one place plays a weird version of "La Cucaracha"!!!(Boy were they surprised whe I told them what "cucaracha meant and what the song is about!)

My favorite pop songs to Cha Cha to are,

Smooth- Santana feat Rob Thomas
Dont Stop Movin' - SClub7
Lets Get Loud - Jeniffer Lopez
Dancing In The Moonlight - Toplaoder (Not to be confused with the original Van Morrison version which is a little slower)

Rumbas would be

Youre Body is a Wonderland -John Mayer
Emotion - Destinys Child
Could I have This Kiss Forever - Enrique and whitney Housten
Angels Brought Me Here -- Guy Sebastian (Our Australian Idol winner!)

I use these for International style though..Im not sure if there is tempo difference in the American style...

There is for rhumba. Can't say what excatly it is, but there are some songs that I feel that are too slow for international but work fine for American. This is just a gut sort of feeling, but I know ballroom people on teams who agree with me.

American and International rumba are completely different in terms of music.

First off, International rumba is closer to the tempo of an American Bolero. Second, they have a different beat to them. Percussion for a song that begs and international rumba sounds a s,q,q rhythm where an American rumba is more q,q,s.
